  1. Fair post Emp. I am certainly glad that the FO didn't trade Devers for a quick fix, and agree that would be the ultimate panic move. I still believe that had the outcomes of recent series for both us and the Yankees been different, Devers would not be called up, hence my feeling that this was a panic move. JMO.
  2. Or maybe the Sox are due for a turnaround!
  3. Good post Nick. You'll be happy to know that I am on your Devers bandwagon!!!
  4. Ding Ding Ding! I am very excited to see him play, and I'm glad that the team called him up, panic move or not. I hope he can ignite our offense. Sometimes a young player like this is all it takes. That said, we do need to temper our expectations of Devers, not necessarily with what he can do personally, but in terms of him 'saving' the rest of our offense.
  5. I agree with Van's assessment of the catching situation. The catchers are not the problem, and indeed, they are likely part of the reason why our pitchers are pitching well.
  6. I just don't think the team is going to go over the luxury tax limit at the end of July, after working so hard up to this point to stay under it. I have read that the team can take on the prorated salary of $19 mil without going over the limit. That should be enough to pick up a decent upgrade.
  7. I am on board with this plan.
  8. I have always believed that how a manager manages the players and the clubhouse is more important than the in game decisions. I am usually supportive of Farrell, but as I've said before, when the entire team (offensive) is underperforming and looks listless, it is fair to question what's going on from the coaching standpoint. Farrell needs to light a fire under these guys. As far as the pathetic offense is concerned, Chili Davis, where are you?
  9. Hopefully Devers will provide a spark to the team. Outside of that, he is not going to be able to 'save' this team. Everyone on the offense is underperforming right now except for Pedroia.
  10. Post of the year!
  11. Rodriguez was not the problem. He wasn't great, but he was decent enough that most offenses can make a game out of it.
  12. It is sad. I try to be optimistic, but I have found myself thinking the same way. As soon as we get down, even by one run, I'm thinking that the game is over. I don't like thinking this way. My baseball spirit has been broken. Somebody please snap me out of it!!!
  13. I agree that trading away the farm to get a mediocre rental would be a panic move as well. Why not stick with Marrero/Holt/Lin for a little longer?
  14. Very solid post oldtimer.
  15. I don't have lots of doubts, but I think his defensive readiness is a valid concern. I am actually very excited about having him up. I'm just questioning the timing of the call up. I would much rather go with Devers than overpay for a marginal upgrade.
  16. Marrero is not the long term solution at 3B, but he did stabilize our defense at a time when it was sorely needed.
  17. Me too.
  18. After the incident, Farrell and Dombrowski reportedly spoke to David and 'handled' the matter. Was that enough? I can't say. An apology to Eck from both Price and Farrell, whether public or private, would have been nice.
  19. Two things I've read about this: 1. From the dweeb a couple of days ago: Perhaps more significant, however, is what Devers does defensively. He’s committed three errors (two fielding, one throwing) in five games at third base in Pawtucket, a reminder that he remains a work in progress at the position. It’s also worth noting the defensive transition to the big leagues at third base can be particularly daunting, given the need to stand the closest to home plate while dealing with bat speeds that are rarely replicated in the minors. If it looks like he’ll need a while to field his position reliably, his timetable for the big leagues may be pushed back to September. If he shows rapid improvement, then he could accelerate his timetable, depending on what kind of trade the Red Sox make to address their worst-in-the-AL production at third base. 2. The second is a very valid point from PA about how important our left side defense is with our LH heavy rotation. That doesn't necessarily make the defense more difficult, but it does make it more important. Perhaps not the ideal situation for a player who is still a work in progress defensively.
  20. Dombrowski said today that the team would like to give him more time at AAA, that but there is a need and he is ready. Well, that statement sounds kind of contradictory. At the very least, it sounds like they are bringing him up before they wanted to. Again, I'm not saying it's a bad move. I'm glad he was called up. But I do think it's a panic move.
  21. We just went through this whole thing, ad nauseum, about how it's a bad idea to sign players over 30 who are fat and in bad shape to bloated contracts. I cannot believe that anyone would consider taking on that contract. Yes, Miggy has been awesome. Next year, he may very well not be.
  22. Thankfully, I don't have to wake up early tomorrow. On a bad note, however, the Mariners announcer, namely Dave Sims, is one of the most annoying ever. He makes every good play on the Mariners side, offensive or defensive, sound like the game wining hit or catch of Game 7 of the World Series.
  23. This FO has a pattern of making 'panic moves'. They have admitted to it, though they call it a 'sense of urgency'.
  24. To a certain extent, yes. I think they feel he's close, but I also think they would have preferred to give him more time in the minors. At any rate, I'm all in with Devers. Let the offensive explosion begin!
