  1. Based off of how much time he spent on the DL this year, it doesn't seem likely. I am more concerned with our rotation than I am with adding a big bat. That said, it's kind of hard to know whether Dombrowski should be focusing on starting pitching or not. Our rotation could end up being tops in the league, or it could end up being very mediocre.
  2. There is no way I would give JD that kind of contract. If you're going to do that, you might as well go the extra step and get Stanton. The Sox will have a lot of competition for Santana, from what I've read.
  3. Now we're talking Nick.
  4. Boras is also asking for the moon, presumably 7yrs/$210M. Yikes!
  5. I get all that, but you're not going to convince me that signing any player to a 10 year deal is not a bad move. And that includes our beloved Mookie. I am just strongly opposed to long term contracts.
  6. Giancarlo's 2017 Clutch stat: -2.03, which is categorized as 'Awful' Career Clutch stat: -7.67 Just sayin'.
  7. WAR is not perfect, but it's pretty comprehensive. It takes into consideration more of these scenarios than traditional stats do, which is why there was a need for advanced stats to begin with.
  8. The only thing about Santana is that he has that darn QO attached to him. During a time that we're trying (hopefully) to replenish the farm, the QO penalties hurt.
  9. Yes we can, and I do hope that we keep our OF intact, regardless of who we acquire.
  10. I think that when I use the word 'overrated', some misinterpret that to mean that I'm saying that they are unimportant or useless. That is not at all what I'm saying. Home runs, like stolen bases are important, and have their place in baseball. But I do think they are overrated, meaning that some fans place more importance or value on them than they warrant. The bottom line in offense is scoring runs. There are other offensive metrics that correlate better with scoring runs than home runs.
  11. Concerning the matter of signing Stanton, Go Cards!
  12. $25M a year is not that bad. $25M a year x 10 years is that bad. If we have to give up any players of significance it becomes beyond atrocious, IMO. You know as well as I do that these types of deals almost never work out.
  13. What fun? I really do not like the Hot Stove. This time of the baseball year drives me crazy.
  14. I think it is. But I'm just against those types of deal. There are very, very few players that I would break the bank for. Stanton is not one of them.
  15. That's how much attention I pay to home runs. As I said about WAR, I would be more on board with trading for Stanton based on OBP than base off of his home runs.
  16. This is a point that seems to be lost on many.
  17. The idea of moving JBJ out of CF and/or Betts out of RF displeases me greatly. I get the idea that if Beni/Betts/Stanton is an overall improvement over Beni/JBJ/Betts, you do it, but I also like to look at that improvement in terms of value. Is the cost difference of acquiring Stanton over keeping JBJ worth whatever overall improvement we will get? Or might those resources be better used elsewhere?
  18. Here's the fabulous thing about WAR. The scenario you described shows up in a player's base running stats, which is part of the calculation of WAR. So yes, it does show.
  19. Yes, Stanton's WAR is for real. I could get more on board with people arguing the case for trading for him based off of his WAR than based off of his 49 home runs. Either way though, my concern with him is not what happens to that WAR in the next 5 years, but what will likely happen to that WAR in the 5 years after that. And we have to give up players to boot.
  20. There was a good point made that Marlins fans would not be happy with the Marlins trading Stanton as a flat salary dump. If the Marlins don't get fan appeasing players/prospects in return, fans will not be happy with Jeter.
  21. I don't know if you're joking or not, but this is a concern for me. Not those exact pieces, but I wouldn't put it past Dombrowski to overpay.
  22. Just taking on the whole contract would be a bad deal. Maybe not in terms of money, but a 10 year deal is insane.
  23. Oh geez. Please, no.
  24. I thought Britton makes some very good points. Good read.
  25. Home runs are sexy. Just like stolen bases. Both are overrated. But no worries to the home run loving crowd. Dombrowski will get us a bit bat.
