  1. My preference is higher AAV for fewer years.
  2. He might get it, but only because GMs are crazy. It's not what he should get.
  3. Betts, Beni, Bogaerts, and Martinez in the top 5, with Devers in the #3 spot.
  4. I had no problem with Mookie leading off last year. He did very well in that spot. Like you, I see no reason to change it. However, I also trust that Cora knows what he is doing in terms of placing batters where they feel comfortable.
  5. He will be. Book it.
  6. One more year would be 3 years longer than what he should get.
  7. Any time an owner is willing to spend that kind of money on payroll, it's great news for the fans. Henry has always shown his willingness to spend. We, as Red Sox fans, are indeed very lucky.
  8. Sale should get a 3 year extension. I'm fine with the $35 mil per. Four years, IMO, is already a year too long, but I'd do it because he realistically won't be had for 3 years.
  9. I don't think it's just the bombing at such a young age that bothers Red Sox fans. It's that we never got the good years before the bombing. And the bombing was horrendous.
  10. K/BB is a very good and simple stat to use in assessing both hitters and pitchers.
  11. Somebody needs to get JoeyB to post here. I've tried unsuccessfully for years.
  12. There is ample research that suggests that a team's batting order is just not that important. The most egregious error, like batting a pitcher in the cleanup spot, will cost the team 16 runs over the entire season. Switching a batter from #1 to #2, #5 to #6, or something along those lines may amount to a difference of about 2 runs over a full season. It's really not worth fretting about, though that will not stop the endless line up discussions (which I participate in) on baseball forums.
  13. Right, with the underlying tone that Eovaldi would turn into a pumpkin like like Pom did last year. I'm a Harmony fan. But in this case, his post comparing Pom and Eovaldi was really not worth much. He knows that.
  14. 100% agree. That said, I really hope that the Sox don't try to make up for their mistake with Lester by going overboard with Sale. The Sox need to be smart about this.
  15. I hate to say it Moon, but you have gone over the deep end.
  16. Yes, he did. I'm not trying to say that Sale isn't a great pitcher. Just saying that he is not worth $35 mil a year (or more) for a 5+ year contract. That has everything to do with my dislike of huge contracts, especially for 30+ year old pitchers, and nothing to do with my opinion of Sale.
  17. First off, I agree with you 100% that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference who bats where. That's a point I've been trying to make, ad nauseum I'm sure, since forever. That said, while it's true that in those 20 or so extra bats that the lead of hitter gets over the #2 guy, he likely makes the last out far more than he hits a walk off, he is also the guy who is most likely to extend the game to the next batter if he has the highest OBP. I'm not trying to argue whether Mookie should bat 1st or 2nd. It doesn't make much of a difference and I trust Cora's judgment. My main argument here is that in determining the lead off hitter, OBP is king, and speed does not matter much for a lead off hitter.
  18. It's not worth a whole lot Harmony. Don't try to rain on our parade. If he stays healthy, Eovaldi will be a vast improvement over what Pom gave us last year.
  19. I'm also reading that if Pedroia starts the season in extended spring training, the Sox will go with 13 pitchers and only 12 position players. So either way, it doesn't sound like we will be carrying 3 catchers.
  20. He also said afterwards, "I wouldn't have made it out of the first inning if Swihart had been behind the plate". Vazquez is very good behind the plate. I trust him to take over catching for Leon if Leon is traded. Swihart may be very good too, but we just don't know. At this point, I don't trust him to catch a significant number of games. If we trade Leon, and Vaz got injured, and Swihart became our primary catcher, I'd be concerned. The concern may be completely unwarranted, but like I said, we just don't know at this point.
  21. We don't know what 'serious interest' from the Angels and Phillies really means, but it sounds like Eovaldi is another player that wasn't just looking for the most money. That earns some brownie points with me.
  22. Haha. I am braced, though still cringing at the thought. I read this a couple of days ago and commented to SCM that Sale would be here in 2020. I will go on record as saying that the Sox should not extend Sale to a long term contract @ $35 mil a year. It would be a huge mistake, IMO.
  23. More money does not necessarily equate to better. Likewise, going cheap does not necessarily mean being bad.
  24. I don't find either of these things befuddling, in terms of strategy. The 2015 strategy is not one that I prefer, but it should have worked. The 2019 bullpen strategy is one that I am fully on board with, and it should work as well.
