  1. Looks like the Dodgers are about to lock up Will Smith with a 10 year extension for the soon to be 29 year old. There may be deferred money and a guarantee of $140M.
  2. Not much of a chance he evers does anything in the bigs.
  3. Yes, I fully understand the positions each of you took. I just posted his OPS from a certain point of the season to show he ended it pretty well. You countered with one less flattering, and I countered with some shorter ones that looked even better. Why the "wow?"
  4. So, the team value increase by over $500M in one year and JH can't afford $25M for Monty. Got it.
  5. ESPN has these return dates for our i nujured players: 4/9 Mata (Hamstring, out of options) Threw 15 pitche pen session on WED. 4/23 Grissom (Groin: To stay in extended ST until 4/7) Assume rehab in AAA until he's ready 5/1 Refsnyder (fractured left pinky) 8/1 Hendriks (elbow) Playing catch, now AAA: Zack Kelly (Oblique) and Mikey Romero (lower back) are both day to day 2025 Giolito (UCL), Murphy (UCL)
  6. Why wouldn't it be Heineman, who is the only other catcher on the 40?
  7. We could on and on, all day... .769 last 39 games .843 last 22 games .903 in last 12 games
  8. I could see him at .750 in his rookie 2025 season with 20-20. 2026: .800+ with 25+ HRs, or not...
  9. Story had an .805 OPS in his last 70 games of 2022 (post May 9.)
  10. No, he is no lock, that's why I said "could be..."
  11. Yes, that was my point. notin pointed out Reyes has no options, and EValdez has some. When Grissom comes back, he could be the back-up SS, but keeping Reyes makes the most sense, regardless of options.
  12. He could be a plus by 2025 and a big plus by 2026.
  13. That would be the main reason.
  14. I agree. I think they are hoping this up and coming group of prospects boosts the team to the point where 1-2 major pitching additions puts us in the top competitive class for a window or 3 or more years. I can't say that's a totally messed up plan, and it sucks to see near nothing spent, this year, but there is some logic in waiting.
  15. You could say Wheeler's numbers were buoyed by his season 3 years ago, right? (Not to the same extent, but it's true.)
  16. Pete Rose says he'd be "scott free," if he had an interpreter back in the day.
  17. It's still pretty close. The drop in spending rankings is worrisome and makes it harder for us to compete at higher levels, but it's not like JH stopped spending over the last 2-3 years. 2020 and 2024 look more like outliers than a trend, to me. Certainly, it's not evidence he will never "spend again." The jury is out on that.
  18. Lots of things that mattered for such a meaningless thing.
  19. Projected fWAR: 4.3 Devers 2.7 Casas 2.7 Story 2.4 O'Neill 2.0 Grissom 1.8 Yoshida 1.6 Rafaela 1.2 Duran 1.0 Abreu 0.9 McGuire + 0.4 Wong 0.5 Valdez +0.3 Reyes o.4 Refsnyder 2.6 Bello 2.0 Pivetta 1.9 Crawford 1.8 Whitlock 1.7 Houck In the ALE, only the Yanks have 5 SP'ers at 1.7 or higher. 0.8 Martin 0.7 Jansen 0.6 Wink 0.5 Criswell
  20. Fangraphs projects the Sox at 80-82. Seems close. 4. NYY 5. TBR 7. BAL 9. TOR 19. BOS (9th in AL)
  21. The Sox ended up 19-12 with a +21 run differential: both 3rd in the Grapefruit League.
  22. MLB.com listed their power rankings for SP'ers. It's interesting to see 3 of the top 6 were traded, recently (4 were traded since 2019): 1. Strider 2. Burnes 3. Wheeler 4. Lopez 5. Gallen (traded in 2019) 6. Castillo Remember that team that used to trade for aces every 4-5 years?
  23. True. I chalk that up to a handful of owners going bonkers more than JH cutting spending. Our 2022 spending was the 3rd most, ever. (CB Tax budget) 2023 was 4th most. 1. 2019 2. 2018 3. 2022 4. 2023 5. 2021 (pro-rated) Of course, to be fair, if you factor in inflation, maybe these rankings get jumbled.
  24. I had a strong feeling Monty would end up getting a deal we'd pine for, but this blew my mind. I've been cutting JH a lot of slack, over the past few years, but this is pushing me to the brink of total disgust. He'd have probably taken $65M/3, or at worst $70M/3. Even if he got buy-outs after each year, this was a no-brainer, assuming he'd want to pitch for us.
