I think there are enough at bats to go around and keep everyone well rested. Moreland was not supposed to be an everyday player when he was signed. I think he will be okay with a lesser role than what he had last year. JD will become our 4th outfielder along with being our primary DH. Cora will figure it out.

I have been a tough critic of Dombrowski, but I have to agree that he did a very nice job this offseason.

I agree. I think the front load and the 2 opt outs should make JD feel like he got a good deal. He should not feel like he was disrespected in any way regarding his contract.

This was the plan initially when Moreland was signed, then Ramirez' injury kept him from being able to play in the field. If Hanley is healthy, I agree that we could see a lot of production from a 1B platoon.

I am not a fan of long term contracts, but as long term contracts go, this one is bearable for me. You are absolutely right that if JD does not hit, we could have more dead money on our hands. There's definitely that risk, which is why long term contracts should not become the norm. I still prefer the Mitch Moreland type signings, but I'm very happy that we have JD.

As much as I love my stats, I am a big believer in the intangibles that you mention. (Though some people don't want to believe that, for some reason.) That doesn't mean that I'm going to ignore what the stats tell me, but I agree that leadership, mental toughness, etc. make a difference. One of my biggest intangible favorites is still Varitek. I don't care what anyone says about his stats (although the studies support him), I'd take him behind the plate any day of the week.

I very much agree oldtimer. I think that the more aggressive hitting philosophy that Cora is bringing to the team will help a good bit. If nothing else, having a fresh voice sometimes helps. The players being healthy will also help quite a bit.

Thanks. IMO, this is a good deal for both JD and the Sox. It does liven up the rivalry a bit.

Could be, but my opinion is that Dave upped the offer from $100 to $110 (somewhat of a moral victory for JD), and by doing that, along with the front loaded payouts and opt outs, was enough to get the deal done. JD has to feel like pretty good about the deal, even though it falls well short of what he expected.

As far as long term deals go, this one does not make me cringe. Dombrowski got a little creative with the specifics of it.

Excellent point here. A good manager is going to handle these things internally and keep them out of the press. Francona was excellent at doing that, IMO.

Pedroia's point in that article was that what's best for the team is to have several leaders, not just one. He pointed to past teams where several of the guys took on leadership roles. It's not that Pedroia doesn't want to be or isn't a leader, but that he's hoping that some of the younger guys will step up and lead the team along with him.

Obviously, I am thrilled to have JD on our team. However, I really would have liked to see what kind of improvement our offense would have made without him, because I think it would have been fairly significant. Now if our offense improves, the improvement will mostly be credited to the addition of JD. And while that will certainly help, I think a fair part of the improvement would have happened anyway.

I read that there are actually 2 opt outs. One is after 2 years. The contract is front loaded with JD making $50 mil in the first 2 years.

Yes it is. Dombrowski did a good job with that. And I read today that Nunez' preference was always to return to the Red Sox. I know that's what any player is going to say, but it makes me feel better. Also read that the Sox gave Nunez a workout in December, but he didn't pass. Gave him another one in January, he improved but he still didn't pass. So it appears that the 2 sides have been working together on a reunion for a couple of months.

Holt can be a very good value for $2 mil. I am not in any hurry to DFA him.

Dave did good with this deal. He not only got Nunez back for a good price, but he was creative with the AAV. We are right around the point where we can still sign JD and stay under the big tax hit. That $2 mil might be the difference.

Yeah, it's hard to give up a depth player with options over one without. We'll see how badly the Red Sox need that $2 mil.

Exactly. It's not just wishful thinking with these guys. Improvement should be expected.

That's exactly what my point was a a few posts ago. I don't think any of us are expecting career years from these guys, just that they should be better than they were last year. That said, it wouldn't be surprising if one or two of them had breakout years.
