  1. Also: Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 25m25 minutes ago The Red Sox bullpen has 1.6 shutdowns to every meltdown, which ranks 16th, their win probability added is 0.86, which ranks 12th, and a 4.12 FIP, which ranks 10th. Middle of the road. Problem is the Yankees, Astros, Rays, Twins, and Guardians have each been considerably better. I think we were in a very similar situation last year - middle of the pack.
  2. Chris Cotillo‏Verified account @ChrisCotillo 3h3 hours ago I think the preconceived notions people had about the bullpen make nights like tonight look way worse. The Sox could use another arm, though. This plan leans too heavily on Barnes. Like I've said, there's 4 A-team RPs (Barnes, Brasier, Workman, Walden), Hembree in the middle, then B-team: Lakins/Velazquez. If someone he trusts is unavailable, not much depth. ^^Spot on tweet by Cotillo.
  3. Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 35m35 minutes ago When Brasier throws his fastball or slider, and they stay out of the middle of the zone (i.e., fastballs up, sliders down), batters are 3 for 51 against him this year. When they leak to the middle of the zone batters are 9 for 18 with 4 home runs and a double. Location, location, location.
  4. I was actually leaning more towards neither.
  5. Not really.
  6. I would not use Eovaldi as a closer during the regular season unless health reasons dictated he be moved to the pen.
  7. I didn't realize that the season was over!
  8. Yup.
  9. This post deserves an eye roll. Wait for it............................................
  10. I haven't really seen a consensus that your best hitter should be in the #2 spot. I think that kind of took on a life of its own on this forum. My understanding is that you should place your 3 best hitters in the 1, 2 and 4 spots, with better OBP batting higher in the order and better SLG batting 4th. Then the next best hitter should bat 5th, the next best hitter after that should bat 3rd. At any rate, if it comes down to a choice of batting JD 3rd or 4th, he should bat 4th for the reasons stated in my previous post. I don't see it counter-intuitive at all.
  11. Another shout out to Porcello: Lou Merloni‏Verified account @LouMerloni 1h1 hour ago Lou Merloni Retweeted JustWill For the next 3 years, would you rather have Eovaldi or Porcello?. To me, it’s an easy question. I have come full circle on Porcello. I’d take Rick all day. He takes the ball every 5th day. They invested in the wrong guy
  12. Exactly. More power to Henry, I guess, if he wants to keep spending. I won't pretend that I'll be happy about it though.
  13. The way to build a strong franchise is to start with a strong farm, then fill the holes with free agency, not the other way around. Spending big should when needed should be a very occasional thing, not the norm.
  14. Keep the faith people. That is all.
  15. The problem with that is that too often, the 1 and 2 guys don't get on. So here comes your best hitter, batting with 2 outs and nobody on. Wasted potential. Put your best hitter in the 4th spot. He will either come up in the 1st inning with at least one runner on base, or he will lead off the 2nd inning.
  16. It's a waste of potential. But then again, it's more important to put the batters where they feel comfortable. Our 1-5 guys are all pretty good, so Cora really can't lose no matter what he decides to go with. I heard him comment that he was thinking about putting JD in the lead off spot. I, for one, would love to see that, just for the reaction that it would create (LOL), let alone that it would probably be a pretty good move.
  17. Quick check of some numbers: Last year, we scored an average of .60 runs in the first inning, and we scored in the first inning 53 times out of 162 games (32.7%). This year, we have scored an average of .44 runs in the first inning, and we have scored in the first inning 14 times out of 54 games (25.9%). It's probably nothing more than random factors, but I still like Mookie batting leadoff.
  18. I prefer Mookie at lead off as well. It may be my imagination, but it seems to me like the opposing pitcher has had a very easy first inning too many times.
  19. He has even said, as recently as this past offseason, that he would need to reset at some point. Nobody likes paying taxes.
  20. My cliff dwelling has also been based on the notion that an owner would not be willing to spend that kind of money to keep a team at the championship level. You need cost-controlled players, or so I thought. I will be happy from a fan's standpoint if Henry is willing to spend, spend, spend, but I can't condone that philosophy of building a team.
  21. Fernando Rodney or Jenrry Mejia? Tough choice.
  22. He's been pretty darn good. Dude gets no love.
  23. We will likely need to add an arm or two to the pen before at the deadline. I just don't agree that we need to add the big money, superstar closer type.
  24. I also read that Sale had an 'undisclosed toe injury' to begin the season. I have no idea how that affected his velocity, but we now have "Toegate" to consider.
  25. Christopher Smith‏Verified account @SmittyOnMLB 20m20 minutes ago The Red Sox are 20-1 when leading after eight innings. Barnes, Workman, Brasier, Walden and Hembree, the 5 relievers who Cora uses in high-leverage situations, have allowed four runs in 20.1 innings (1.77 ERA), 14 hits and five walks (0.93 WHIP) while striking out 26.
