That is my problem - I get too attached to the Sox players, especially the home grown ones. But I'm still not paying Mookie a Harper like contract. I'd find a way to bring Varitek and Millar back though.

There is value in making a pitcher throw a lot of pitches. There is more value in getting on base. Getting a starter out of the game early is not as important as it once was.

Correct. Also, the out is the most precious commodity in a baseball game. The ability not to make one is huge, especially for the guy who will get more at bats during the season than anyone else in the line up.

I have to disagree with you. The single most important criteria for a leadoff hitter is to get on base. If he can do so while making the pitcher throw 6 or 7 pitches, then even better. But it is better for the leadoff guy to get on base and only see two pitches than it is for him to see 6 or 7 pitches and not get on base.

Players often choose to be uprooted because they are going after the money. I understand that sometimes it's beyond a player's control. But many free agents could stay with their current team if they were willing to leave some money on the table. These players would still be set for life, many times over.

Every player is concerned with money, but not every player is concerned with getting the most money at the expense of other considerations. I am concerned with getting the most money I can possibly get, but I'm not uprooting my family to do so.

As I've said, he is entitled to go for as much money as he possibly can. I don't like it, but that's his right. I would like nothing more than for Mookie to be a lifelong Red Sox, and I will be happy if the Sox keep him, but if it's up to me, I'm not paying him that kind of money.

Of course the team is doing some evaluation. The performances are meaningless in terms of how they will relate to regular season performances.
