  1. The Lackey trade certainly did not work out, but IMO, Ben was tasked with the job of trying to keep the team competitive while rebuilding. Hence, getting back major league ready talent was a priority in that deal.
  2. GMs should be thinking about the long term as well as the short term. If they're not, then they're not doing their job correctly. Any move made today should be made with an eye on how that will affect the team 3-4-5 years down the road.
  3. What is the purpose, the point, or the benefit of projecting anything regarding the Red Sox then? We can't control any of it. It's just discussion and debate. It's what we do here.
  4. There is no need for you to defend yourself Moon. Defend your baseball positions, which you do very well. There's no need to defend the other garbage.
  5. I agree that the cliff is self-determined, just at creating the cliff was self-determined. As of now, it exists. We will see if it still exists in 2-3 years.
  6. I hope they don't trade Bradley, period. I think it was you who posted earlier that you hope they don't break up our OF. I tend to agree with that.
  7. I don't either. Hence, the looming cliff.
  8. My hope is that Hanley will be able to play most of the games at 1B, which will allow JD to mostly DH. I think JD could take some reps at 1B and be decent there. He could also get some playing time in the OF to give the regular OFs a rest. I'm not real thrilled about either Hosmer or Moustakas because I think their contracts will be worse than JD's in terms of value per dollar, not to mention the QO.
  9. Ben (or Theo) never had complete autonomy. That was part of the problem. Look at what Theo was able to do once he was given that autonomy with the Cubs.
  10. Oldtimer, I am far from being a negative poster. My take is almost always positive, so much so that I am often called a homer, a pollyanna, or told to take of my rose colored glasses. I absolutely love the Cora signing, and have had no issues with any of the other coaches that have been signed. I don't think that LaRussa will be the downfall of this team. I just don't see the necessity of signing him, and think Dombrowski would have been better off hiring a VP that could offer him some opposing viewpoints.
  11. I would think the attraction of Boston being a contender would be enough to get Stanton to waive his no trade clause. However, I also think that if he has the opportunity to go to the Dodgers or Giants instead, he would choose them over the Sox. IMO, it's a moot point though.
  12. I hope they are trying to rebuild their farm.
  13. Agreed. Devers should not be moved yet just because he did not look that great defensively in his first season. He is still very young and could improve with the proper coaching. However, I would have no problem moving him to 1B for a significant upgrade at 3B, like Machado, not that I want Machado on my team.
  14. Because I never miss the opportunity to put a plug in for advanced stats, this is why we need analytics!
  15. I don't think that we have 'too many holes' to fill. Again, I think our team looks pretty good as is. I am surprised that no one seems to be concerned with the potential health of our starting rotation. If our rotation is healthy, they should be one of the top rotations in baseball. If ERod does not bounce back from his surgery as quickly or as strongly as expected, and/or if Price has significant elbow issues again, then that paints a whole different light on our rotation. After this past season, I do not have a lot of confidence in Price making it through next season without spending a lot of time on the DL. I would look for a #2/3 type pitcher on a relatively short contract (easier said than done, I know), and sign JD Martinez, and call it a day outside of tweaks to the pen and the bench. In both cases of the pitcher and JD, I would offer more money per year to get fewer years. Honestly, if Dombrowski did nothing this offseason, I would expect the Sox to be back in the playoffs.
  16. Part of the difficulty in Ben's 'rebuilding' plan is that he could not go into full blown rebuild mode. He had to try to keep the team competitive while waiting for the plan to pan out. Porcello and Castillo were part of the 5 year plan, players that would be strong contributors beginning in 2016. Porcello worked out like Ben expected in 2016, not so much this year. Castillo has been a complete flop to date. Hanley was not part of the 'plan', per se, but was rather a player signed to keep the team competitive in 2015, with hopes that he could become the DH once Papi left. Pablo was not Ben's choice.
  17. IMO, LaRussa and Dombrowski are too like minded. Dombrowski would be better served by hiring someone who could give him an alternate viewpoint.
  18. Oh, don't get me wrong. In no way do I think LaRussa will take over the managing job if Cora falls flat on his face, which I also in no way think will happen. But I do think that LaRussa was hired in large part to advise Cora. If Dombrowski likes what he sees in Cora's managing and the team is playing well, that advice from LaRussa will be just that, advice that Cora can use as he deems necessary. If Dombrowski does not like what he sees in Cora's managing, then the advice will become more like a directive.
  19. On the surface, speaking out against the Pablo signing (I think Ben was on board with Hanley) sounds like a smart idea, but you know it's not. Privately, absolutely. And for all we know, he did speak out against it privately. Publicly speaking out against it would not provide good optics, whether he did it before the signing, after the signing, or even after he left. I tend to agree with you about Ben's support of the Lester negotiations. Well not necessarily the lowball offer, but about not necessarily wanting him back at the cost he was going to command. That was a huge mistake.
  20. I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. The main thing I disagree with is that Cherington wanted to play the small market strategy. It just wasn't time yet. Had he been allowed to see his plan through, I am confident that he would have been aggressive in 2016. Not as aggressive as Dombrowski, but he would have traded away some of his prospects and made other moves to get the team back into the playoffs. Dombrowski is too aggressive for my taste.
  21. A bird in the hand...
  22. No, you're correct. I did say that this is still largely a Theo/Ben team. I give Ben some of the credit for Theo's acquisitions because Ben was Theo's right hand man. Also, Ben (and Theo) get some credit for any players that Dombrowski acquired by trading away their prospects.
  23. I don't think he will be either, but I do think he was brought in mostly as a 'safety net' for Cora over anything else. That doesn't send a very good message to Cora.
