  1. I agree, but my assumption was based on an unlikely scenario, where we add 2 solid SP'ers, there are no injuries, and everyone looks sharp in ST'ing, including out of options Mata and Rule 5 guy, Slaten. We have a lot of decent arms from about #11 to #17 on the MLB depth chart. The "auto 10: (assuming healthy and in form) Acquisition #1 Acquisition #2 Bello Martin Jansen Crawford Sale Houck Pivetta Whitlock The "very probable" 2: Winckowksi (has options) Schreiber (has options) The leaves 1 slot for opening day 13: Bernardino (has options) Campbell (has options) Mata (no options) Slaten (Rule 5 restrictions) Others: Fitts, Kelly, Murphy, Weissert, Guerrero, Walter, gambrel, Criswell, Hagenman, German, Booser. I'm not complaining about having decent mid to bottom of the depth chart in MLB & AAA. I'm just wishing we could start moving towards known or expected quality vs the quantity or mediocrity or slightly better than mediocre.
  2. I would not send Schreiber, Campbell or even Bernardino to AAA for Mata or Slaten, but all 3 have options. If Mata and or Slaten look real good in ST'ing, we might swing a trade, but we might also choose to send a better pitcher to AAA until the first injury, which might be in the first week of the season. It happens all the time. Chances are, 2-3 pitchers will be on the IL, by day one, so there will be room for all. I do like this list of 16 pitchers better than ones from recent years past, assuming the 2 SP'er we add are good. No more wishing for Brasier to be DFA'd. No more DHern's. I even like the "others" list better, but to b e honest, I'm done with the quantity over quality approach. We need some studs.
  3. That really could happen. Not really like bringing George Scott back, but...
  4. Indeed. These low level guys are high in number!
  5. It depends on who we add to the MLB roster and how many. It also depends on Mata and Slaten making the 26 out of ST'ing, or not. If everyone is healthy, some good arms may be pushed to AAA, because they have options or are not under Rule 5 control. Possible 13: SP? SP? Bello Sale Pivetta Jansen Martin Winckowski Houck Crawford Whitlock Mata Slaten Pushed to AAA, assuming no injuries: Bernardino Schreiber Campbell Others: Fitts Kelly Murphy Weissert Walter Gambrell Guerrero Criswell Hagenman German AA-Later in season? 6. That's why I said "suspects." We just have those. We do have a few promising suspects, though.
  7. Only "suspects."
  8. JH may now make money on Pirates games on TV: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/pirates-penguins-agree-to-joint-ownership-of-sportsnet-pittsburgh.html The deal creates some eyebrow-raising partnerships due to the fact that daily operations of the network are handled by the New England Sports Network (NESN), which is owned by Fenway Sports Group. FSG owns the Penguins and holds an 80% stake in SportsNet Pittsburgh, per Mackey. That means that Red Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner, the founders of FSG, will directly profit from the Pirates’ television broadcasts moving forward. Williams emphasized to Mackey that MLB has not deemed that to be a conflict of interest — FSG’s operations are a separate business venture from the Red Sox — and he added that the existing relationship between Henry, Werner and Pirates owner Bob Nutting actually helped to facilitate the arrangement.
  9. I get that. BTW, I knew about Ja, before the tourney, and I took Murray St to go to the final 8. I do think his play helped his draft slot. I do think a nice bowl game can help, too, and since there are so few football games compared to b-ball. The injury factor is a huge issue, though, and I totally understand. It sucks for the fans and the university. I
  10. Sox sign a catcher- most likely a minor league deal: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/red-sox-sign-roberto-perez.html Roberto Perez hit 24 Hrs in 2019 in just 389 ABs. .655 career OPS (.555 last 4 years)
  11. Man, talk about playing second fiddle. First Correa. Now, Ohtani. Maybe they offer Yamo $350M just to win one.
  12. It's weird how no NCAA basketball players sit out March Madness.
  13. Here are the Sox largest current contracts. Which do you think are good, bad or ugly? $313M/10 Devers (to '33) $145M/5 Sale (to '24 w option for '25) $140M/6 Story (to '27 w option for '28) $90M/5 Yoshida (to '27) $32M/2 Jansen (to '24) $19M/4 Whitlock (to '26) $17.5M/2 Martin (to '24) Arb Est $8M Pivetta (last arb) $5.9 O'Neill (last arb) We have a lot coming off the books after 2024. CBT: $25.6 Sale $16.0 Jansen $8.00 Pivetta $7.50 Martin $5.85 O'Neill Total is about $53M There is no excuse to not sign a couple or 3 guys to longer term deals. Plus, after 2024, we should start seeing some real help from the farm, if things work out well. Lot's of low cost players, and the current younger group will be on early arb contracts.
  14. Agreed. I was mistaken, earlier.
  15. This certainly looks doable, if the will is there. BTW, cots has us under the first line by $56M, which included estimated arbs and player benefits. Add $19M to that, and the drop dead number might be $75M- less with more "wiggle room than $1M.) IMO, we have 3 major needs, and I hope the vast majority, if not all of these funds go to 3 free agents (or maybe a very good high-priced player some team wants to deal away.) It could look like this: $33M Yamo $27M Monty $15M for 2B or 2B+C or RF or $35M Yamo $20M Imanaga $10M 2B $10M C or RF I hope it's not $10M x 7 players.
  16. I want to believe this, so badly.
  17. There does not seem to be an easy solution.
  18. soxprospectscom has us at 39 on the 40 man, but they did not add Criswell. We certainly have players we can trade or DFA to add 3-4 free agent signings, but if we add more than 4-5, we might have some spirited debates about who should stay and go. My guess is, we will try to make a 2 or 3 for 1 trade, maybe two, but maybe not all are 40 man roster players. As it stands, we lost: Paxton, Turner, Duvall, Joely, Kluber and Mondesi to free agency. We traded Dugo and Urias away. We lost some players to Rule 5, most notably Drohan & R Fernandez We added: OF Tyler O'Neill (FA) P- Isaiah Campbell (Urias trade) P- Slaten (Trade for Rule 5 player) P- Cooper Criswell (FA) P- Richard Fitts (Dugo trade) P- Greg Wiessert (Dugo trade) P- Nicholas Judice (Dugo trade) My ordered DFA/trade list: Weiss Llovera Jacques DHam (assuming we add a MI) Dalbec Mata (out of options) Kelly Criswell Slaten (Rule 5) Weissert Refsnyder (assuming we add an OF'er or Rafaela and Abreu shine)
  19. Indeed. Then, they spent bigly in '23, too, and although they won it all, they sure swung and missed on deGrom. Heaney was meh. Nate did great, despite the injury.
  20. I hope we don't have to rely on two trades to get 2 decent SP'ers. (I'd prefer none.) If we miss out on Yamo, and Monty, too, it won't be pretty, here.
  21. I'm all for going $19.9M over the tax line in '24.... more if they have the balls.
  22. You've been hanging out on The Big Corner, too much.
  23. I know it could/would never happen, yet people seem to think it's as simple as saying JH should just open his pocket and fork over his own cash. I wonder how much, if any input Werner has in how much is spent on the player budget.
  24. No doubt, and some teams have to win or give the impression they can win to keep viewership and ticket sales from falling and affecting the bottom line. Do you think, if the Pirates spent $100M more, this winter, they'd recoup that in increased revenue, assuming the spending worked and they made the playoffs in '24? I'm sure it is different for every city and fanbase.
