  1. On a 3-0 count, doesn't the manager usually make the call on whether batter has the green light or not? JBJ may be a hard guy to coach, but I think in this instance, Farrell gave him the green light.
  2. Well, you can look at that a couple of ways. You can think that since he's not hitting, he should take 2 strikes before he even thinks about swinging at a pitch, or you can think that since he's not hitting, give him the green light because the pitcher is likely to grooove a fast ball and maybe he can get a hit give himself a confidence boost. I can understand both takes, but since we are playing more for next year, I see nothing wrong with the latter.
  3. When you think about it, it's really an enigma.
  4. The best part for the Cubbies is that they look set for the long haul. Whoever wanted Theo gone should slap themselves in the face a couple of times.
  5. He pitched a very good game. You have to give credit where credit is due. Tough luck loss for him, though I'm not complaining.
  6. I love Holt and hope he soon breaks out of this slump, but while he is in the midst of his 2nd half fade, he should not be batting in the top of the order.
  7. Shaw is worth a look, but he has had how many ABs in the bigs? He's done well, but far too soon to anoint him our starting 1B for next year.
  8. Who said they're letting Hanley decide where he wants to play? Just because he said that he wants to stay in LF doesn't mean that 1. he'll stay there and 2. it was his decsion to stay there if he does.
  9. I would not spend big on a 1B. Find a less expensive option for 1B and focus on pitching.
  10. I don't think anyone really expected the original starting 5 to get through the season as a unit. Even when you have a good rotation, the chances of them all getting through the season as a unit are slim.
  11. When deciding whether to lock someone up before FA, the front office has to consider hypotheticals. They don't have the luxury of hindsight. As far as the Sox not signing Porcello if he pitched well, I didn't say that that was the only conclusion. However, his contract would have been larger than what he got from the Sox, and with other teams bidding, that decreases the chances of the Sox re-signing him.
  12. There were some predictions that Porcello would get six years had he become a FA. Most believed he would get at least five. Being able to shorten the deal to 4 years at a slightly higher AAV was another plus, at the time of the signing.
  13. I have no idea, but I wouldn't be surprised.
  14. I do remember you saying that. That is all well and good, but the chances of making it to the playoffs with that many rookies is very small. It's hard enough to have 2 rookies in the rotation, much less four. I know our rotation stunk worse than they probably would have, but starting off the season with the above rotation is likely a recipe for disaster. Going in, the rotation we had was less of a risk.
  15. Larry is a good businessman. He is good at a lot of things. My problem with him has always been that his top priority is making a profit, which is fine, but that kind of thinking does not belong in baseball ops. I think he too often exerted his influence in baseball ops decisions for the wrong reasons. I read this morning that Kennedy says he plans to more or less stay out of the baseball ops side of things and let the baseball ops team take care of that. We shall see.
  16. Well he still has a job, so somebody must. I wonder what White Sox fans think of him. Do they like him or do they think he's as annoying as the rest of the world thinks he is?
  17. There is plenty of good reason to believe that he could be a top of the rotation pitcher. He pitched like a #2 last year. It was a calculated risk which, unfortunately, looks really bad right now. But it was a good calculated risk to take. Going back to something Bellhorn said, if Porcello had pitched well and we lost him in free agency, we would never hear the end of how we should have locked him up during ST. Just like we are with Lester. Beckett is another example. People want to criticize the FO for re-signing him before free agency, then want to turn right around and critcize the FO for not re-signing Lester. You can't have it both ways. IMO, locking up a player that you want back before he hits FA is always a good idea.
  18. It's been confirmed that Owens will get the start on Tuesday. Our starters in that series will be Owens, Rodriguez, and Wright. Who would have imagined?
  19. Papi is finally going the other way, rather than trying to pull everything. He should know this by now...
  20. Hmm, wonder if there was any intent to that HBP.
  21. It's a fair point that Lucchino is the one that hired Theo. That being the case, it's kind of interesting that the two reportedly butted heads so often about philosophies. Camden Yards is a great ballpark.
  22. Porcello has been placed on the DL. It's possible that Owens will be getting the start on Tuesday.
  23. It will be interesting to see what, if any, big changes will be coming. From what I've read, it does not seem like Ben is going anywhere. It seems like he is going to be given the chance to clean up this mess, but he will be on notice. I may come to regret it, but I am personally glad to see that Lucchino is stepping down, though it is my understanding that he will still have some role with the franchise.
  24. Unbelievable doesn't even begin to describe it. Everytime I listen to him, it truly surprises me that he is allowed to call games.
