    I really think that many posters had a preconceived notion that our bullpen would not be good, and due to that preconceived notion, the meltdowns are sticking out far more than the shutdowns. This is understandable, because meltdowns are so much more glaring and so heartbreaking, that they tend to be more memorable. The pen has not been as bad as some posters make it out to be. IMO, the pen has been about the same as last year's pen. Our bullpen needs some help, as do most bullpens as the season wears on. If Dombrowski adds one or two solid depth arms, the pen should be good to go. It's more important that we get Eovaldi right.

    Bradford had a really nice article on Porcello this morning, including talking about how badly Porcello wants to stay in Boston, his willingness to take a discount, and his value as a clubhouse leader.     As much as I love Porcello, I would not give him a huge contract in terms of years. I would love to have him back on a 3 year deal. I would be willing to offer him a slightly higher AAV to keep the the number of years down.

    As I've said many times, Porcello is one of the most underrated starting pitchers because he doesn't have the shiny ERA. The fact that he takes the ball every 5th day and keeps his team in most games while usually going 6+ innings is no small feat.     If I'm not mistaken, you are a big fan of pitcher's duels, like I am. That game was a beauty to watch. That said, these types of games are emotionally draining. Fun, but draining!

    I like when they get the honor of being selected as well, but I'd just as soon none of them played in the game and took the time to rest instead.

    Although I don't think that spending boatloads of money on free agents year in and year out is the way to build a strong franchise, unless the owner wants to eat a lot of money, which Henry has shown the willingness to do. But there comes a point when the spending has to be limited. We're feeling that this year and we will feel it over the next couple of years.

    X/0 does not equal infinity, but I understood where Bell was coming from. When X is divided by numbers getting increasingly and infinitely closer to zero, the quotient approaches infinity. (Unless the numerator is also approaching 0, in which case you have the indeterminate form of 0/0.) But as I mentioned, we are now getting into a completely different concept of mathematical limits. It's how I can prove that .9 repeating is equal to 1. I will now stop mesmerizing the masses with math, since as of today, I am officially on summer vacation.

    My point is that until the stat geeks started doing their thing, everyone assumed that the way the managers were managing was correct because that's the way that it's always been done. No one ever questioned it. No one ever actually 'checked' through any kind of statistical analysis. So how do they know what was right or wrong? The analytics guys questioned these things and started looking for answers. They found many that contradict conventional wisdom. Studies might show that over the next 10 years, the best hitter should hit in the #3 spot, due to Launch Ball or some other reason. Then again, they might come to the same conclusion as those found in The Book. But at least they will continue to search for answers.

    My optimism has not wavered. I am extremely frustrated with the way the team is playing, but I am confident that they will bust out of it and start firing on all cylinders. Then again, I kept waiting for that to happen in 2014 too.

    You think zero is weird, you should look into the wackiness of infinity.

    When the pen blows a game, the loss is so glaring and heart wrenching that I think it stands out more than any other type of loss. Our pen needs some help. However, the pen is reason #3 behind starting pitching and inconsistent offense as to why we are a roughly .500 team.
