    I was thinking when Castillo caught that ball, thank goodness they're not playing in YS. That would have kept me awake all night. A lot more drama than I ever like to see in the 9th inning, but the Sox prevailed. Woohoo!

    You don't have to sell me on the importance of defense. I am a strong proponent of good defense, despite my support of Hanley's signing. I don't think the FO took LF lightly. I just think they really believed Hanley would be "adequate", meaning he wouldn't be a great liability. We have not had strong defenders in LF recently with the likes of Manny, Bay, and Gomes, and the team has overcome that just fine.

    I realize that. They should have been good enough. That they weren't is an enigma.

    At the time, it made sense. I agree that right now, after seeing Hanley play LF, it makes little sense.

    That depends on the cost/value of that player. Good Buchholz for 1/2 a season is well worth $13 million. That being said, the FO must plan on the very real likelihood that Buchholz will not pitch the entire season. Depth, depth, depth.

    You are probably right that Eduardo will be pitching in Boston to start next season. I just don't think it would be a bad idea to start him in AAA, provided Dombrowski acquires a #1 and Kelly continues to pitch well. Also provided that Buchholz is healthy and his option is picked up. Miley also has options so he could be the odd man out. I understand that Eduardo should be in the rotation above most of the other guys. I would just much rather have him in AAA and not lose a pitcher who doesn't have options left than to let him start in Boston and have to DFA another pitcher due to roster constraints. It's very cliche' but it's also very true - you can never have enough pitching.

    Let's hope his hitting sticks around. If it does, this could be an awesome outfield for years to come.

    According to Lovullo, Hanley will not play in the outfield again this season. De Aza is gone. It looks like Betts, JBJ, and Castillo the rest of the way out.

    First off, it doesn't matter why the experts had the Sox winning the division, nor that they ended up being wrong. They had the Sox as the best team in the division (and one of the best 6 teams in baseball, I might add) going into the season. That tells me that Ben did his job. And you lost me in that previous post when you started talking about how all the playes on the Sox were cancers in the clubhouse.

    I didn't say that it was not a good plan. In fact, I have been defending the plan as a good plan all season. My preference would be to build a team around a strong pitching staff rather than around a strong offense. But even though the FO went with a plan that was against my preferences, it was a plan that should have worked.

    Pablo was supposed to be an above average defender, even in terms of range. This year has been an anomaly for him defensively. As far as Hanley's defense goes, the FO knew he was likely going to cost the team some runs defensively, but that was supposed to be more than offset by his offensive production. On top of that, when you put together a staff of "ground ball" pitchers, the OF defense should not be a huge factor.

    If you look at his WAR over the past 3 years despite all of those other things you stated, not to mention that offense was a big weakness for the team in 2014, then yes, his signing looked very good on paper.

    Once again, there is a reason why you have to dig deeper into the stats. Perhaps injury played a part in some of those high ERAs in 2014? Perhaps poor defense? No one expected them to be great, but there was good reason to expect improvement from some of them. Overall, they should have been good enough to keep the team in most games.

    If he is injured, he is injured. You can't reasonably expect management to force him to play through an injury that would not only affect his performance, but could very well also cause more damage. That said, if the injury is not legit and is rather just an excuse for Hanley to not have to play first base or to not have to work hard, then there is no defending him.

    If Kelly can pitch like he has pitched recently, I would have no problem with the Sox keeping him in the rotation to start the season and starting Rodriquez in AAA. Again, it might not be fair, but that's the best way to ensure quality depth in the rotation. If Kelly starts faltering, move him to the pen and call Rodruquez up.

    I agree that this is probably the best alignment. That being said, I think they could be shuffled around and the OF defense would hardly miss a beat.

    First off, I don't see Drew's re-signing last year as a panic move. IMO, it was a necessity once Middlebrooks got injured, and it was the best move that could reasonably be made. Besides that, I don't see how the Drew and Sizemore signings indicate wavering from the plan. They were short term signings designed to fill in the holes until the kids were fully ready.

    Since no one can predict the future with any degree of certainty, it's the best we can do. You gather all the information you can, both analytically and from scouting reports, and make educated decisions based on what looks good on paper. Sometimes you find a player or two that looks like you're going against the grain but ends up being a diamond in the rough. However, I don't think any GM is going to go with a strategy of building a team that doesn't look good on paper.

    I had no problem with the extension. IMO, Porcello pitched like a #2 guy last season, with every reason to believe that he would continue to improve with a better defense behind him and because he is entering his prime. People were projecting that he would have gotten a minimum 5 year deal, and very likely 6 years, had he reached free agency. The Sox took a calculated risk of locking him up early. It hasn't worked out to date, but I think it was a good risk to take.

    You will be happy to know that Hanley's name has not been in any recent discussions about the team's outfield alignment for next year.

    Cherington's long term plan is coming to fruition. He failed miserably in filling in the holes in 2014 and 2015, but despite what some people think, he had a long term plan/goal and he did not waiver from that. The team appears to be well set up for the foreseeable future.
