  1. I don't think that the Sox should get into a bidding war with another team. They should already have in mind what they think JD is worth, and not go above that limit. Theo operated that way. I'm not sure that Dombrowski does. At any rate, I hope that Dombrowski has asked Boras to give him a chance to beat any offer given to JD before allowing JD to sign with another team. Not that Dombrowski should necessarily beat said offer, but at least give him that courtesy in case the other offer is not crazy.
  2. My opinion that we currently need another #2 starter is based on the uncertainty of Price's (and ERod's) health. At the time that Sale was acquired, he was not a necessity. He was an expensive luxury. Now it turns out in hindsight that we did need Sale, but Dombrowski didn't know that at the time. The whole point behind giving Price that huge contract was that he was our much needed ace. We didn't need a second ace.
  3. LOL I know there are several posters who feel this way, but I like the characters on the team. I got frustrated with many of them throughout the season, but I like the team. I don't like Machado, but I fully admit that if the Sox traded for or signed him, my opinion is likely to change. My reasons for not wanting to get Machado go beyond my not liking him.
  4. I was not as dead set against Hosmer as you were, per se. I was just dead set against the type of contract I figured he would get. Seven years for him is just crazy. Santana's deal is more reasonable, but even with that, the $20 mil a year is a bit much. Plus, he had that dreaded qualifying offer attached to him. I am perfectly fine with having Moreland back.
  5. At one time, I would have completely agreed with this. However, after seeing Greinke receive a larger contract after opting out, I wouldn't be surprised to see Price do the same if he pitches well this season. Also, if Price is unhappy in Boston, he just might be willing to leave a little money on the table. So maybe he doesn't get quite as much, but he could receive a comparable contract from a team that he would be much happier pitching for. That said, there are two things working heavily against Price opting out: 1. His elbow 2. The new CBA penalties
  6. !!! It's the only way to go! You can then rewind and watch plays over again, which I often do. Also, I can't 'watch' baseball games with a group of friends. I don't want the distraction.
  7. This is what I usually do. It's not the actual length of the game, it's all the frappin commercials. I can typically watch a game in about 2 hours.
  8. Just say NO to Machado. Please.
  9. Thank goodness Dombrowski signed Moreland is all I have to say.
  10. I agree as well, as long as the Sox aren't tempted to re-sign Price for even more money.
  11. Because he overpaid on both counts and because he overdid it.
  12. You could always become a Red Sox fan.
  13. I can agree with that. I still think it's too much, but I understand that it's the likely price of doing business with JD.
  14. Thank you. That's not to say that WAR is perfect. No stat is. But the fact that the calculations are based on different stats does not make it a flawed or bad stat. I can guarantee that if each team employed official scorekeepers from several different sites, those sites would get different results for BA, OPS, and RBIs.
  15. That is the bottom line. Even if you do see two players equally, human bias will affect that judgment. People here have seen enough baseball to know a good player when they see one. I don't think anyone questions that. However, to determine how a good a player is relative to other players, that's nearly impossible to do without the stats.
  16. It was a good depth signing.
  17. I would prefer to increase the $$$ per year rather than increase the number of years. Hopefully Dombrowski won't give in to ridiculous demands.
  18. No, none of the choices is earth shattering, but the thing is, you just never know who might make an impact as a bench player. The more options you can have available, the better off you are. If it's up to me, I'm sending the guys with options to AAA and giving the other guys a legitimate look before possibly DFAing them.
  19. David Schoenfield ‏Verified account @dschoenfield 9m9 minutes ago Now that the Bills made the playoffs, the longest playoff drought in American team sports ... the Mariners.
  20. Swihart would almost definitely be claimed by somebody. He's not clearing waivers.
  21. It's a possibility that Holt starts in AAA, but I get the feeling that the powers that be are really high on Holt. Fair point about his concussion though.
  22. I would be fine with this, especially if JD continues to ask for a monstrous contract.
  23. Well, here's what Fangraphs has to say about how the Yankees look on paper as of January 1. Peter Gammons ‏Verified account @pgammo New Year's, Fangraphs project the Yanks/Red Sox each 91-71 w/+104 RD, in playoffs w/Astros, Guardians, Angels, Dodgers, Cubs, Nats, Cards, D'Backs I realize that the projections mean little in terms of what actually happens on the field, but perhaps the mighty Yankees aren't the overwhelming favorites that some think they are. Or maybe our Sox aren't as bad off as some think they are.
  24. JD is crazy if he's looking for a deal longer than 7 years. Seriously, I would not go more than 5 years, and even that is too long. I really think our offense will be better than it was last year, even with no further offensive moves being made. If JD won't accept 5 years or less, then no thanks, and turn your attention to another top starting pitcher.
  25. I'm sure that Dombrowski is on the phone every day with many teams discussing various trade options. He is not just sitting around idly, waiting for JD to accept his offer. That said, if Dombrowski is truly set on adding JD, there's not a whole lot else that he can do until JD makes a decision. His hands are tied. Attaching a deadline to his offer is a good idea, but then Dombrowski (and fans) have to be willing to accept that JD might decide to play elsewhere. I understand that fans are getting antsy about not having signed a big bat yet. I imagine that JD is also getting antsy. I'm sure he's fully aware of what happened with Encarnacion last year and the contract that he had to 'settle' for. I have to think that JD will sign with a team very soon.
