  1. This will make the fan base happy, though it really won't make a difference in production. Perhaps it will take some pressure off of Moreland, which could help.
  2. Sounds like a good read. I was wondering if Law conducted any new studies that either supported or disagreed with previous studies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like he is pretty much just restating what previous studies and books have already stated.
  3. Pablo was dealing with some personal issues, a messy divorce and also something to do with his brother. Perhaps those things affected his play. Yes, Pablo should have stayed in San Fran where he was loved.
  4. The problem with this line up is not the absence of Papi.
  5. As is pretty evident in some of these posts, defense is undervalued at the expense of offense. Part of the reason that our pitchers have been so good is the defense they have playing behind them.
  6. Ding ding ding!
  7. Our pitchers are pitching great. How much of that is due to our catchers is difficult to measure. With that being said, I would not trade our catchers for more offense at that position.
  8. That could be, but whether at home or on the road, he's the pitcher I want on the mound. It was nice to start the road trip off with a win.
  9. Absolutely on ERod. I have posted many times about the importance of depth. If I'm not mistaken, Fister cannot be sent down without his permission, so we either keep him on the team or risk losing him. I think it behooves the team to determine the best that they can whether Fister is worth a spot on the 25 man roster. Also, I think there is merit to the idea of giving the starters an extra day of rest. Farrell still has to make decisions based on the whole season, not just today's game.
  10. Farrell received a lot of criticism over giving the staters an extra day of rest and using Fister in lieu of Sale. I get that criticism, but looking at it from the other side, Farrell still has to manage for the season, not just for today's game. A little extra rest now might pay off in the long run. Also, how nice was it to have Sale pitch the opener of the west coast trip and start us of with a win. Another thing, Sale will pitch twice on the tough road trip rather than just once. So there are some benefits to that decision.
  11. Interesting stuff. Thanks.
  12. I have no disagreement with this post.
  13. The run expectancy matrices that I have seen have slightly different numbers than Law's, but that depends on what sample of data you're looking at. I'm good with Law's numbers as well. Out of curiosity, what does Law say about batting order? Is there anything different than what the previous studies have found?
  14. I don't have any problems with trying to advance runners with a hit and run or a steal. I am strongly opposed to using a sac bunt in the vast majority of cases. Yes, individual factors have to be taken into account, but even with that, it is almost never a good idea to sac bunt. I don't remember the exact number, but a batter has to be really bad, like pitcher bad, in order for sac bunting to be more beneficial than swinging away.
  15. Also, much randomness going on in that game. Good stuff.
  16. One observation about Leon being thrown out at home plate when Holt's pop up was dropped: Why was Leon tagging up? If the ball had been caught, there was no way he was going to score. IMO, he should have taken a few steps towards home plate. He would have had time to get back to 3rd if the ball was caught, and he might have been able to score after the ball was dropped.
  17. If there is a man on 2nd base and 0 outs (whether there is a man on 1st or not), a successful bunt increases the chance of scoring 1 run. I think in every other case, a sac bunt decreases the odds.
  18. Agree 100%.
  19. I am not a fan of the sac bunt at all. Basically, if it's not the 8th or 9th inning, playing for one run, with a runner on 2nd base and 0 outs, I would not call for a sac bunt. And even in the situation I just described, it depends on who is up to bat. I much prefer a hit and run or a straight out steal. But it still has to be the right players and the right situations.
  20. An audition for the bullpen?
  21. Young is more than fine as a 4th outfielder. Part of the problem with Morleand is that he was not supposed to be an everyday 1B. Maybe with Hanley finally being healthy enough to play some 1B, Farrell with will the flexibility he thought he would have at the beginning of the season.
  22. The good news is, we have Sale to start off the road trip.
  23. I am wondering if this was solely Farrell's decision or if it could be a directive from Dombrowski. As some others stated, maybe it was a last 'audition' before deciding to DFA him? As far as Vazquez playing 3rd base, it was either that or lose the DH position.
  24. I was just thinking the same. It figures that when the offense finally scores some runs, the pitching gives up 8.
  25. Muddlers Row is very apt. I like it!
