  1. IMO, it doesn't matter how great a player is, a player is never bigger than the team or the game. Every player should play the game the right way, which includes always hustling. Papi is also a leader on this team. He should be leading by example. He is one of my favorite players who gets a lifetime pass from me for what he's meant to the team, but I really dislike it that he does not run out his grounders.
  2. Well, he is a big deal. What he is able to do, switching positions so seamlessly, is no small feat. That said, he does seem to have a tendency to fade the 2nd half. His first half BABIP made it rather evident that he would not sustain his batting numbers through the rest of the year.
  3. Nice pick off Miley!
  4. I love Holt, but until he breaks out of his funk, if that's what it is, he needs to be moved down in the order. He has no business leading off right now.
  5. It makes sense if you think of it in terms of trying to stay competitive while also building for the future. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.
  6. The team does have a direction and a plan. It failed miserably this year and last, but the direction is there. It is to develop a farm system and a core of young players, while staying competitive each year in the meantime. It's not a full rebuilding mode, nor is it a win now at any costs mode, but it doesn't have to be an either or situation. It is possible to "rebuild" while staying competitive at the same time. The Sox did it in 2013.
  7. I do not believe that any of them are intentionally dogging it. I believe that Hanley could put in more work on his defense, but I don't think it's a conscious effort on his part to say that he's not going to practice. From what I've read, he has willingly put in extra practice whenver one of the coaches has asked him to. I think he's too much of a flake to initiate it on his own. With Pablo, I think he truly believed that his weight was not an issue, and before this year, it really hasn't been. Frankly, I'm not sure that it's the reason why he's been playing so poorly. If it is, then he needs to be put on a conditioning program. Regardless, he is giving his full effort on the field. I don't see anyone else not giving their best effort, except for Ortiz in not running out grounders, but that is not anything new.
  8. IMO, the only failure up front was not signing Lester. The other moves you mention are only failures (to date) in hindsight.
  9. Our unexpected ace goes up against Alfredo "Mr. Groin" Simon. They have identical ERAs of 4.55, as Thunder pointed out yesterday. Simon has the weight advantage over Miley, 265 to 220, which means that we will this game. Go Sox!!!
  10. Ha! If only.....
  11. In a perfect world, Craig would figure out how to hit well enough again to be our first baseman for then next few years.
  12. Cherington stated last night that there is no plan right now to move either Hanley or Pablo to first base. The plan is to give Shaw and eventually Craig playing time there.
  13. I agree with Elk and Dojii on this one. I do not want to see Hanley at first base, for the reasons they've already stated. If the team really wants to get Hanley out of LF, I would put Hanley at 3rd and move Pablo to first before I'd put Hanley at first. This is an option I would go with if JBJ can hit well enough to stick in the bigs. I really like the idea of having an OF of JBJ, Betts, and Castillo for many years. Outside of that, leave Hanley in LF and hope that the experience from this year will make him a little better next year. That would be the lesser of two evils.
  14. I still think the blame falls mostly on the players themselves. I think the talent is much better than what we saw this year. Why there has been such underperformance is beyond me. This is why I have to question the coaching staff, but no, they do not deserve all of the blame or even most of it.
  15. The FO should more or less leave the offense as is, with the exception of finding a first baseman. Add two starting pitchers and a few middle BP arms. Shouldn't be too difficult to get this team back into contention next season. Is there a reason why the Hot Stove thread is in the Game Thread section?
  16. LOL The Rangers still owe us for that one, so I think they should overpay for Naps.
  17. Times two!
  18. Based on the fact that he has never been even close to this bad defensively at 3B before. Hopefully, having played so poorly this season, he'll have the motivation to lose weight and come to camp in better condition next season.
  19. Interesting. If true, I wonder what we'll get in return.
  20. Yes it does make you question Farrell and the rest of the coaching staff. With the extent of the underperformances this season, you have to wonder.
  21. Youk, delete this thread please.
  22. Cy Young versus Norris. On paper, we have no chance, which means we'll win this. Go Sox!!!
  23. LOL No they don't. Would it be too corny of me to say that I don't need drugs to get me high, I'm high on life?
