Farrell is the captain of the ship, so if the coaches aren't doing their jobs, I agree that is ultimately on Farrell. I don't believe that Farrell lacks an understanding of the rules. I think he simply had a brain cramp or two during some games. It happens. It doesn't excuse the mishaps, but it happens. As far as the line up construction goes, there is not a manager in baseball that truly optimizes his lineup. This is why I said that Farrell is really no worse (or better) than most of the other managers. I've also said before that I really liked Farrell in the role as pitching coach. That said, I disagree that he is clueless in other areas of the game.

Also take into consideration that the Rockies' pitching in 2007 is nowhere near as good as Cleveland's.

Agreed. The Guardians will be tough to beat because they are a good team, as is evident by their crazy +207 run differential. Their Pythagorean W-L record has them at 93 wins, 6 games better than their actual record. That said, anything can happen in a short series. The Red Sox are the last team to beat the Guardians, after all.

I get that oldtimer. I agree that there are some definite boneheaded plays, like forgetting how many outs there are and like Hanley trying to advance to 3rd on a groundball hit in front of him. I am not arguing about those. The ones that I take issue with are the ones that are judgment calls but are being called stupid. If the runner is out, then it's easy to say that trying to advance was stupid. OTOH, if the runner is safe, it would be called smart baserunning. It could be the exact same baserunning play that gets classified two different ways depending on whether the runner is out or safe. To me it just seems like pretty much every time the Sox make an out on the bases, someone is calling it another stupid out. That is usually not the case.

That is the kind of deal that I'm talking about. Anyone can overpay for a player through free agency or in a trade. Find me that diamond in the rough.

Of course we don't know what the team will look like in 3 years. A lot can happen between now and then. As things happen, I will update my opinion, much like the weather forecasters update their predictions. At the moment, the cliff is there. -
Yes, I think it is fair to wonder what is going on with the coaching staff in terms of all of the underperformances. I have questioned before what Chili Davis is doing.

Well, it's difficult to say anything negative in hindsight. It turns out that Dombrowski was 100% correct in trading for Sale. I still don't like the magnitude of prospects that Dombrowski has traded away, which includes the Sale trade. Oddly enough, I liked the Smith and Thornburg trades.

Aggressive baserunning led to our only run scored today, and also led to what should have been our 2nd run scored, were it not for the bonehead replay crew.

Bogus call by the replay crew. The Rays fielders returned to the field because they knew Vazquez was safe. That's how obvious it was.

Thank you. Porcello was not great today, but he was not the problem either. Lack of offense was.

Pablo being the #1 worst contract is fair. I think that we have to wait on Hanley, Price, and Porcello to know how good or bad those contracts will eventually be, but I'm guessing you're just talking about for this year?

I really don't have a problem with any of Farrell's in game managing decisions, including his line ups. That's not to say that I agree with everything that he does, but IMO, he is really no worse (or no better) than most of the other managers in the game. I do agree that there is just cause to criticize or at least question Farrell for the seemingly lack of fundamentals, blunders, underperformances, etc.

I'm not sure that there are that many of them that made our odds of winning go from a plus to a minus. I'm guessing that in many (most), we were already expected to lose before the blunder.

I do not agree with the sentiment either. Even with a player like Pablo, I don't believe for a minute that he didn't care or that he lacked the desire to play well, just because his contract was guaranteed.

No, there is no coasting until the division is clinched. 'Coasting' is what leads to losing the division by one game.

It's actually not that difficult to quantify. Accepting the way that these things are quantified is what's difficult.
