    It might be purely coincidental, but then again it might not be. I do think a catcher can have a big effect on a pitcher though.

    Agreed. I am a big believer of the pitcher/catcher relationship intangibles, and the hard to quantify 'game calling' skills. I was concerned with our starting pitcher depth entering the season. Our depth has done just fine, and I agree that much of that credit belongs to Leon and Vaz.

    I am sure we would still be in first place without JD. Maybe with a 5 game lead instead of a 10 game lead. Sure, there are going to be times when the guy in front of JD gets a fastball right down Broadway because JD is due up next. Is the hitter going to hit it any more often than he otherwise would get a hit? On average, nope.

    Absolutely. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think that our team isn't so good because JD joined it, but that JD is so good because he joined our team.

    But WAR does work. What do you mean it doesn't work? The margin of error? Yes, it's flawed. So are strikeouts, as I've mentioned many, times. Being flawed does not mean that it doesn't work.

    This paragraph is almost like the writer is channeling his inner Kimmi: Of course, that ignores the trickle-down effect of adding Martinez. Maybe he provides lineup protection. Maybe he makes the other hitters better merely by his presence. Those are speculative ideas, however. One of the earliest and longest-running sabermetrics issues is the question of lineup protection, but comprehensive study after comprehensive study has failed to prove that such a thing exists. The Red Sox are better at the plate because Martinez is better than the players they had last year at his positions and because Betts is better than Betts.

    I'm not sure who you're talking about in the Giants clubhouse? A lot of the perception of whether a player is a punk or not probably depends on whether the player is on your team or not. I am guessing that if either Machado or Puig had played their careers with the Red Sox, I would not consider them punks. Personal bias, for sure.

    Ha. It's interesting how JD is getting credit for everyone else's home runs.

    He has been mentioned, and he is definitely worthy of the award. My argument was just in terms of who is more deserving between Mookie and JD.

    In the case of batter 'protection', there is strong statistical evidence that batters do not hit any better when they have a strong hitter behind them supposedly protecting them. There is evidence that pitchers may pitch differently to the 'protected' batters, but the batters do not reap any benefits from that. People can talk about line up protection all day, but the numbers just don't bear that out.

    Catching is definitely more grueling than CF. My only point in comparing the two positions is that I prefer strong defense from those positions over strong offense.

    Machado and Puig are both players that strike me as "punkish" type players. The Dodgers would be a difficult team for me to root for. Also interesting to note that the Athletics have closed the division lead to just one game. It's amazing how well they have played and how much ground they have made up.

    I agree with your first two sentences. I also like Moreland/Pearce in the 3 hole, followed by JD, then Bogaerts. We just have a really good line up. You can't really go wrong with it.

    Catcher offense, like JBJ's offense, is never an issue with me as long as the rest of the guys are doing their jobs. I think we've all seen how valuable Sandy and Jackie have been to the team defensively. Any offense they provide is gravy. This is why I always liked Varitek behind the plate, even when he was no longer hitting.
