  1. Two players that won't be traded - Papi and Pedroia. Those are also two players that one should never bet against.
  2. Victorino is a great player to model yourself after. I didn't get to see his farewill speech, from what I've read, it was emotional and straight from the heart.
  3. Anchor the BP with good 8th and 9th inning guys, then collect as many other BP arms as is practical, and hope someone sticks. Relievers are so unpredictable that spending a lot of money on the BP isn't the best strategy. As it is, I think Koji's contract was too large, not that I'm complaining. The best relievers often come out of nowhere.
  4. As much as I love Victorino, he was really serving no purpose being on the team the remainder of the season. Why not get something for him in return? Rutledge may not amount to anything, but everyone said the same thing about De Aza. De Aza is not a game changer, nor is Rutledge, but he may be able to help the team in some small way going forward.
  5. One aspect of building a strong farm system that is often overlooked is the trade aspect. You don't build the farm thinking that every prospect will play for your team, or that your team will consist of nothing but farm players. You draft the best players available, then you trade from your areas of strength. If someone is "blocked", trade him to get pitching.
  6. ^^ This Nice post Pal.
  7. I love watching Victorino play. It's too bad that he couldn't stay healthy for us, but I have no regrets about his signing. I thank him for 2013 and wish him the best of luck in LA.
  8. Well, I think that's kind of the point. You can win with a mediocre rotation, if you are strong enough in other areas to overcome that. We ended up stinking in all areas, but the offense and defense were supposed to be good enough to carry the mediocre staff.
  9. Optimism still abounds in some of us. Okay, maybe only one of us. Remember that Castillo is not projected to be a Puig or an Abreu. I can't remember who was mentioned as his comps. Victorino? If he comes close to that, he'll be worth his contract, this year aside.
  10. The losses are always disheartening.
  11. This move was kind of puzzling. If the team were in the middle of a pennant race, then sure, pinch hit for Castillo. But at this point, Castillo needs to play everyday and stay in the games so that he can get the ML experience and hopefully develop to the point where he can be an everyday OF for us next year. I understand the reasoning of still trying to win every game despite our chances, but keeping Castillo in there in that situation in no way jeopardizes the integrity of the game.
  12. There was nothing wrong with Ben's BP strategy. I could defend it, but I won't bother. All I will say is hindsight is 20/20.
  13. I can't stand Lucchino either. As one of my fellow posters always says, Lucchino should not be allowed anywhere near a microphone.
  14. With Hanley, I almost think it's more mental than anything else. He looks so lackadaisical out there sometimes, which gives off the impression that he doesn't care or that he doesn't try hard, but I really sometimes think that he's just a flake. He would probably have the physical ability to play first. I'm not sure that he would have the mental ability. Either way, that idea scares me.
  15. I wholeheartedly agree. It should be on the players to be able to exhibit some self-control and discipline. Pablo apparently does not have such self-control. Hence, the reason why he is big to begin with. Are the conditioning coaches working with him, or just letting him do what he pleases?
  16. IMO, Theo did not create the mess. It was "forced" upon him by Lucchino.
  17. Therein lies the problem between the business side of things (Lucchino) and the baseball ops side of things (Theo/Ben). Lucchino is concerned with one thing - money. He wants players that will fill the seats and sell merchandise. That goes against what the intent of the GM is. None of us knows for sure who is pulling the strings on which moves, but IMO, Lucchino needs to keep his nose out of baseball ops and let the baseball ops people make the decisions on building the team.
  18. You do have to question what is going on with the conditioning coaches. I know that the FO's plan was to let Panda be fat, and not require any kind of strict diet from him. However, there should be some degree of moderation to that. From what I've heard (speculation), there have been problems in the past with lack of conditioning. Beckett comes to mind. I understand not wanting to force these guys to eat a diet of tofu and bean sprouts (not the worst thing in the world, BTW), but if Panda has indeed gained as much weight as what people are saying, then something needs to be done with the diet and conditioning program.
  19. This is a reasonable suggestion, outside of moving Panda which I don't think will happen, but trying Swihart at first base is something worth invesigating. If he works out there, it's a very inexpensive option, leaving more money for other areas of need, namely pitching. I really like that Vazquez/Hanigan catching tandem, and Swihart could always catch in a pinch. I know you disagree, but I think Panda will show improvement defensively next year. And with a year of experience under his belt and some more work at it, Hanley could even show some improvement in LF, at least to the point where he's not a liability.
  20. Bogaerts has shown significant improvement and has done an admirable job at SS. He showed the willingness to work hard last offseason and it paid off. He should not be moved off of that position. He didn't do well last year when he was moved to 3rd. Don't mess with a good thing. I really don't think Sandoval is going to continue being as bad defensively as he was this year. I understand that as he ages and with his weight, his range is not likely going to improve, but he is having a horrendous season defensively, which is uncharacteristic for him.
  21. I read an article yesterday on how similar Theo's and Ben's philosophy have been over the past several years. The difference is that Theo was able to ask the Cubs fans for patience while he gutted that team and rebuilt it from the bottom up. Ben does not have that luxury. He has to find ways to try to stay competitive while waiting for the young core to develop. It worked in 2013 and it has failed miserably in the other years, but I do think that there is a good core up the middle that should keep us competitive for the long haul, with the right additions.
  22. I am not and have never been a fan of huge contracts. However, whenever the Sox sign a player to a big contract, I am thrilled to have that player on the team. For instance, if the Sox were to sign Cueto or Price this off season, I would be thrilled, even though I'm sure I would not be a fan of the contract. You just have to realize that said contract is likely to handcuff the team financially a few years down the road. From my experience, it seems to me that the people who criticize the FO the most for not signing these types of guys are the same people who will criticize the FO for signing such a "stupid" contract when the contract goes bad. You can't have it both ways. (I don't mean you, personally.)
  23. Spitball, you really need to post more often. You are such a refreshing voice of reason.
  24. The people who projected more or less everything about our team were dead wrong. Practically the whole team and every move made have been failures. We get that. Now the task is to fix it. We're at the point where I would call up at least one of JBJ or Castillo, if not both, and let them play the season out as our every day outfielders. JBJ, Castillo, and Hanley should all work out at that players institute that Pedroia attends every offseason. It seems to have done wonders for Xander this year.
  25. Good win for the team on Pedro's day.
