I'm not sure your caveat, "not the broken down guys," is reasonable. Thus $22M on Story, $18M on Giolito, and $17M on Sale--all of them on the Sox payroll and none of them playing for the Sox--is not that unusual. My view is much simpler. Players with big salaries are always a gamble because those big bucks are always guaranteed, sometimes for 10 or more seasons. As I've said too many times, the Sox had the biggest payroll in MLB in 2019, and it wasn't going to be nearly enough to keep Mookie from going to the Dodgers and to replace Price and Sale while also paying their salaries. -
Cora's big mistake was bringing Bello out to pitch the 7th. He gave up runs in the 5th and 6th, showing he was losing it.

He did hit it solid, but you have a point. Plus he hit it to RF which is much deeper than LF.

Nice grab by Devers, but a fantastic throw on the money and in time.

Agree completely. Plus he hit that one to the wrong field. He did start the double play, though. And he does have 2 of the 4 rbi's.

Huge dinger from Devers. Huge. But game still very much in doubt. Sox have had a bunch of hard hit balls caught.

Ref pinch-hitting for Hamilton, who has one of the Sox measly 5 hits. So Detroit brings in a righty reliever.

Bello 6.1 innings, 8 hits, 3 BB's, 5K's, 4 ER's. ERA now 4.36.

Sox scoreless in the last 3 innings after scoring in 1st, 2d, and 3d. Tigers have 9 hits to the Sox 5.

3-3. I do think Cora erred in bringing Bello out for the 7th inning.

Unless you're dumb, you should try to hit the ball toward/near Hamilton--at least, when he is at SS.

This homeplate ump likes to call strikes, which I'm in favor of. I hate batters who are up there looking for BB's.

McGuire has stopped hitting. 1 for 12 in last 11 days.

In the 2d, 3d, and 4th innings, he was throwing good stuff and getting strikes.

Great catch by Smith for the 3d out!!! Hamilton stinks on defense. No excuse for every throw to be in the dirt.

Could be he's tired, but I think Bello is missing the strike zone because he's afraid to throw strikes.

Sox go down in order in the bottom of the 5th against a lefty reliever. Here we go again. Clean leadoff single in top of 6th. 3d time through the Tigers batting order.

Hamilton with plenty of time, still makes a bad throw to 1b--caught for the out. Then Valdez mishandles a grounder, now called a single. Sox defense is doing all they can to keep this Detroit rally going.
