Not in terms of innings pitched per start, which is what sk was talking about. Pomeranz averaged 5.4 innings per start. In comparison, Sale averaged 6.7, Porcello 6.2, Price 6.0, Rodriguez 5.7, and Fister 5.6. Pomeranz was the lowest out of our regular starters. Kershaw averaged 6.5 and Strasburg averaged 6.3.

My opinion has been, and still is, that I'd rather stay pretty much status quo offensively and instead focus on obtaining a #2/3 starter. Unless we know with a good degree of certainty that Price is healthy, we need another solid starter. There are too many question marks with the staff. That being said, Dombrowski will bring in a big bat. I just hope he pays attention to our pitching as well.

Once the Yankees took a 3-2 lead in the series, I really thought they were going to win 1 of the last 2 games. Thank goodness they didn't. I don't think I could have taken it. LOL Smiley-Beni Day is a great day indeed.

You are absolutely right about how much of an accomplishment just making the postseason is. That is the goal - make the postseason, then take your chances. As much as I dislike Dombrowski's style, I do not at all view this season as a failure. Was it disappointing that we didn't advance farther? Sure. But not a failure. That said, with the infamous cliff looming over us, if the Sox don't win a World Series in the next 2, maybe 3 years, and the cliff does indeed materialize, then I would have to consider Dombrowski's tenure a failure, because he sacrificed the long term for the short term.

To date, Dana Levangie is the only coach that is being retained for sure.

He is also interviewing with the Cubs. I would think Maddon has a leg up on us in terms of getting him.

Five years is too many, but it will likely be the price of admission. I'd be inclined to offer him 4 years at more money per year, and see if he bites. No way would I go more than 5 years.

Duquette gets a lot of the credit for 2004, no doubt. He was a good GM in his own right. He's no Theo, though.

Cashman himself stated that he followed Ben's (and Theo's) blueprint the best he could, and that he was very impressed with the job that Ben did. If you recall, he even tried to hire Ben as some type of assistant/consultant right after Ben left the Sox. Seriously, anyone who thinks that Dombrowski magically took this team from the cellar to first place in one year by adding a couple of players is kidding themselves. The division winning team was largely already in place. They would have won the division either way.

Good summary of where we might improve oldtimer. I know I'm in the minority, but I really don't think our team needs as much help this offseason as most people do. Add someone solid at 1B/DH, add a solid starter (depending on Price's health), and tweak the bench and bullpen. I really think we would be competitive next season if we returned the same team.

All that said, I do acknowledge that the team should go with the catcher that gives the team the most overall value. The idea of an all offense, mediocre or poor defensive catcher just does not sit well with me at all.

No, I would not necessarily take Sanchez over Vazquez. I do agree that Sanchez was worth more to his team this year than Vazquez was, but I don't think the gap was as big as it looks. Sanchez caught 110 more innings than Vaz caught, which is some of that difference. Also, Vaz gains nearly a game over Sanchez in pitch framing, once again not accounting for the difference in innings. Give Sanchez and Vaz the same playing time offensively and defensively, throw in the pitch framing stats, and the catchers are closer than their WAR indicates they are. Lastly, none of the stats include 'handling a pitching staff', which I think is the most important part of a catcher's job. IMO, Vaz does a good job in that area. I don't know about Sanchez since I have not watched him enough nor read what pitchers are saying about him. I do know that there was some talk about removing Sanchez from behind the plate because of his defensive issues.

Alex Cora will be our magic potion in 2018. The Yankees built their team the right way. Dombrowski did not. That said, it would not be in Dombrowski's best interest to make rash moves. Our team is pretty good and pretty set for the next couple of years. We can compete with the Yankees with a few moves, none of which needs to involve Stanton.

Cora has been offered a 3 year deal. But I'm guessing that he can't accept it until after the Astros are done playing this season?
