Thank goodness the suspension was not long enough to get the Yanks the extra year. I also think it was a wise decision for Chapman not to appeal it.

Well, I am sorry that you're dealing with the health issues. Not being in your situation, I can't really comment on your ability or inability to lose weight. I wish you well. Do you think it's possible that Pablo is dealing with some medical or personal issues that make it difficult for him to keep himself in good physical condition?

All I'm saying is give him a chance before jumping to all the negative conclusions based on impression. If he has not improved over last season when the games get going, have at it.

You can draw hope from the fact that players often struggle during their first year in a new city or during the first year of a big contract. You can draw hope from the fact that players tend to regress to career norms after having either a particularly good or particularly bad season. You can draw hope from all reports saying that he has looked much improved in the field and at the plate. It's ST. You have to have hope.

I appreciate you being able to state your points in such a reasonable manner. As I've said, I can certainly understand people being skeptical over Pablo's ability to rebound. You are right, Pablo is going to have to produce to win the fans back. Heaven help him if he starts off slowly, either offensively or defensively.

I'm sure the Latin America media is not the feeding frenzy that the Boston media is. Regardless, Pablo has surely had to deal with questions about his weight and his conditioning throughout his entire career. I can't blame him for being wary of speaking to any media, and I also can't blame him for being a little snarky when the topic of his conditioning is brought up. That said, coming across as anything less than cooperative towards the media will certainly not help the fans' perception of him. He's not doing himself any favors. -
The only difference between his "attacks" and most of the other posters attacks is that he doesn't try to hide his attacks behind other guises, which is even worse, if you ask me.

If I were Pablo, I wouldn't want to answer questions regarding his weight or offseason regimen either. The media has been ruthless with him.

I guess that depends on how JBJ hits this season. I tend to agree with you though. JBJ's defense is much better than Young's, so I'm not sure any improvement in offense is worth it.

This is exactly right. He deserves a chance to at least play a real game before the crucifying begins.

There is nothing creepy about it. Cycles and I have been posting together and playing fantasy baseball together since about 2009. I consider him a dear friend. He always has my back, which I appreciate. I appreciate that you and others think that I can defend myself, which I can, but that doesn't mean that I don't also appreciate someone else sticking up for me. I think anyone would appreciate that. He is a good guy.

And that's the other part of it. People are unhappy with the contract (which I was against myself), and so they take it out on Panda. The contract (and the ticket prices) are not Panda's fault. That is on the FO.

No one's expecting Gold Glove defense, but he should be league average, which he has been for his entire career up until last year.

I mean no offense by this question, but if losing weight and keeping it off is so easy, then why are you, in your own words, fat? People know the health risks of being overweight, and they are many. For people who are "addicted" to food, controlling that addiction is as difficult as controlling the addiction to any other vice. I don't think most people happily choose to be fat.

Here's the thing though. People keep saying that Panda and Hanley don't care. That is pure speculation from both the media and the fans. It's character assassination from people who really have no idea. Hanley has done everything the team has asked him to do - for two seasons now. By all reports, Panda has worked very hard during the offseason on his conditioning. So, he doesn't look as svelte as you all want him to look. That doesn't equate to him not caring. And he has also said that he has something to prove to the fans and to his teammates. By all reports, he also looks much better on the field this season than he did last season. The resentment against him is slanting people's opinions of him in an unfair way.

Good-natured ribbing among teammates is one thing. The type of scorn, resentment, and yes, hatred I'm reading here is something entirely different.

The only reason his weight is such a big issue is because he stunk last year. If he had played at his career norms, none of it would be a big deal. This it the spin that the media is putting on it, and the fans are falling right in line. This guy states it rather well.

Because players often have bad seasons, then rebound. As I said, I can understand the skepticism about whether he can rebound or not. I don't understand the hatred, and quite frankly, that's what it is.

I completely agree. I thought Mookie looked really comfortable in CF, and besides JBJ's great arm, I think he is better suited to handle Fenway's tough right field.

Yes, give them a chance to play some actual games this season. They stunk last year. Has no player ever rebounded from a bad year? I don't agree with your perception of their offseasons and their attitudes. I get that you don't like what you see. That may or may not translate into how they play this season. They may very well stink as badly as they did last season, but spring season is far too early to write them off. Someone (I think it was you) asked me last year at what point we could write Pablo and Hanley off as lost causes, to which I responded midseason this year. Give them a chance. They may surprise you.

As far as who the Sox break performer will be, I think that the "breakouts" are going to come from Mookie and Xander building off of last season, and Pedroia and Price doing their veteran things. Also, I see significant improvements from the trio that stunk last year, Porcello, Hanley, and Pablo. Keep in mind that a significant improvement from a -2 WAR does not mean that Hanley and Pablo will be all stars, but rather 2-3 WAR players.

I agree that the defensive guy is your best bet at catcher. I think Vazquez will start in AAA just because he's still recovering from TJ surgery, but I think he'll become our permanent starting catcher by June. This is not any knock against Swihart. I just think that Vazquez' defense is that good and that important.
