That's the way hitters need to get to Kimbrel - jump on that first fastball. Kimbrel was due for a blown save, I guess. While we never want to see those, if you're going to blow a save, that's the way to do it. Don't give up the tie, and hope your team comes back to win. It really doesn't feel bad in that case.

Porcello did not pitch great, but IMO, it was a step in the right direction. He kept the team in the game and went 6 1/3. You want better from him, but can't really complain about that.

The nice thing is, his defense is a repeatable skill.

I have Travis pegged as our long term 1B. Maybe I'm being more optimistic than I should be, but from what I've read and seen, he would be solid at that position. Perhaps more importantly, he would be cost controlled. I would hate to see him traded, leaving another hole in our impending cliff. I'm no longer convinced, as I once was, that we've seen the last of Pablo. I think that depends on how well he does in his rehab assignment.

Comfort level is real. I didn't say it was measurable. I leave that up to the manager to decipher.

It's not a cliff if the team is projected to do well but doesn't live up to expectations. It's a cliff when you know, going into the season, that your team is likely going nowhere. 2014 and 2015 were not the fault of the GM, as much as most people want to believe otherwise.

The problem with throwing the kitchen sink at it is that it does not guarantee anything. And then we're left with even a steeper cliff than we currently have. I am against the 'win now at any cost' philosophy. I think there has to be a more balanced approach between short and long terms.

The link did not work for me, but I agree with your overall point. I 'hate' the Yankees, but that's just sports rivalry talk. I don't wish any ill will on any of their players, even the creepy ones like Joba Chamberlain when he played for them. And if it's a feel good story, then it makes me feel good regardless of the team.

Why? Because that's the way it's always been? My point is that how do you know Betts would be more comfortable or a better fit hitting 3rd than he is hitting 1st? Your opinion of what type of batter should hit 3rd does not take into account Betts' comfort level and human element any more than the statistics saying he should bat 1st does.

I didn't either. I stated several times that they were playing over their heads. That said, I still wouldn't count either team out. The Yankees have the resources to make some moves at the deadline, if they choose to.

I have not crowned us Division Champs yet. I'm just saying that I feel pretty good having a 3 game lead at this point.

I do not disagree Dojji with most of your post. I have said many times that the FO should not act rashly. I should have added the stipulation of calling up Devers, if he is ready. That said, IMO, if Dombrowski feels 'desperate' enough, he will call up Devers whether he is fully ready or not.

I would be okay with this type of trade. Like you, I am hoping not to have to part with Groome, Devers, or Travis. I don't see our situation at 3B as being as urgent as our need for a starting pitcher was last year.

Who knows? Pablo might even be the answer to our 3B problem. But yeah, you have to feel pretty good about a 3 game lead and a better record than last season, especially considering our struggles.

There is no reliance on statistical data alone. I have stated many times that putting a batter where he feels comfortable would be more beneficial than trying to put a batter in his prototypical slot. Unless, of course, a manager is willing to buck all tradition and go completely against the grain. I post my data only to debate your opinion that your best RBI guy bats 3rd. You are basing that opinion on the 'that's the way it's always been done' argument, which less to do with knowing the underlying reasons for batting Betts where he is batting as the statistical data does.

Knowledge of the players is a big consideration. Line up tweaks make so little difference that it is more beneficial to put a batter where he feels the most comfortable.

A bat would definitely help, though the key is still having our current guys hitting like they are capable of hitting. I have no doubt that Dombrowski will improve our 3B. The question is how he goes about doing that. I would not deplete the farm of any of our top prospects, though I don't think Dombrowski would have an issue doing that. I would look for an inexpensive trade for a solid, professional 3B. If one cannot be found at a reasonable price, then I'd call up Devers.

Porcello needs to keep the team in the game through at least 5 innings, preferably 6 or 7. Just keep the team in the game. The offense should be able to come through. Keep the good times rolling through Texas! WIN!!!
