    "Cheaping out" on the back end of the bullpen is not necessarily the same thing as downgrading the quality. A Kimbrel level closer can be found for a much lesser price.

    This disappoints me. The people that are being cut out probably need the money a lot more than the players do. OTOH, Brian Johnson used his share to pay off his dad's mortgage. Well done.

    The biggest issue is with the players staying on the ballot for 10 years (used to be 15 years). My question is, if a player is not worthy of a HOF vote in year one, why does that change in years 2-10? A player is either HOF worthy or he's not. The passage of a few more years should not change any player's worthiness. Also, how is it that voters are allowed to vote or not vote someone in based on whether they like the person or not? Schilling's percentage actually went down from one year to the next, after he ran his mouth about a bunch of stuff. I understand that people don't like what he has to say, but that should not affect his HOF votes. Changing a vote because of something he said is just plain wrong.

    The post I was responding to was asking where to place Pedroia under the assumption that he would return to hitting like he used to, in which case 3rd is a very logical spot to put him in. That said, when it comes to batting order, OBP is king. Pedroia's .369 OBP would have been one of the best on the team last year, in which case 3rd is still a very logical spot to put him in. As an aside, I really like keeping JBJ in the 9 hole. Also, it bears repeating that batting order doesn't matter that much, so I'll be happy with what Cora decides.

    IMO, we need Eovaldi more than we need Kimbrel. It will be easier to replace a relief pitcher than it will be to replace a starter.

    It would make sense especially if we could trade for someone who has some options remaining.

    So if you let Mookie or whomever walk, who are you going to replace him with? FTR, I am advocating letting Mookie walk as opposed to signing him to a 10 year deal.

    Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. The thing that makes mega deals for players like Mookie possible is having the cost controlled players to complement them. We are not going to be able to afford to keep all of our stars.

    IMO, the entire voting process for the HOF is whack. On a related note, IMO if there has to be a debate about whether a person belongs in the HOF or not, then he shouldn't get in. The HOF should be limited to those players who are no brainers or shoe ins.

    The Sox rarely take part in the Rule 5 draft. If I recall what I read correctly, Josh Rutledge was the last such player.

    He could probably be a starter on many teams. On the Red Sox, he serves the team best in a utility role.

    I am not expecting Pedroia to return to all star form, but I think that he can contribute at a level that is better than the Holt/Nunez duo. That's no knock against Holt or Nunez, I just feel that they serve the team better in utility roles.

    The lack of options in that first group of pitchers creates a roster dilemma for the team, because none of those guys are good/healthy enough to have guaranteed spots. That said, I prefer to keep as many of those guys as realistically possible, even though that might mean that someone a little more deserving of a roster spot starts the year in AAA.

    Why weren't we expected to contend in 2013? IMO, we were.

    I do like his flexibility, though the fact that he has no options remaining kind of hinders his flexibility in another sense.
