  1. Not only was he willing to try a new position (twice), but knowing that he would not need to be as athletic playing in the OF, Hanley added quite a bit of bulk before the 2015 season to make himself stronger and, hopefully, more durable. Then this past offseason, Hanley was asked to trim down and lose some of that bulk, which he did. Hanley has done everything that has been asked of him. Hanley has also asked Farrell, on several occasions, to stay in the game 2 or 3 extra innings. And Hanley has asked Farrell on several occa
  2. The way Dombrowski wants Hanley to bat is the way he batted his entire career, until last season. It seems like last year he got a little "swing for the fences" happy, which is not the type of hitter Hanley has been throughout his career. Dombrowski just wants Hanley to go back to being the type of hitter that has made him a very good hitter. And he is a very good hitter, when healthy. The point being, if that is they type of batter Hanley has always been, then saying that it is pretty obvious that Hanley does not want to return to being that type of hitter has no merit.
  3. I agree that criticism of Pablo's defense from last year is fair game. He has not gotten off to the best of starts this preseason, which only makes matters worse. But as I've said many times, I think the great majority of people, fans and media, have already made up their minds about him and have written him off before giving him a fair chance to make amends for last season. The constant scrutiny can't be helping any. I'm not sure that Pablo's attitude suggests that he hasn't accepted responsibility. From what I've heard, he has been working hard with Butterfield every morning before team workouts. Butterfield's reports about Pablo's effort and attitude suggest he really is trying.
  4. If I were Pablo, I certainly would not be reading the sports pages. Everything being printed/reported about him right now is harsh. Pablo probably is being overly sensitive. The reporter that Pablo was upset with did not write anything that wasn't true. That said, one of the other beat writers said that it really was not a big deal, and that players getting upset with or confronting reporters happens periodically. The incidents usually go unreported. Regardless of how overly sensitive Pablo is or isn't, the point is that yesterday's incident shouldn't have made the headlines. It only did because Pablo is everyone's favorite whipping boy right now.
  5. This really should have been a non-issue that we, as fans, should never even have heard about. Players taking issue with something a reporter has printed happens regularly. If it weren't Pablo, it probably wouldn't have been reported. Unfortunately, since Pablo played so poorly last season, everything that he does is going to be magnified tenfold.
  6. I don't know about that. Paps was very fun loving in his postseason celebrations. Dude was a whack job.
  7. Papelbon deserves the respect of being a very good closer for a long time. He is still effective in closing out the games, which is the ultimate goal, though he has been less efficient in getting the job done than Koji is. If we didn't have Kimbrel, I'd take Pap back, aside from his large contract. For me, it's not a matter of not having respect for Pap. For me, it's the belief that paying $15 million a year for a closer is ridiculous, when you can get the same production for a lot, lot less.
  8. I think the bigger issue with Kopech is his attitude and maturity. This is strike 2 against him. I understand that he's only 19, but there are hundreds of other young prospects and they have enough maturity and common sense not to behave like this.
  9. It's not only the limited number of innings. It's the value of 'replacement level' as well. Relievers, including closers, are a lot easier to replace than starting pitchers or position players.
  10. LOL Nice. That one took me a minute....
  11. On a bright note, Craig had 2 hits today!
  12. No need to send a message to Pablo, IMO. I would guess that both he and Hanley have been told in no uncertain terms that if they don't produce, they will not get the playing time. Dombrowski will give them a fair chance to prove that they deserve to keep their starting roles, but I don't think he's going to mess around with keeping them in the line up if they don't deserve to be there. I agree, there is 0% chance that Shaw is not on the Opening Day roster.
  13. The Sox are going to start giving Shaw playing time in LF, so he could be insurance for Castillo as well as Pablo and Hanley. If all 3 players are playing adequately, Shaw would still get ample at bats in a super sub role.
  14. If it were a longer term injury, later in the season when you have a better idea of how everyone is performing, I think you give Owens/Johnson/Elias a shot. For a few starts at the beginning of the season, you go with Wright. One reason is that he is more experienced and more polished. But the main reason is that the other guys have options. If one of them is on the Opening Day roster, then someone else is going to be cut. Why cut a player before having a chance to see if he can help out the big league club if you don't have to? IMO, you want to keep as much depth and flexibility on the team as you can.
  15. I'm not trying to say that Wright should fill in for Rodriguez because he will be as good as Rodriguez. I see Wright as a very solid #4 or #5 pitcher. He is not going to replace Rodriguez in terms of ability/production. Rodriguez shouldn't (hopefully) miss more than a few starts. For that short a time at the beginning of the season, Wright is the logical choice.
  16. Mattingly, who is very familiar with Hanley's athleticism and ability, commented yesterday that he thought Hanley would be fine at 1B. Of course, he also said that he thought Hanley would be fine in left field last year, but that's beside the point. It is difficult to believe that a player with Hanley's athleticism and experience at SS cannot or would not catch a pop up.
  17. His effort probably did wane. However, someone (Farrell I believe) commented that Hanley put in extra practice whenever the team asked him to. The likely reason that the team didn't ask him to put in extra time a lot was to try to keep him from getting injured, especially after the shoulder injury.
  18. Points from today's broadcast: 1. Remy said that Hanley and Pablo are on a back field every morning at 8:30, before team workouts, working on their defense. 2. Remy on Hanley - "If he doesn't succeed, it won't be because of lack of effort." 3. Hanley made a nice catch on a pop up in foul territory in front of the 1B dug out.
  19. You are entitled to your opinion, but seriously, there is nothing to substantiate what you are saying. As UN likes to say, quit making stuff up.
  20. ST serves its purpose, you just have to know not to take ST stats at face value. You must also realize that the correlation between ST W-L record and regular season W-L record is very weak.
  21. If Rodriguez is not ready to go on Opening Day, which is pretty much a lock at this point, I'd be very surprised if someone other than Wright gets his rotation spot to start the season. Wright is virtually guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster Putting Wright in the rotation gives the Sox the opportunity to give some other guys a look in the pen that they might not have otherwise been able to do. Escobar has no options and Marmol has an opt out on Opening Day.
  22. ^^This. Remy has complimented both both Hanley and Pablo on their defensive work in ST. Hanley was still in a recent game in the 8th inning (the only regular player still in) so that he could get more practice. He had also asked to stay in a game earlier in the preseason. Hanley may very well end up being a disaster at 1B, but the accusations that are being made regarding how much he cares or whether he even enjoys playing have no merit.
  23. You and Goose Gossage would get along well.
  24. Farrell has had more than his share of "not the brightest things to say" moments lately.
