    Is it possible that he made some mechanical adjustments? If his BABIP were .400 with no difference in his line drive rate or his hard contact rate, then I would agree that it was all a fluke or randomness. What about his improved line drive rate though? Doesn't that suggest that there's a possibility that he may have become a better hitter and that it wasn't all randomness? And remember, I am the queen of randomness. I'm not saying that he'll be 2016 good, but I do think he will be well improved from his 2015 numbers.

    That's the thing. They won't quit. I don't mean to offend anyone with the following (though I probably will). Non stat baseball fans have been allowed to claim that things are true and are fact for decades without any proof that they are. It's what they know, it's what they see, it's the way that it's always been, and so it must be true. The reality is, much of what has been accepted as true really isn't. At least the stat geeks are making an attempt to understand what's really going on in the game, not just accepting what has been assumed for all those years.

The Red Sox will let the battle for the backup catching spot play out through the final days of camp, but Christian Vazquez appears to have the inside track with Blake Swihart likely to be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. "I'll be honest with you -- part of this is the individual play and the overall organizational depth," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "We're not going to deny that. That's important. We like both guys -- I know that. We like all our catchers."

    I don't think anyone is saying that Pom is going to be an ace, just that he will be a solid piece of our rotation, IF HEALTHY. I agree that health might be a big issue with him, and Farrell sounds like they need to 'manage' his innings. That said, I think we will be pleasantly surprised by Pom this year. When it's midseason, and I'm getting the Playoff Party Bus warmed up, I'll save you a seat.

    I think the question with him will be whether he is truly healthy or not. He was not fully healthy when he pitched for us the 2nd half of last season. If he's fully healthy, I think he will be a pleasant surprise.

    No, that's not until the 2021 cliff.

    IMO, Leon will be about midway between his 2015 and 2016 seasons. He won't be able to sustain that near .400 BABIP, but his line drive and hard contact rates have improved, which are good signs for him moving forward.

    It's not a certain percentage that a player is allowed to fail. It's having a year to year correlation that says that clutch is a repeatable skill. Or having data that statistically shows that a batter is doing something special beyond what would be expected in a randomly generated sample.

    Things are coming together nicely with this team. Good pitching, good offense, good defense. Just a little over a week to go!

    I think he'll end up being a solid starter for us, provided he's healthy.

    I probably would not have made the trade for Sale. IMO, it was a move that was not necessary. He's a nice luxury, but he wasn't necessary.

    I too am glad that I'm not running the Sox. Buch is capable of being much, much better than a 7th starter.

    Even if Swihart excelled in all phases of catching during spring training, I would start him in AAA. As of now, it is unclear what we have in any of our catchers, and spring training is not going to answer those questions. IMO, we need time to sort out what we have before we risk losing either Leon or Vazquez.

    Statisticians have acknowledged that one of the difficulties in proving whether 'clutch' exists or not is the lack of a precise definition of what clutch is.

    Some things are very difficult to quantify, and statisticians acknowledge these shortcomings. At least they are attempting to see whether their is any validity to ideas and claims that have been accepted as true just because that's the way it's always been. You might have a problem with that, but I very much appreciate the research. To me, it's far better than accepting that things are because they just are. What if they're not?

    That is not what statisticians do. This is a false premise.

    I understood the financial desire to trade Buch, but my preference all along would have been to keep him.

    Farrell announced officially today that Leon would be the Opening Day catcher. Swihart is all but guaranteed to start the season in AAA.
