  1. I really hope that JBJ is our starting CFer next year. I also hope that Porcello is in our rotation.
  2. lol
  3. Just say no to a 8+ year contract to Betts. I don't care how good he is.
  4. I do not believe this about Sale.
  5. I happen to disagree with this. I don't like the number of years, but I fully understand extending Sale when he did.
  6. FTR, I was not on board with the Sale trade at the time that it happened. I was thrilled to get Sale of course, but opposed to the 'act of destruction' to our farm. I thought it was overkill.
  7. Post of the day!
  8. The farm was decimated either way. When a farm goes from top 3 to bottom 3 in a matter of 2 years, that is decimation. That's what I'm basing my opinion on.
  9. We will be contenders in 2020. Book it.
  10. My point is that one should never pay that much for a relief pitcher.
  11. I think Henry will keep the team competitive in 2020, one way or another. It may mean not being able to reset the tax penalty until next year.
  12. I do not disagree.
  13. I'm a fan of analytics and I think teams should absolutely use the data provided by the analytics guys to help them gain any advantage that they can. That said, a team cannot live by analytics alone. There has to be a balance. It's one thing to have a game plan based on what the analytics tell you to do, but it's just as important to be able to adjust the game plan on the spot according to way things are playing out. Things might need to be changed up because of the opposing hitters' approach, because of what pitches are working or not working for the pitcher, or several other things.
  14. I'm sure some of them will contribute next season. We'll have to wait and see exactly what the plan is.
  15. For me, the crapshoot is the exact reason why a GM should not go overboard.
  16. The farm was destroyed Bell. Regardless of why it was destroyed or regardless of the ring that followed, the farm was destroyed.
  17. Decimated, no doubt. I am with you 100% on this, and have been since Day 1 of the Dombrowski era.
  18. Interesting piece from Speier today about the philosophical differences between LeVangie and the rest of the team. LeVangie pushed for a more traditional approach for his pitchers, rather than going with the analytics. This is supposedly the reason that he was re-assigned. Whoever the new pitching coach is, he will be somebody who embraces analytics.
  19. I am not a fan of either bullpen games or the opener. There is so much beauty in watching a starting pitcher mow down an offense for 7+ innings. Pedro Martinez. Nuff said.
  20. If we kept everyone but JBJ, I think our chances of making the playoffs next year are very good. If that allows us to reset, even better. That will allow Henry the luxury of spending more next year, without the higher penalties, while giving us another year to improve the farm. Yes, it will take longer to rebuild the farm that way, but with smarter, 2nd tier type contracts, the team can rebuild without necessarily being doomed to mediocrity. Obviously, the farm would be replenished much quicker if we dealt away some of our players this offseason.
  21. Best acquisition in what regard? Best value? No way. I get what you're trying to say about his contract, but you cannot look at that contract in a vacuum.
  22. Who's talking about pending mediocrity? Jacko?
  23. The bottom line for me is that I want a GM who is going to consider the long term goals while winning in the short term. It can be done. Maybe we don't win a ring in 2018. OTOH, we might have won 2 rings in the past 3 years with some different moves.
  24. Well said. I have never been a fan of big contracts. I have always preferred the home grown players and Steve Pearce deadline acquisitions over signing superstar free agents. Just because we have the money doesn't mean we have to spend it. Farm system, farm system, farm system. Then fill the holes with small market free agent deals. Big contracts should be the exception to the rule.
