  1. LOL Bell Trust me when I say that the statistical methods used are sound. These geeks read and study each other's research, and if there is anything that is the least bit questionable, it will be questioned.
  2. What is the protest going on between Venezuela and Mexico? I don't know all the tie breaker rules well enough. There are some tie breaker games on tonight. Should be exciting.
  3. And then there was the USA versus Canada game. {yawn} However, most of the games I've see have had a playoff atmosphere.
  4. I was really excited about the Smith trade when it happened. I look forward to having him back in our bullpen.
  5. Spare me the "you're a pollyanna who sees everything through rose colored glasses but I'm a realist" argument. I am well aware that Price is not out of the woods and that he could very well suffer a set back. All I've said is that I'm optimistic about what I've heard and read so far.
  6. Completely agree with this also. I really hope that management does not try to move Swihart to another position again before he's had a real chance to show what he can do as a catcher.
  7. Completely agree Boggs. I would hate to lose either Vazquez or Leon without really getting a good feel for where any of our catchers are at this point.
  8. I don't think it's so much that they'd be 'upset', but that they would prefer the consistency. Honestly, I don't think any of our guys would express unhappiness with being moved around. They would say that they'll do whatever Farrell thinks is best for the team and I think they would mean it. But I still believe that some would prefer the same spot. I don't trust any manager to set the optimal line up, but I trust Farrell to know what his players are comfortable and confident with.
  9. Leon will almost certainly not hit like he did during those two months, but I really think that he can be at least league average offensively for a catcher. Though I think Swihart can get there with more reps, I am not confident that he is ready to be a starting catcher defensively.
  10. Very good game. The final score is misleading, 10-3, but the DR scored 7 runs in the 11th, given runners on 1st and 2nd to start the inning. I feel bad for Colombia, who didn't even qualify to play in the last WBC. They played tough against the US and the DR, both overwhelming favorites. Instead of being 3-0 and winning the pool, they are 1-2 and on the brink of elimination.
  11. Did not mean to disrespect your opinion, which I do respect. I really think it would be a bad decision, however, to lose one of Leon or Vazquez based off of spring training results. JMO
  12. There is another good game on tv right now between the DR and Colombia. 3-3, bottom of the 8th. This game has implications for Team USA also. Colombia just won't go away.
  13. Agreed, I think he will get there. I strongly believe that he needs to start the season in AAA and that he needs to focus on catching only.
  14. 1. I make it a point never to have Red Sox players on my team. 2. I don't think Price would be worth a first round fantasy pick if he were fully healthy. 3. What does that have to do with being optimistic about his progress anyway?
  15. I would be very surprised if Swihart wins the job out of spring training, barring injury to Leon or Vazquez. It would also be a very stupid decision, IMO.
  16. To be fair, Erod and the team also told us that the first injury was not serious, and the initial report was that he would be back in 72 hours. Three days turned into 3 months. As far as Swihart is concerned, my top priority for a catcher is his work behind the plate. I don't care how good his offense is if he's not a good receiver and the pitchers don't like throwing to him. I'm not saying that's the case, just saying that his .300 BA and his speed won't matter to me without the defense.
  17. Baseball players are very much creatures of habit and superstitious. That said, I'm sure many players can also move around comfortably and not be bothered by it one bit. IMO, a manager should cater to those with superstitions, within reason, because having a player feeling comfortable and confident likely benefits the team more than tweaking the lineup according to splits, etc. OTOH, players also have to be willing to do what is in the best interest of the team. It is Farrell's job to know his players well enough to know how to best set the line up.
  18. Meanwhile, Japan and the Netherlands were tied 6-6 in the 11th. For this tournament, once the game gets to the 11th, the batting team starts the inning with runners on 1st and 2nd. The first batter up for Japan sacrificed the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The next batter got a base hit. 8-6 Japan, just like that. The Netherlands will get the same opportunity in their at bat.
  19. I completely understand and even agree with that sentiment.
  20. We'll just have to disagree on the topic of batting order. The changes in the lineup just are not significant enough to worry about micromanaging it on a daily basis.
  21. If he'd take a minor league deal, I would definitely pick him up. He may not amount to anything, but it couldn't hurt. That said, I agree that he's probably still holding out for a big league contract.
  22. Party pooper.
  23. Poor Miller. Even though the U.S. lost, that was a really enjoyable game. The DR team is tough. During the game, they showed highlights from the Venezuela game, which looked like a great game as well. The point I wanted to bring up about that game is that the Royals had a pretty big scare with Salvador Perez having to be helped off the field with a knee injury suffered from a collision at the plate. It sounds like Perez will be okay (nothing broken), but injury is a legitimate concern of this tournament.
  24. I just finished watching the game between Mexico and Italy earlier today. Going to the bottom of the 9th, Mexico was up 9-5 on their home field, though they were the away team. Relievers Sergio Romo, followed by Oliver Perez, allowed Italy, the underdog, to score 5 runs without recording an out. The crowd was deflated and in complete shock. I felt bad for them, but since I had no horse in that race, I thoroughly enjoyed the ending.
