  1. You can't simply add RBIs and runs scored to account for the difference between the two. Looking at wRC+ is probably a better comparison. Ortiz had 163 and Moreland had 105. I didn't miss Hanley in my list of players likely to regress. I don't think he was 'likely' to regress. I very much disagree that it was easy to see us falling off by more than 100 runs. Yes, we were likely to fall off, but not by so much that we would not still be a top offensive team.
  2. Of course it's all speculation, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking with it until someone shows me documentation otherwise. My opinion is not just formed out of the blue. There is good reason that I have the opinion that I do.
  3. Yeah, but even with that, of all the players that Papi has seen play, he chooses JD as the best? That's not a knock on JD. I think he was a lot better than most people give him credit for. I just don't see him as being on the list of the best.
  4. Which, in general, is the correct philosophy to go by. Henry then panicked and did an about face with Price.
  5. Thank you for your defense of Ben. I, too, blame Lucchino for the Lester fiasco, among other things. I'm too tired to go through my whole defense of Cherington again. Yes MVP, I'm looking at you.
  6. Leake's current ERA of 1.94 is nonsense. In fact, it pretty much ticks me off. The Sox cannot be fooled into thinking that he's that good of a pitcher. He's not. Go Sox!!!
  7. And this gives me the opportunity to post my favorite quote about JD. This comes from an unknown scout, when JD was first acquired, before he ever played his first game with the Red Sox: "Drew will easily get to balls that Trot had to dive for, and he will be criticized for it." How true did that turn out to be?
  8. I loved JD as well and spent countless hours defending him against his many naysayers. But I agree, calling him the best player he's ever seen is rather absurd.
  9. Papi: My Story, a book co-written by David Ortiz and Michael Holley, has continued to create headlines as of late. While the now retired Boston Red Sox slugger has seemingly ruled out a return to baseball, the heralded designated hitter just can’t remove himself from the limelight. His latest comments stem from an interesting quote regarding his former teammate, J.D. Drew. Specifically, “Big Papi” responded with quite the surprising response when asked, “Who was the best player [you] ever saw?” “When J.D. wanted to play, he was the best player I’ve ever seen,” said Ortiz, via Jack Dickey of Sports Illustrated. “No b.s. Listen, I said, when he wanted to play, he was the best. … Some days I wanted to kill him … he would come out of the game because his left nut was hurting. It made no sense sometimes, but that’s how he was.”
  10. Leake has been pitching very well. It's time to put a stop to that nonsense. Score some freakin' runs and win this game!
  11. Thank you Bell.
  12. I don't know that I'd rather have kept Shaw because he was pretty awful after the first two months of the season last year. I think part of the problem with Moreland is that he was not supposed to be our everyday 1B. Hanley was supposed to get the bulk of the playing time at 1B. Hanley's injury has not allowed Farrell to use his players the way they were intended to be used.
  13. I would expect Betts to be Betts, and improvements from 3B, LF and possibly Bogaerts. Some regression from Leon, Pedrioa, and JBJ was probable. But again, we outscored the next closest AL team by over 100 runs, so even if our offense was expected to be 100 runs worse, it would still be one of the tops in the league. I have no problem with the starting team that Dombrowski assembled for this year.
  14. I was born a Sox fan - there was no way around it. I have those pictures you speak of in your opening post of me in diapers and a Sox hat. My first trip to Fenway was when I was 5, though I don't remember much about it. Baseball (and other Boston sports) were always on our tv when I was growing up. I would watch games often enough, but was never a true die hard fan when I was a kid. I actually had a life back then. Probably the heartbreak of 1986 was when I started to understand the emotional attachment to the team. Roger Clemens was my first baseball idol and crush. Oddly enough, it wasn't until I moved out of the area and got the Extra Innings Package that I started watching EVERY game of the season.
  15. Bosoxmal, there was no disrespect meant towards you and this was certainly not a ploy to get you to stop posting. You are a very good poster and contributor to the site. I just don't see the need to start a new thread about every thought that comes into one's head. That is all. Carry on.
  16. Papi said the best player he ever saw play was JD Drew. I find that interesting, to say the least.
  17. Memo to my beloved team: Just score some freakin' runs and WIN!
  18. Sawxheads was the first site I ever posted at. It was a good site, but the 2011 season proved to be more than that site could withstand. LOL
  19. It's kind of that same thing in thinking that an AL manager would not know how to do a double switch. Let's give these guys some credit.
  20. Exactly. Kimbrel is the best reliever in the game right now. But the difference in value between him and other good closers is not worth the extra cost.
  21. I completely agree with the part in bold.
  22. So, if Sale were pitching like Pomeranz is right now, is that Dombrowski's fault? If Price never makes another start for us, is that Dombrowski's fault? I can see the argument in blaming him for Pomeranz because there were some sketchy medicals and Dombrowski declined to take back that trade, but he really can't be blamed for the other injuries. That said, he can be blamed for his erroneous team building philosophy.
