I am wondering how much, if any, of the high asking price and the seeming unwillingness to budge from a that high price has to do with the fact that the Red Sox are the biggest suitor for JD. Dombrowski has a reputation for 'getting his guy', even if it means overpaying to do so. I'm guessing that Boras thinks that Dombrowski will eventually cave, not to the 210 million level, but certainly still to a level where he's overpaying.

IMO, teams should keep as much flexibility as possible. Sometimes that means putting a guy on the big league roster mainly because he is out of options until the team can better gauge exactly what they have in that player. For that reason, I hope that Swihart, Brentz, and Marrero do have an inside track. I don't think that any of them will necessarily outperform some of our other options, but the possibility exists that they might. All that said, I'm pretty sure that Holt will be on the 25 man roster, despite having an option remaining.

I'm sure there are other suitors for JD, but are there other suitors who will cough up $150? Perhaps, but I'm not getting the impression that there is a lot of serious competition for him. From a fan's perspective, it's hard having to wait for your team to make its off season moves. But in the end, I think it will work out to the team's advantage.

I'm pretty sure that is the ultimate goal, once Martinez comes to his senses and is willing to accept a more reasonable offer. That said, Martinez to the Red Sox is not a given. Dombrowski should have back up plans in place, which I'm sure he does.

I think JD ends up in Boston too. I'm just glad Dombrowski is not bidding against himself. As far as I can tell, Boston is the only serious suitor for him.

I wonder if people are aware that different sites have different definitions of what 'holds' and 'blown saves' are. Not that it much matters, those are fairly useless stats to begin with, regardless of their inconsistent definitions.

I agree that he could probably be making a couple of depth moves, but outside of that, I'm pretty sure that everything else hinges on whether JD is signed or not.

And JD is apparently still asking for $200 mil. That price tag is going to have to come way down. I hope Dombrowski waits JD out rather than panicking and giving in to those demands.

I've read that the Os are asking for a couple of top prospects, like Chavis and Groome. For a one year rental, it's not worth it. I'd rather stick with Bogey and hope that his hand is fully healed. When healthy, Bogaerts is a pretty darn good player in his own right. I like what I've been hearing from him this offseason.

It may be my personal bias, but I am very reluctant to give up Beni in a trade. I was not on board with trading Beni for Stanton either. I have no idea where extra pitching is going to come from, but I really don't think Dombrowski plans on adding anything more than depth type pieces in terms of pitching. He is focused on the big bat.

fWAR gives a better indication of how the pitcher performed, while bWAR gives a better indication of what actually happened on the field. In terms of looking forward to the next season, fWAR is a slightly better predictive stat. Personally, I prefer fWAR as well.

There are going to be cases where a player's WAR varies greatly from one site to another, but again, having an understanding of why that happens helps to make sense of it. The discrepancy might create a lot of confusion for some fans, but that is really not a shortcoming of the stat, but rather a shortcoming of the fans who haven't studied the stat enough. That is not meant to be a knock on the fans who don't care about WAR. Not everyone has the interest to dig deeper into advance stats, and that's perfectly fine. However, if that's the case, it's really not right for those people to blow WAR off as somewhat useless because of that discrepancy.

I just don't see the leadership quality that you're talking about with Machado. Maybe because we're on the opposing side of that, but still. I see a 'punk' quality in him, which I don't consider to be leadership. Also, I like your use of the word 'wasteland'.

I'm not talking about just hitting barrels though. I'm talking about barrels that are NOT home runs. For some reason, that stats correlates 2 times better to next season's wOBA than barrels that are home runs.

No, people who played the game are not in the best position to judge recipients of these awards. They are biased and vote largely based on reputation. Would they do a better job than sportswriters? Perhaps. But they would not do a better job than the geeks. Managers have voted on the Gold Gloves for ages, and that award is considered probably the largest joke of all the awards. Managers have gotten it very, very wrong. It is only recently that the Gold Gloves have gained an ounce of respectability, after they added the sabermetric component. The geeks would get it right, as is evidenced by the Fielding Bible Awards.

Fair point. Not that I'm condoning signing Machado as a free agent next year either. I would not do it either way. That's just my personal aversion to those massive contracts.

Interesting article that I read yesterday on 'Barrels', balls that are hit with a certain exit velocity and launch angle. It turns out that balls hit that are Barrels but not homeruns is a very good indicator of the following season's success, as measured by wOBA. Moreland is one of the top 3-4 guys in this category (along with the arch enemy Judge). Good signing Dave!

I am one who thinks we need a top starting pitcher more than we need a big bat, but no way would I trade Beni for Archer based on value. Also, for some reason, I get the impression that Archer is not a player who would fare well in a city like Boston.
