  1. A ten year extension from now would not be nearly as bad. That is only like a 7 year deal, and like you said, through age 35. A ten year deal from when he hits free agency would be crazy. Either way, I don't think there will ever come a day where I will approve of giving a player a 10 year deal. I have a hard time with anything over four, though I understand the necessity to sometimes offer more than that.
  2. I have really liked what Cora has done so far. I was reading today about a bet he made with Devers for every walk he drew and every opposite field HR he hit. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about when it comes to being a good manager.
  3. I am still fine with Hanley's option vesting, if he's hitting. I'm also fine with Cora having some more patience with Hanley to give him a chance to break out of the slump. If Hanley continues not to hit and Moreland continues to hit, then the logical choice would be to give Moreland the at bats. It has nothing to do with Hanley's option vesting or not. It has to do with playing the better player.
  4. We have Jacko to thank for the Sox win, accompanied by the Yankees loss, last night.
  5. Hanley has indeed been frustrating, I can't argue with that. I'm a big Hanley fan, and right now, even I don't understand Cora playing Hanley over Moreland. Moreland is currently better than Hanley in all facets of the game. I completely understand about the game threads. I used to post in game threads (not here) during practically every game, but it got to the point where I just couldn't stomach it anymore.
  6. Snell doesn't stand a chance tonight. Once again, I smell a Red Sox victory. Let's go!
  7. Yes, they did.
  8. It's sounding more and more like Swihart is going to be traded or DFA'd, which to me, is kind of sad.
  9. I found this interesting. It looks like Swihart is the odd man out.
  10. I know that I'm in the minority, but I would not give Mookie a 10 year deal, as much as I love the guy. If that's what it's going to take to keep him, I would sadly have to let him go.
  11. And batting order means so little anyway....
  12. It's actually not that crazy.
  13. I agree with leaving Betts and Beni at one and two, and I'm good with batting Pedroia 6th, at least initially. I could see Pedroia batting 3rd too and moving Hanley to 6th.
  14. Yet I am still opposed to robot umps. And instant replay.
  15. I smell another Red Sox victory. Vazquez goes yard tonight.
  16. Just stay out of the game thread oldtimer. Continue to post in the other threads.
  17. Stupidest rules ever.
  18. It will be interesting to see what the Sox decide, though it does seem like Nunez to the DL is a probably option. I don't understand why the Sox won't give Swihart some more playing time. It doesn't have to be behind the plate. Let him start a few games in LF. Let him start a few games at 2nd. I don't think his defense could be much worse than Nunez'. Cora has found a way to get everyone else in the lineup fairly regularly, so it doesn't make much sense that he can't find a way to get Swihart in the lineup more often.
  19. I shudder to think about it.
  20. In some cases, they probably do. But there are certain pitchers who get more than their share of strikes called because of their reputation. Mariano got something like 20% more strikes called than he should have. I don't think umpires do that intentionally, I think it's mostly due to confirmation bias. Also, umpires are more likely to call a ball a strike on a 3-0 count than they are at other times. With the count now 3-1, how often do hitters who should have received a walk go on to make an out or even get a hit, which affects their and the pitchers' BB stat. At any rate, whether the calls even out or not really shouldn't be a consideration. It doesn't change the amount of subjectivity that goes into those stats.
  21. I agree that we haven't really needed a more flexible bench. That said, it's still kind of pointless (outside of the 'insurance' argument) to have him taking up a spot on the 25 man roster if he's not going to be used.
  22. By the same token, it's possible that we would have won some games that Jackie did not play in if he had been playing.
  23. Ha. Even with the sarcasm, it's the truth. Well almost. That's where you bat your worst hitter out of the top 5. We certainly do not want JD batting 3rd.
