  1. Just say no to JD batting 3rd. Please.
  2. No one in the history of baseball has ever said that the eye test, ie scouting, is not valuable.
  3. It's not just the missed calls. Think of all the borderline calls that could go either way. There is a great deal of subjectivity that goes into calling balls and strikes. As far as comparisons of defensive plays, I don't think it's nearly as impossible as you think it is. Actually, with all the technology available these days, it's very possible.
  4. Valid points made here.
  5. I really hate to lose Swihart, but if that's what the plan is, then they really need to cut him loose. Not only is it hurting Swihart, but it's hurting the flexibility of the Sox.
  6. And he can't even do that right.
  7. Yup. If one didn't follow the sport outside of reading some of these threads, they'd be shocked to see how well the Sox are doing.
  8. The thing that's so frustrating with ERod is that far too often, he gets ahead 0-2 on a batter, then the next thing you know, the count is 3-2. Why doesn't he attack the 3rd strike the same way he attacks strike one and strike two?
  9. 1. Mookie Betts ® RF 2. Andrew Benintendi (L) LF 3. Hanley Ramirez ® 1B 4. J.D. Martinez ® DH 5. Xander Bogaerts ® SS 6. Rafael Devers (L) 3B 7. Eduardo Nunez ® 2B 8. Sandy Leon (S) C 9. Jackie Bradley Jr. (L) CF This line up will score some runs. Leon is back to catching Sale. I smell a Red Sox victory!
  10. I am actually surprised Hanley has played as much as he has. I agree that for him in particular, regular rest would be beneficial. It seems that Hanley needs to still be reminded not to swing for the fences every pitch.
  11. After what he did with the Sox last time we signed him, no thanks. He's a nut case.
  12. Speaking of former Sox pitchers, Buchholz had a decent start for the Dbacks on Sunday, 5 IP, one run given up.
  13. That's a possibility.
  14. LOL Bell. You come up with some good ones.
  15. Also, confirmation bias is a powerful thing. The data collectors at BIS have checks and measures in place to eliminate most of the bias.
  16. I think Jackie would probably benefit from some time in AAA, just to clear his head, if nothing else. That said, I'd stick with him a little longer before making that decision.
  17. Of course there are many other factors impacting the game. This is exactly why I don't like to blame any game on a specific player, play, or managerial decision. That said, my point is that having Jackie in the line up has not created a record that's worse than when he's not in the line up.
  18. Probably two of the simplest stats are Ks and BBs, or variations of them like K%, K/BB ratio, etc., for both pitchers and batters. Everyone uses them without much of a second thought, probably because they've been around forever. At the same time, Ks and BBs are probably the most subjective stat there is, far more subjective than defensive metrics. Not only do umpires have different strike zones, but how often do they miss calls? Additionally, it has been proven that umpires have biases.
  19. RBI is a fine stat, as long as it's taken in context.
  20. WAR doesn't give credit for productive outs, but it does give credit for a player's hustle. Obviously, it's not recorded as 'hustle', but if a player is hustling on the bases and avoids an out or takes an extra base, that player will be credited in his base running stats. Likewise for defense.
  21. No one in the history of baseball has ever treated WAR as gospel. I will defend it as a very good and reliable metric, flaws and all, until I'm blue in the face, but I know that it's not the end all be all.
