  1. I like the idea of having a 3rd catcher who can play other positions on the roster. That said, if Cora is not willing to play Swihart more often than he did this past season, it's probably in the team's best interest to go ahead and trade him.
  2. No, I'm the Boston Red Sox, but only with a strong farm system.
  3. I keep saying this, and I keep being told that I'm crazy (not in so many words). Too often it is all about the money, but there are situations where personal and family interests trump money. Especially for guys who already have enough money to live comfortably.
  4. I'd rather go $15M/2 than $20M/3. I think that unless another team beats the Red Sox offer by a significant margin, we have a good chance of getting Pearce back. That's provided that the Sox want him back.
  5. The Sox should bring Hanley back.
  6. I do agree that Devers will eventually move to 1B, I just don't think it will be this season. That said, you make a fair point about Devers' weight. I don't think it's a concern or an issue yet, but it is something for the Red Sox conditioning staff to keep an eye on.
  7. I don't think a DH should be penalized for not playing defense. As long as MLB has the DH role, players who are primarily DHs should be judged solely in that capacity. That goes for HOF voting as well. In terms of offense only, Betts still tops JD, so I'm fine with Betts getting the nod over JD. However, if JD had better offensive numbers than Betts, I would have an issue with anyone not voting for JD simply because he doesn't play defense. Also, I stil don't think it's all about WAR when you're talking about 'Most Valuable'. I think intangibles have to be factored in, which granted, is a difficult thing to do.
  8. I think Fox Sports likes the idea of having Ortiz and ARod as co-analysts. No matter how bad Ortiz might be (and I'm not saying that I agree with you), he's 100 times easier to listen to than ARod is. At least Ortiz is likeable.
  9. No they shouldn't. I am not necessarily opposed to Trout winning the MVP.
  10. Well I always felt like where we went wrong before is with Lucchino sticking his nose into baseball ops, and trying to make a splash for business purposes. Let the baseball ops people take care of the baseball decisions. And yes, I'm all about the farm system.
  11. No we don't have anyone in the pipeline. I'm a bargain shopper. I'm signing the under the radar, 2nd tier types of guys instead of giving an insane contract to the super stars.
  12. Fair enough. I don't really disagree with what you're saying. As I said, I don't think James meant for his tweets to sound as callous as they did. He probably regrets saying what he said.
  13. I don't necessarily disagree with that. I'm not counting on Devers getting hurt because he's playing 3rd base instead of 1st base though.
  14. I am in complete agreement about Lester. The Sox messed up on that one. As far as I remember, Ortiz was never given a long term contract as he got up in age. It's not the dollars I'm concerned about. It's the years. Anything over 4 years and I'm hesitant. That's just me. A player being worth his contract in the past guarantees nothing for the future. Guaranteeing an aging player 7 years because he was worth it in the past is not good business.
  15. I do agree that the Sox see Devers as a huge part of the future. I don't think that they're going to be that quick to give up on Devers at 3rd base.
  16. I get the sentiment. I really do. I do not like the thought of him opting out after next year. I would not be averse to upping his salary for years 3, 4, and 5 if he chose to stay.
  17. There was tons of criticism in the offseason over Dombrowski keeping Holt for $2.2 million, I know that. Kudos to you for calling that one right.
  18. Are we signing Harper? I hope not.
  19. Well this is why we need a farm system. But even without that, I would disagree.
  20. If it were up to me, I'd keep all 3 catchers and give Swihart some more playing time at other positions.
  21. Yikes Moon. Best wishes to you.
  22. If I knew anything about economic theory, I might have a better response for you.
  23. I don't think James expressed himself very well, and I don't think he meant it to come out as callously as it did. Certainly, the players are the game, and certainly, you want to put a good product on the field to keep fan interest. That said, I still think his overall point stands. Take Mookie, for instance. If it's going to take a 10 year deal to re-sign him, I'm letting him walk. He can be replaced. Not necessarily by a single player, but with the money it would take to keep him, the Sox can certainly replace his production. And, I'm guessing that the fans would be just as happy if the team continued to be a playoff contender.
  24. I don't think that we would have necessarily heard anything about it yet. Some of the decision on whether to try JD at first will be determined by what else happens in the offseason, which is still in the very early stages. As far as Devers moving to first, I can see that happening in the future, but I don't see it happening this year. Not with Moreland slated to be back.
  25. I would not give him a contract extension of that length. The best thing about JD's contract was the reasonable of its length, even if JD was just so-so and chose not to opt out. I think it would be a mistake for the Sox to now go back and turn it into a contract that's far too long.
