  1. No, he's not. He is another one who should never step foot in front of a microphone because he's not intelligent enough to do so, but otherwise he's all right in my book.
  2. It looks like both he and Johnson will be getting their shots soon.
  3. I also agree that JBJ should be playing everyday and given a real chance to see what he can do at the big league level. We already know he can hit AAA pitching. We need to see what he can contribute to the team for next year.
  4. No, he is not worth more than Abreu or Puig. Post steroid era, Ben realizes that there is a premium on offense. That is the path that he chose to go down, especially after the horrible offense that we had last season. There were several other teams interested in Castillo. I am guessing that the FO did not want to risk losing out on him after having lost out on Abreu. They offered a contract that insured that would not happen.
  5. I am wondering how binding that condition of being a closer is, and for how long. Like you said, if Papelbon blows a couple of saves, then what? I'm a huge Papelbon fan. I would have taken him back on the Sox in a heartbeat, just not at the price the Phillies gave him.
  6. I agree that as a professional, he should be able to maintain his level of effectiveness. You do what's best for the team. I also understand that being a human, that's not always as easy as it sounds. It's similar to Bogaerts being moved to 3B last season. Did he feel like he was "demoted"? Did it affect his play? Who knows?
  7. It's not like the Sox just found Castillo out of nowhere and signed him blindly. They have scouted him repeatedly and watched plenty of video on him. It's also not like the Sox were the only team interested in him. From what I've read, there were several teams that wanted him. With all that, there has to something there that made them all believe that he would be a good major league player. Perhaps it is a transition period and adjusting to the culture shock of a new country. Perhaps he will never pan out. Either way, I'm not ready to give up on him or to call him a bomb after less than a year into his contract.
  8. Very surprising. As others have said, this play kind of puts an exclamation point on the kind of season it's been. To top it all off, Mookie gets injured on the play.
  9. The good news is that a badly as the plan has failed this year, Ben did not sacrifice the future of the team. He stuck to his guns in terms of not giving up his prized prospects, and we still have those players for years to come. The team is also in decent shape financially. I know most people hate the Hanley, Pablo, and Porcello contracts. However, none of those contracts are outrageous. Pablo's was the only one out of the three that I didn't like, but even his is salvageable. None of those contracts have put a strap on the team where they can't go out and get the pitching that they need. If those players continue to perform like they did this year, then yes, they will become a burden. But like you said, players can have bad years and then turn it around the following year. I expect better performances from all three going forward.
  10. MLB has not yet realized that the ground cannot cause a fumble. Did you see the look on Abreu's face when it was called a HR? Even he was surprised by it. My understanding is that even Hawk, the ultimate homer, thought it should have been a double.
  11. I think we're all in the same boat, missing out on the treat of being able to see some of the greats. I am fortunate enough to have watched Pedro and Clemens (maybe unfortunate in his case). For my money, Pedro in his prime was the best. Period.
  12. Go figure. It's not just Nap though. I don't know how many times we start an inning off with potential for a big inning, only to have it squashed by a double play. It seems like it happens every time.
  13. The rule itself is terrible and needs to be changed, but according to the rule, the review team did get the non-catch part of it correct. Makes no sense, since Mookie clearly caught that ball. What I don't get at all is how they could rule the hit a HR. Mookie caught the ball in the field of play, took a couple of steps as you noted, then went over the wall. The hit should have been called a ground rule double.
  14. It's a shame that the team had to put a damper on such a great moment. I love this team, but sometimes I think these guys don't deserve to wear the same uniform as Pedro.
  15. LOL Tonight's goal - to still be in the game after the 1st inning.
  16. They are showcasing De Aza. He has had some trade interest. After this week, I am guessing Castillo will have the vast majority of playing time. Well, now with Mookie injured, Castillo will probably play this week too.
  17. Wait.... We agree on something? Mark this day in our calendars.
  18. I've been reading about the effect that his signing might have on the clubhouse, more specifically on the BP, more specifically on Storen. Storen has done a solid job in the closer's role, and now he's being pushed out of that role for Papelbon. I'm sure he gets it that adding Paps lengthens the BP, but I'm also pretty sure that he's not thrilled with undeservedly losing his job . It will be interesting to see how he responds on the mound to this change.
  19. Sure, they can do whatever they want. They're the owners. But like you said, they won't, and they shouldn't.
  20. I don't think it was a move to cut payroll. It was a move to open a roster spot for Castillo and get something, however little, back in return. Cherington stated today that he has had interest in Rutledge since his days with the Rockies. Maybe he can be a viable bench player. If not, no harm done.
  21. Not to mention that he is on the brink of hitting 500 HRs. The Sox can't have him reaching 500 with another team.
  22. If for no other reason, the Sox need to win the remaining 3 games in this series to keep Hawk Harrelson from being so annoying. Thorne is extremely annoying, made more so by the fact that I have to listen to him 19 times a season, but no one tops Hawk when it comes to the annoyance factor. He's so annoying that even though I had the NESN feed last night and didn't have to listen to him, I was annoyed by just thinking about him being annoying. Let's go Sox!!!
  23. Ortiz has said that he is not waiving his rights, that he is retiring with the Red Sox, so moot point. Regardless, whether it's right or not, they would not trade either him or Pedroia because of the PR nightmare it would create. I'm guessing those two are also the biggest money makers in terms of merchandise. All that aside, they are both still very good players. I don't understand wanting to have them off the team.
  24. Oh I'm sure I would bawl my eyes out. I read that he was very teary, and that it was sincere - nothing at all staged about it. I'm going to have to find it and watch it now. I can't stand Scioscia either, but like you, I would be happy for Victorino if he won another ring. I'm happy for him that he gets the chance.
  25. That's why I said "hindsight". They all failed, and hence, it's easy to say the Ben did not plan for the BP. There were enough pieces that you hope and think someone will be a solid contributor. I remember all the talk about Barnes being someone who had the potential to be so good in the BP that many of us hoped that he would be kept stretched out as a starter instead. Teams do not go out and sign expensive or big name middle relievers. Those guys, and some of your best closers, typically come out of nowhere.
