  1. Now here are the win totals with the 10 best ERA's in MLB-- Rangers 66 Padres 74 Brewers 81 Royals 67 Sox 71 Giants 63 Phillies 76 Cubs 76 Reds 68 Tigers 78
  2. Scoring is a big deal this season. Here are the top 10 teams in runs scored along with their wins-- Dodgers 74 wins Brewers 81 Yankees 70 Red Sox 71 Cubs 76 Diamondbacks 64 Tigers 78 Jays 76 Mariners 70 That's 9 out of 10 are wild cards or better. The biggest outlier are the Padres with 74 wins and ranked 22d in runs scored.
  3. The one caveat to the above is that Duran's OPS vs lefties is .57`1.
  4. I think the Sox go with who they have now, especially with Abreu and Ref due back this week. Here are Sox OPS's with RISP (and I was wrong about Duran)-- Anthony 1.039 Abreu .944 Bregman .886 Gonzalez .869 Story .828 Duran .826 Lowe .778 Hamilton .776 Narvaez .738 Rafaela .659 Refsnyder .596 Yoshida .367 Wong .227 Team .754. Sox OPS for all splits is .750.
  5. I dislike your headline--Roman Empire--because it smacks of the super-hype regularly indulged in by ESPN and most other outlets. And to set the record straight, I think the 6 most valuable players on this team right now are Bregman, Anthony, Story, Crochet, Chapman, and Bello. Does anyone in his right mind believe the Sox take 3 of 4 from the Yankees and their terrfic batting order without superb pitching? And, by the way, Wong and Lowe's back to back doubles won the 2d game. I really like moonslav's comment that Anthony has essentially replaced Devers because it fits perfectly. Plus Anthony can play the outfield with a plus DWAR.
  6. The lesson from this series is that for the Sox pitching is almost everything because the Sox are lousy with RISP. The Sox have a lot better pitching and hitting than the Orioles but collapsed against them Mon and Tues. Now the Sox are at their ballpark for 4. This series, no less than the Yankees series, is important.
  7. Agree on all although I think batters should have to challenge calls to get them.
  8. So true. NYC is known world wide. My sister lives in Buffalo, one of her daughters in Buffalo, another in Canada, a son in the Finger Lakes, and the youngest in NYC (for 30 years). My favorite city is probably Paris over Rome, Berlin, London, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Brussels, Istanbul, Athens, Amman, Tel-Aviv, Riyadh, Dubai, Tokyo, Seoul, Riyadh, et al. And my second favorite city is NYC.
  9. Series over. Sox still ahead of everyone in the WP race. On to Baltimore who were downright pesky last Mon-Tues--and at Fenway yet. Tomorrow's Sox starter is TBD and will be followed by Giolito, Bello, and Crochet in Boston. Sox `1/6 with RISP tonight. Duran was a one man wrecking crew. Unfortunately he wrecked the good guys.
  10. I don't hate them for the simple reason that the Yankees and Red Sox are one of the best rivalries in major American sports despite the Yankees having the bigger fan base, attendance, tv audience, and $$$$. If they stink all the time, no point in the rivalry. Historically they've had the upper hand (27 WS), but in the JH era the Sox have been a lot better. This year the 2 teams are just about even steven and that makes winning 3 of 4 at Yankee Stadium in late August all the more enjoyable. Well maybe not when Duran K's yet again. Boy, do we need Abreu back in RF, Rafaela in CF, and Anthony in LF. Duran needs some R&R. About a week or 2 should do.
  11. Sox 3 best hitters go down in a row, 2 with K's. Hard to see a rally in the 9th.
  12. Sure was. And Buehler just might have found a niche. That was a sweet pitch for strike 3 and out of the inning against the top of the Yankees order. I would be tempted to send him back out for the 8th.
  13. I'm so glad Gonzalez is leading off. He just struck out on 3 pitches, and with luck--a rally in 7th or 8th inning, we could see him do that again. He is in a decaying orbit.
  14. Duran stinks when it counts, If he's still around next year, Breslow is making a mistake. With the bases loaded he looked at 3 called strikes, all of them in the strike zone.
  15. Now Story gets a BB on the 9th pitch. Bases loaded, Rodin. That said, I think this game is still very much a longshot, especially with Eaton at bat and 2 outs.
  16. When Rodon is throwing low pitches, our batters are in trouble.
  17. That's the thing about Anthony. When it's a pitch to hit, he usually makes good contact. Tough break for Story. That was also well hit.
  18. Two outstanding at bats by Gonzalez and Bregman. Rodon ain't seeing the 7th.
  19. Nobody else got him either. Maybe the Twin were asking for too much,
  20. Meh. I'm not sure I want a CBO whom other CBO's love in July, which is a very tough month for making good deals. Plus this is just his second year as CBO, so of course he's going to be cautious. On the other hand, Breslow brought in Crochet, Bregman, Chapman, and Narvaez last winter. That's the best four in one winter I ever heard of for the Sox.
