OK, not that it's a big deal, but why is it that anytime I respond with just "LOL", and I know I capitalize it, when it shows up in the thread, it is not capitalized? Oh, the things that keep me awake at night....

Sure it does. That doesn't apply to everyone, but you know darn well that there are a good number of people who stop watching and following the Sox when they are not winning. Several posters here have even stated that they aren't watching the games anymore.

I feel it is my civic duty to beat some of these topics to death in order to educate the masses. As a teacher, I just cannot let some of the nonsense posted here go unchallenged. You're welcome.

I'm not saying that the lesser name players are necessarily providing more production. IMO, though, it's often the smaller name guys and the depth guys who are the difference makers on the team, not the superstars. Tanaka and McCann, along with Ellsbury and Beltran, were all on the team last year, and the team went nowhere.

That's all I'm saying. I questioned it myself. IMO, there were better options. Despite that, it was not a disastrous, or as others would say, an insane signing.

I honestly don't follow the team's revenue, so I have no clue. But apparently, it has hit the NESN revenue stream.

He has looked good with the Jays in some big games. That said, you never know how a player is going to respond to the Boston pressure cooker, especially if he is handed a big contract. Honestly, if I were GM, I would not shell out the type of contract that it will likely take to sign him. As a fan, I'd be thrilled if the Sox acquired him.

To date it's been a bad acquistion. At the time of the signing, it was not, no matter how many times you say otherwise.

So far, Miley looks good. He's on a mission. Our offense needs to help him out.

As I said, I thought there were better options. But his "meh" defense and his OPS against lefties doesn't erase the fact that he was still a 3 WAR player last season. Yes, you have to consider aging and natural decline from season to season, but even with that, it was not an insane contract. Too long, but not insane.

The lifers are not the ones the FO has to worry about. For the most part, they will be here no matter what. It's the more casual fans that would bail. Again, you can judge by what happens on Red Sox forums, and not just this one, when the team is going bad. There are many fans who only watch when the team is winning.

Panda was a 3 WAR player last season, not including the postseason. Yes, the contract is too large, and I preferred Headley, but signing him was hardly insane.

I am not saying that the team is good to go as is. We need pitching. That being said, the team has a good core of young players that they can build around, and we should be able to contend next year with the right moves. There are also several more players that are 2-3 years away. This is how you build a good franchise. Ben has done a good job with the farm system, and he managed to win a WS along the way. Not bad, IMO.

It is a concern and a reason why building depth is so important. Dombrowski has to acquire, at minimum, a top of the rotation guy. I have no doubt that he will do that.

I was referring to the post that Jacko made. I realize that the Yankees made several big name acquisitions two offseasons ago. Many of their players have bounced back this season. Personally, I am more impressed with the lesser name players.

In his short term goals, I can understand the opinion that he messed up in 2014 and 2015, although I still won't put the blame on him. For the long term, I think this team is right where he envisioned it to be.

The Jays' game plan in building their team was almost identical to that of the Red Sox. They built their team around a strong offense and mediocre pitching, with the idea that their pitching staff should be good enough to keep the team in most games, and then the offense could take over. Reinforcements could be brought in at the trade deadline if the team were in contention, which is exactly what the Jays did. Whether anyone likes that plan or not, it was a sound plan, as evidenced by the Jays' place in the standings. Unfortunately, it didn't work for the Sox, but the Jays are still proof that the plan can and should work.

First off, the Sox were still reasonably in contention at the ASB. Secondly, you think the team doesn't lose any fans when they're losing? Just take a look at the responses, or lack thereof, on this board. How many posters have said that they don't watch the games anymore? Thirdly, how many posts have we read stating that there is no reason why a team with this type of budget should be operating like a small market team? There is no reason why a team with this type of budget should finish in last place? Boston's fans are more rabid and loyal than those of most teams. Unfortunately, they have recently become entitled. Whether people like to hear that or not, it's true. I can't see them being understanding and accepting of the idea of a complete rebuild. Personally, I, myself, wouldn't like the idea of a complete rebuild. I agree that with the resources that this team has, there is no reason to have to go into a 3 or 4 year rebuild period. They should be able to contend every year, even when they are developing some kids.

I read this morning that Kelly has done this before. In 2013, he finished out the 2nd half with a 9-2 record and an ERA of 1.91. Obviously, he has the ability to pitch like an ace for stretches. The question is, why can't he do this consistently?

I have always thought that Cashman was a good GM, and that he has too often been overruled by Levine. He's not Theo, but given the autonomy, he could be very Theo-like. Notice all of the moves mentioned here. Not one of them involves signing a big named free agent to a mega contract. Not one of them involves trading away the farm for a big name. Hmmmmm.
