  1. I don't believe Lucchino works for the Cubs. That won't be a problem.
  2. Two things had a lot to do with that: 1. Their draft position was never that great. 2. Their organizational philosophy was to draft the best player available.

    The Cubs

    Ha.
  4. Yes, they should be able to, particularly if our starters can regularly go 6+ innings.
  5. This post has nothing to do with anything in this thread.
  6. I have no problem with Farrell using Koji in this instance. While winning the game was probably fairly safe, getting this home stand off to a good start was important. The injury makes the decision look like a bad one, but IMO, there was nothing wrong with it. Can you imagine the outcry if someone else were put in and he blew the game when Koji was available?
  7. Not all of the picks worked out, but I said he was a master at getting extra draft picks. The more picks you have, the better the chances are that you hit gold with some of them. You can knock Theo all you want, but he will already go down in history as one of the greatest GMs. If the Cubbies win the World Series in the next couple of years, forget about it.
  8. Fair enough point about it reportedly being the going rate. I'm thinking in terms up potential value given up (WAR/dollars) versus value received. I understand that it will be a long time before for full value of this trade is known.
  9. This is very true. I like the trade overall, but we cannot discount the long term impact of any trade, even if that impact is 5 years away. To this point, I don't think that Dombrowski has really hurt our farm system, thanks to how strong it was to begin with.
  10. Even if Pomeranz' on field performance is not a significant part of us winning a ring, there are also indirect effects that his signing brings to the team. For one, a stronger starting rotation, one that can eat innings and allow the manager to use his bullpen as designed rather than out of need, makes the BP stronger. For two, the message sent to the team by a trade like this is rather powerful, IMO. If we win a ring in the next 3 years, the trade for Pomeranz will be worth it, even if Espinoza goes on to be a perennial All Star. It's the same way I feel about the Peavy trade. A bird in the hand...
  11. I think we are more or less in agreement on these things, although I like the trade for Pomeranz, even though I believe we overpaid. IMO, it needed to be done. I thought we largely overpaid for Kimbrel, especially when you also consider the salary that we are paying him. Like you, I felt like we should have added a bit more to the package and tried to get one of those starters you mention. However, it very well might have been a pipe dream.
  12. Our projected #1-4 relievers are currently injured, though Tazawa should be back soon. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but a bullpen of Ziegler, Tazawa, Barnes, Hembree, Ross, Layne, Buchholz, and Kelly likely replacing one of those guys doesn't look half bad. How big is the Ziegler trade now? The bullpen has looked pretty good since the Kimbrel implosion. Much of that has to do with the starting rotation doing its job over that stretch. If ERod can pitch like we hope he can, and Pomeranz pitches close to what he has so far this season, that not only stabilizes our rotation, but it helps to stabilize our pen as well. Hopefully, Koji's injury isn't too serious.
  13. Manny kept me entertained, both with his hitting talent and his on field antics. Not a fan of his off field antics, particularly the incident with the clubhouse attendant and his supposed quitting on his team. It's a shame that his legacy will be tainted by things like that. The showboating, the infamous cutoff, the trip to the monster, etc. - I loved that stuff.
  14. Keep the hot July and the string of good starts going Pomeranz! Get it done!
  15. I would absolutely take that. I honestly don't know what to expect, but I'm excited about his start. On a side note, I've always liked Peavy. It was nice to see him pitch last night.
  16. I wanted Kelly to be given another shot in our rotation after the way he finished last season.
  17. Ha. I reallly like you Slasher.
  18. Five games can be made up in a strong, two week stretch. I understand that the task becomes more difficult when there are 5 teams to jump over, but I still wouldn't count the Yankees out, much to my dismay. The Yankees could be both sellers and buyers, or could do a partial sell, and still remain competitive enough this year. The best case scenario, as Jack mentioned, would be for the Yankees to play well enough until the end of the month to keep them from selling, then fall off the face of the earth in August. I am not happy that the Yankees have won the first two games from the Os.

The Mets don't bother me, but like we've mentioned before, I don't get all the hate for the Cubs.

I watched the end of this game after the Sox game. The Cubbies blew a great opportunity win that game. Great finish = Good baseball
  21. A+ post. IMO, Henry panicked after the 2 last place finishes and didn't give Ben a chance to see his plan through. I agree with you that Ben would have been more aggressive this year in terms of acquiring starting pitching and trading some prospects.
  22. Theo was the master at getting those comp picks.
