Yes, I fully understand the positions each of you took. I just posted his OPS from a certain point of the season to show he ended it pretty well. You countered with one less flattering, and I countered with some shorter ones that looked even better. Why the "wow?"

Yes, that was my point. notin pointed out Reyes has no options, and EValdez has some. When Grissom comes back, he could be the back-up SS, but keeping Reyes makes the most sense, regardless of options.

I agree. I think they are hoping this up and coming group of prospects boosts the team to the point where 1-2 major pitching additions puts us in the top competitive class for a window or 3 or more years. I can't say that's a totally messed up plan, and it sucks to see near nothing spent, this year, but there is some logic in waiting.

You could say Wheeler's numbers were buoyed by his season 3 years ago, right? (Not to the same extent, but it's true.)

It's still pretty close. The drop in spending rankings is worrisome and makes it harder for us to compete at higher levels, but it's not like JH stopped spending over the last 2-3 years. 2020 and 2024 look more like outliers than a trend, to me. Certainly, it's not evidence he will never "spend again." The jury is out on that.

MLB.com listed their power rankings for SP'ers. It's interesting to see 3 of the top 6 were traded, recently (4 were traded since 2019): 1. Strider 2. Burnes 3. Wheeler 4. Lopez 5. Gallen (traded in 2019) 6. Castillo Remember that team that used to trade for aces every 4-5 years?

True. I chalk that up to a handful of owners going bonkers more than JH cutting spending. Our 2022 spending was the 3rd most, ever. (CB Tax budget) 2023 was 4th most. 1. 2019 2. 2018 3. 2022 4. 2023 5. 2021 (pro-rated) Of course, to be fair, if you factor in inflation, maybe these rankings get jumbled.

I had a strong feeling Monty would end up getting a deal we'd pine for, but this blew my mind. I've been cutting JH a lot of slack, over the past few years, but this is pushing me to the brink of total disgust. He'd have probably taken $65M/3, or at worst $70M/3. Even if he got buy-outs after each year, this was a no-brainer, assuming he'd want to pitch for us.

JH has a long history of splurging, then cutting back: rinse and repeat. He extended Devers to the biggest contract in Sox history by a long shot, not long ago. Certainly, Randy may end up being right, but no way can any of us know, and I think the evidence points to more rinsing and repeating.
