  1. I understand your point. I can see both sides to that argument. At any rate, Farrell is gone. It will be interesting to watch Cora's style of managing.
  2. I have always agreed with a manager's philosophy of 'managing the marathon'. If it would serve the team better in the long run to give Sale an extra day of rest in July, then I would give it to him, even if it might cost us that game. I think there are others here who are more in the 'every game counts' camp and that a manager should do whatever it takes to win every game.
  3. I would have pushed some of his starts back this year, but not in the last 2 weeks of the season when it's crunch time. I was actually okay with Farrell choosing to start Fister over Sale to give Sale an extra day of rest earlier in the season. That said, being able to give any pitcher an extra day of rest here and there, or being able to pull a starter from a game early depends a lot on the circumstances of the season to date. If the other starters are typically pitching less than 6 innings per start, that's a lot of work for the bullpen.
  4. It all comes down to the price tag, mainly in terms of years. My first choice is Martinez, but I wouldn't sign him for a 6+ year deal. Santana is actually a better fit for us, but he has a QO attached to him, which IMO, is no small thing. If we do sign Martinez, I hope it's to play 1B/DH, with an occasional start in the OF. I really do not want to break up the OF that we have.
  5. I am not really keen on the idea of Swihart playing second base, but who knows, he might prove me wrong. Either way, if he can get truly healthy, I think he can contribute to our big league club in some capacity. I'm pulling for the guy.
  6. You're probably right.
  7. Don't get me wrong. I think Pedroia would be the guy to do it, but I don't think he owes anybody anything and therefore should do it. If he continues to collect his salary even though he can't play, I would not begrudge him.
  8. Thank you for finding that thread. My point with this is that I think that lessening your best pitcher's innings is sometimes easier said than done. It's hard not to start your ace when you need a win.
  9. I think it makes sense to have Sale pitch fewer innings next year, both by pushing some starts back and by taking him out of the game earlier if the game is well in hand. Being able to do that does require some help from the other starters being able to go deeper into games and from the bullpen being able to keep the lead intact. The FO has been discussing the matter, so I'm sure we will see better management of Sale's innings.
  10. Of course it would be dumb. But there are some players, though few and far between, that have some professional integrity. I'd like to think that Dustin is one of them.
  11. That's a fair point. OTOH, there's also the point of saving the pen arms when possible. I can understand the argument for taking Sale out of that game, but I had no problem with leaving him in the game. He was breezing through that game.
  12. The idea of resting Sale more during the season has merit, but not in the last week of baseball when you are fighting for the division. IMO, that makes no sense. I know for a fact that if Farrell had rested Sale and the Sox ended up losing the division, we'd never hear the end of how stupid Farrell was for not starting his best pitcher. Farrell got crucified for pushing Sale back one start before the west coast trip.
  13. I get the impression that if Pedroia can't play at a level where he's helping the team, he will retire. I think he'll leave the money on the table and retire. That said, I very much believe that he will be back earlier than expected and that he will be a solid player for us.
  14. The predictions for Martinez, Hosmer, and Santana sound reasonable, IMO. Not that I'd give either Martinez or Hosmer a 6 year deal, but they sound reasonable in terms of what teams would be willing to sign those players for. As I said in the other thread, if signing Martinez is going to take more than 5 years, I would prefer Santana for 3 years. I've heard some speculation on Santana getting 5 years, which would be a definite deal breaker for me.
  15. I agree. I would not bet against Pedroia returning sooner than expected.
  16. I was hoping that we'd sign Martinez, but not if it's going to take more than 5 years. Even 5 years is too many, IMO, but I realize the possibility of signing him to a 3 or 4 year deal is slim to none. That being the case, I'm liking the idea of Santana more and more, but only if he can be had for 3 years. Regardless of who we sign, I want there to be enough money left for Dombrowski to make some moves at the trade deadline to fill whatever needs we might have.
  17. I don't necessarily disagree, which is why I think GMs want managers who are going to be open to the FO's suggestions. Yes, there are certainly going to be times when a GM dictates some things to the manager. For instance, a GM might want a certain player to get more playing time, for one reason or another, than a manager wants to give him. But I don't think that GMs really want to interfere with the day to day decisions like line up construction and bullpen usage. Along the same line of what you are saying, and I know you disagree, but I think that's a big reason why LaRussa was hired. Dombrowski gets credit for trying to embrace analytics with the hiring of Cora and the special liaison guy, but he has his old school guy in place as an advisor, 'just in case'.
  18. At the beginning of last offseason, speculation was that Encarnacion would get a much larger deal than that. The same thing may be true this year with regards to Santana and also JD. The market may not be nearly as high as what the rumors and the agents are suggesting.
  19. It's hard to know exactly what the team's needs are. Everyone says we need a power bat, which I can understand, but do we need to go big on that? I think the offense will improve in the power area this season just by our current hitters playing up to expectations. Whether that will be enough is another question. Do we need a replacement for Pedroia or can we use internal options until he returns? Our rotation could be top of the line or it could be mediocre, depending on a lot of factors, mainly health. Because there are a lot of question marks, it might be a good idea not to make that big splash in the offseason, and save our resources for the deadline, when we'll know what the team needs. Once again, I am okay with going mostly status quo on the offense to begin the season.
  20. I don't think any GM wants to dictate to his manager how he needs to manage. However, managers have typically been very old school. Front offices and GMs are becoming more and more new school. IMO, this is creating an increasingly larger disconnect between the manager and the front office. I think GMs are looking for managers who will embrace the analytics that are sent down to them and are willing to go against the traditional grain. In other words, GMs are looking for managers who are on the same page as their front offices.
  21. Well said. Congrats to Kluber. Well deserved.
  22. I was just reading yesterday about how there seems to be a growing trend with teams hiring younger managers who are willing to take more direction from the front office. They want managers who are willing to accept and use the information collected by the analytics people. The Red Sox even created a new position for this, though the title of that position escapes me right now. Three managers who were quite successful (Farrell, Girardi, and Baker) got fired this season. IMO, that's quite a statement.
  23. Yes, I realize that.
  24. Well said oldtimer. I am mostly on board with this post.
