  1. Re-signing Drew was not only a good move but it was a necessary one.
  2. I read that Farrell said something to the effect that all the Sox/Padres trade talk were Twitter rumors. This is why I hate the trade deadline. I hear all of these rumors and speculation. I get all worked up, either good or bad. Then nothing. I can't imagine what this time must be like for the players.
  3. LOL Obviously that didn't happen, but it depends on what the return would have been. If the Sox got something in return that made sense, that's one thing. However, trading him and selling low on him just for the sake of getting rid of him after only 4 months of a 5 year contract would be stupid, IMO. I really hate having to pay a player to play for another team.
  4. To avoid repeating everything again, and to save myself the time and energy, I'll just say that I agree with everything that SK posted.
  5. The Sox were not influenced by his playoff numbers. Stat geeks know better. If anything, they were seduced by his marketability, which would mean that Lucchino stuck his nose where it didn't belong, once again.
  6. The rotation was not supposed to be great. They were supposed to be mediocre, but that mediocrity was suppsed to be offset by a great offense and a very good defense. We were let down in ALL areas. I personally was surprised that the Sox did not add a top starting pitcher. After spending all that money on other contracts and already being over the tax limit, I really though they would go that extra step and add that pitcher. However, I can understand their reasoning behind not doing so. I don't think the team is several years away from being a contender. If the right pitching moves are made this offseason, the Sox can contend next year.
  7. I realize that. I know that he is not and has never been a good defender. But as bad as he was defensively last year, he was a 3.3 WAR player overall. The idea that you can move a poor defender to a much easier position and think that he should at least maintain his previous level of defensive ability is not a crazy one.
  8. The thing about this is, this ownership is not going to go into full rebuilding mode. I'm not sure exactly which pieces you are talking about, but I can't foresee them trading someone like Pablo or Hanley just for the sake of getting rid of them, taking a big hit in the process. If it's a good trade that makes sense for next year and beyond, then sure. Otherwise, they are just creating more needs that don't need to be created.
  9. I will be glad when the deadline passes. I always hate this time of year, with all of the rumors and speculation. Even though the Sox are not that active, it's nerve wracking. I do hope that the Sox are able to trade Napoli, not that I have anything against him.
  10. LOL You have a much more descriptive way of saying things.
  11. I am not glad about the rain delay.
  12. I don't disagree with that. I did not like his contract. I thought there were better options. My preference was Headley. That said, we desperately needed an upgrade at 3B and Sandoval should have been a good upgrade. We can speculate all we want about why the FO didn't get Headley or Donaldson or anyone else instead, but we don't know if they were realistic options for the Sox.
  13. Thank you CP. Even though we often disagree, the feeling is mutual. I liked the Hanley signing. Of course, I didn't expect him to be so awful in LF. I knew he was not going to be good defensively, but you would really think that someone who has the ability to play SS could play LF at least at the same level. As far as Sandoval goes, I agree with everyone that his weight seems to be becoming a problem. We all joked about it when he first signed, but it has never affected him this adversely before. The coaches need to insist that he condition better. Also, I was reading today that Farrell would like to see Sandoval not play so far in defensively, but that he has not forced the issue because of Panda's comfort level with playing in. It seems to me that he could get to a lot more of those balls if he were playing back further. I don't know if disrupting his "comfort level" would do more harm though.
  14. It's easy to criticize the FO for not handing out the big contracts for the likes of Scherzer, etc. However, I know from experience that when such a contract turns bad, and it almost assuredly will, that the FO would receive just as much criticism for signing such a "stupid" contract. You can't have it both ways. If you want the big name free agent pitcher, that's all well and fine. You just have to be ready to suffer the consequences later. And those consequences can be rather grave, meaning several years of a terrible team with no way to fix it.
  15. There is always a plan CP. Always. It might not make sense to us and we might not know exactly what it is, but there's a plan. In the broadest terms, the plan is and has been to build a team around a strong core of young players AND to keep the team competitive while those young players develop. It worked in 2013. Not so much in the other years.
  16. I wholeheartedly agree that not keeping Lester was a big time screw up. I don't think that the Sox should have matched the Cubs offer, but it really should have never reached that point. The Sox could have had him signed for a 5 year deal in the neighborhood of $110 million if they did so in the spring. Messing around with Lester was a terrible strategy.
  17. +1 Nothing more needed to be said, but since a post has to have at least 3 characters, well, there you go.
  18. Pablo has been worth $17.1, $14.3, and $23 million in his last 3 years. As I have said many times, I was not a fan of his contract. He is overpaid. But even factoring in a normal rate of decline, the contract is not outrageous. An overpay? Yes. Outrageous? No. Hanley has been worth $16.5, $37.5, and $25.1 million in his last 3 years. Even factoring in his poor defense, questions concerning his "baggage", and normal decline, his contract was a good one. When you consider that hitting is at a premium and the Sox desperately needed to upgrade its offense over last season, signing these guys had merit. Once again, sound strategy that didn't work.
  19. Because it didn't work. That doesn't mean it wasn't a sound strategy.
  20. Had that been Papi or Hanigan that got thrown out at the plate, would you still be blaming the players?
  21. Hindsight is 20/20. There was no reason not to expect Porcello to be a solid pitcher for us. If he had pitched well and the Sox lost out on him like they did with Lester, we would never hear the end of it. The FO took a good calculated risk and lost. So far.
  22. Because the strategy was not flawed, nor was the execution. It didn't work. There is no way to sugar coat that. When a strategy doesn't work, you fix it and try something different.
  23. That was flat out embarrassing for the team. Something like this is just inexcusablel.
  24. Not true at all. The metrics and non-statistical arguments have been stated here before. They are legitimate arguments. They didn't work. That doesn't mean that there was little probability for them to be successful. Yes, there were risks, as there always were, but there was also a good probability that the staff would do okay. I'm not talking great, but at least good enough to be able to keep the team in most games.
  25. For as much criticism as he gets, Amaro did well in this deal. Not take the Rangers to the cleaners well, but he got some good prospects to help with the rebuilding process.
