Well, the trick is to determine whether the upgrade in offense outweighs the downgrade in defense, or vice versa. While I personally prefer a stronger defensive alignment, I do acknowledge that if the added offense outweighs the weakened defense, then that's the alignment the team should go with. That said, I think many people underestimate the number of runs that a great defensive player can save over a mediocre or poor defensive player. Oftentimes, the runs saved are very subtle.

Fair point. Interesting to note that JD's UZR/150 in left field is now -16 and in right field it is now -41.6. Jackie's UZR/150 in center is 6.8. This is a lot different than they looked about a month ago. The only point I'm trying to make here is how quickly the numbers can change when you're dealing with small samples.

1. He was called up well before he was ready (out of necessity). He did an admirable job considering, but being thrown into the fire before he was ready messed with his development. 2. In 2016, he was sent down after 6 freaking games. SIX! If that's not bad enough, the Sox then decided he was going to become a left fielder. 3. After healing from his injury, the Sox said they were committed to playing him only as a catcher. How long did that last? Next thing you know, he's going to be tried out at 1B, 3B, 2B, etc. Now maybe he wasn't progressing as quickly as the Sox would have liked him to. I really don't know. But either way, he was not given a fair chance as a catcher.

Interestingly enough, Beni's base running stats are all in the positive, though barely for UBR. I would not have expected that. UBR 0.1 wGDP 0.8 wSB 1.3

IMO, the Sox really screwed up in 2016 when they panicked and sent him down to AAA after just 6 games. And then tried to convert him to a LFer.

I endorse this post. Personally, I think the Sox are well balanced and are not in need of anything right now.

If I were Mengden, I wouldn't be giving away all my secrets about how I plan to attack hitters. Not that the Red Sox play the Athletics again this year, but still. And IMO, that 'stache has to go.

Just for you: Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats 53m53 minutes ago Devers is hitting 150/150/225 with 14 K and 0 BB in his last 11 games as his plate discipline has gone full Sandoval, swinging at 55% of the pitches he sees outside the strike zone. But on a bright note, his defense isn't hurting us as much as some think: Devers ranks 9th/25 third basemen with a league average 0 defensive runs saved (tie w/ Kris Bryant). 8 men have reached because of his errors, 6 have reached because of Beltre errors, 6 for Bregman, 5 for Longora, etc. Devers' range more than makes up for that correctable flaw.

I happen to agree with completely about the importance of JBJ's defense, but I think Sale's nibbling has more to do with Vazquez being behind the plate instead of Leon. If I were Cora, I'd pair Sale up with Leon every time out.

It's not just about how many extra balls JBJ would have gotten to over Beni. The LF defense is also weakened when JBJ sits. Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats 42m42 minutes ago With JBJ sitting the outfield defense is taking major blows. Based on statcast data Martinez ranks 152nd/181 in outs above average while Benny in CF a disaster, he ranks 179th/181 already at a -6. Betts is 6th best. Things get even worse as you add in arms.

Or the other way to look at that is that the Yankees went 17-1 in an 18 game stretch while we scuffled at .500, and we are only 1/2 game back on them. It's all good Max. The Red Sox are fine.

I am all about developing our own talent. But since Dombrowski traded it all away, his task is now to find those hidden gems. And even is we did have a strong farm system, the task is still to find those hidden gems rather than handing out those atrocious contracts that almost always end up handcuffing the team. It's easy to hand out $250 mil to sign a player. Find me that hidden gem.

I am pretty confident that Machado will be traded before the deadline. The Os would be stupid not to get something for him before he walks in free agency. I can't see the Sox going after Machado. We really don't have any use for him.

That's exactly my feeling. The "Hidden Gems", who can be acquired for relatively cheap, are out there. Dombrowski and his crew need to find them.

Rob Bradford 3m Observation: Chris Sale clearly working quicker with Leon than he had with Vazquez If I'm Cora, I'm going to let Sale continue to pitch to Leon. They seem to have a comfort level that Sale and Vaz just don't have yet. Great win! Great series!

I don't expect everyone on the team to play at or above their levels of expectation. But we have a good team. A very good team. If we can get some relatively good fortune in terms of health and performance, we're every bit as good as the Yankees. The way I look at it is this. The Yankees have gone on an absolute tear while we have scuffled at .500 ball, and they still haven't been able to catch us in record or in run differential. Ha!
