If a team can get through a whole season being lucky, then good on them. It doesn't matter whether you win because you're good or you win because you're lucky. I'm just saying that wins and losses in one run games are due more to randomness than they are to talent. The 2012 and 2013 Baltimore teams were largely the same. The Os went from 29-9 record (.763) in one run games in 2012 to a 20-31 record (.392) in 2013.

He will probably be very good for several more years, but decline begins in the early 30s. A player in his 30s is past his prime.

I think there is soreness there, but I think it's probably the general type of soreness that most pitchers deal with after a start. That's my guess anyway. Sale could pitch if he needed to, but since the Sox don't need him to pitch right now, they'll let the soreness heal in hopes of him being stronger in October.

I agree that an MRI should have been done right away when Sale was on his first DL stint. I don't know why it wasn't.

Absolutely, hence the word 'eventually'. The point being that winning one run games is not some special skill that any team will be able to sustain.

That is the beauty of JD's contract. Dombrowski gets an A+ for that.

The number of pitches that a batter sees in a plate appearance does show up in the numbers. Productive outs show up in numbers as well. That said, I agree that numbers cannot capture everything. On the point of 'protection', however, the topic has been studied very thoroughly, from probably every angle that you can think of.

LOL I used to watch that routine very closely, trying to figure out exactly what he was doing. Never was quite able to get it.

I do believe that having JD in the line up has given the other guys in the line up some confidence. I do believe that part of the improvement with the other hitters this year is due to JD's leadership and coaching. What I don't believe is that that improvement is due to protection.

As always, some good stuff from Sullivan. Earlier in the season, I posted two facts that didn't go over too well with the masses, but I 100% stick by them as facts. 1. A team's record in one run games will eventually regress to .500. 2. You can tell more about the true talent of a team by looking at its record in blowout games than by looking at its record in one run games. The Mariners are 31-16 in one run games. They are 11-20 in blowout games. FTR, the Mariners' anomaly of a season is the kind of thing that I find extremely interesting and exciting.

1. You are making straw man arguments. 2. You misrepresent what others say. 3. You only read what you want to read. 4. There is a lot of fake news in this post. For these reasons, there really is no point in trying to have a discussion with you about these topics.

"Supposed" being the key word here. The bottom line is that it really just does not make that big of a difference. All of the fretting over whether JD should hit 3rd or 4th is really mostly for naught.

If the Sox fail to win the World Series, it's on Slasher. He probably decreased our chances of winning it all by .02%, or something very close.

JD is a great hitter, but I tell you what, sometimes he looks awful at the plate.

This is one of those random things that occurs in one run wins or losses. The Sox had many more base runners, but just couldn't get the timely hit or bunch those hits together as needed, while the Guardians did. Randomness, not skill. It always hurts to lose games like these, but losing to the Tribe in such fashion is really nothing to be upset about. That game could have gone either way.

At least you're honest about it. I am sure a lot of people feel the same way. For me, it's not about whether he ends up doing well or not. Kopech and all prospects have value before they ever step into a major league game. It's that value that needs to be properly ascertained when making a deal, not the value after the fact.

One of the things that Cora said before the season started that has stuck with me is the importance of explaining the analytics to the players in such a way that they will buy into it. He even hired a guy, whose job title I can't remember, for this specific purpose. Getting pitchers to be 'okay' with looking behind them and seeing some extreme shifts if one of these things.
