  1. I initially thought that having a runner on 2B to start extra innings was the dumbest idea I'd ever heard. After seeing it in play this season, I don't totally hate it.
  2. Of course no one wants to have their DH pulled in the 5th inning. There would be a whole new level of strategizing to consider, as well as a shift in team building philosophy. As I said, I'm not sure if it's a great idea, but I'm not also not saying it's a horrible idea.
  3. What efforts is the PGA making to increase the popularity of the sport with younger fans? Do any of those efforts involve pace of play?
  4. That's an interesting take on it. I would think being action packed would be a reason more people would watch rather than a reason why they don't.
  5. I'm not sure yet if I think it's a great idea or not, but I'm certainly intrigued by it. I'd have to think through what the ramifications would be. I do think that this would put more emphasis back on the starting pitcher, and I do like that.
  6. Buster Olney @buster_ESPN 4m RT @jorgecastillo: Bud Black brought up an interesting take on the DH that he said is being discussed: Having the DH eliminated once the starting pitcher is pulled. As he pointed out, that would discourage the use of openers. It also would allow for the traditional NL strategy late in games. Interesting idea, for sure. As stated, here's one way to discourage the use of the dreaded opener.
  7. My brother swears that hockey is the most action packed and face paced sport ever. I have never been able to get into it.
  8. I don't consider you 'most fans'. Anyone who is on a baseball forum regularly knows more about the impact than most fans do.
  9. Yes, WE know that because we are baseball geeks. I don't think most fans are thinking that analytics are ruining the game because they don't follow analytics closely enough to know the impact, even with announcers bringing these points up.
  10. Does golf have a large following of younger fans? It might also have something to do with golf being an individual rather than a team sport.
  11. Bingo. In these times of constant action video games and instant gratification brought on by the internet, most people don't have the patience nor the attention span to watch a baseball game.
  12. I am thinking that the average fan really has no idea of the analytics that goes on behind the scenes. If they are starting to lose interest in the game, I really don't think it's due to analytics.
  13. I was just reading a Fangraphs article that stated that the rise in Ks is not due to batter philosophy, but simply due to overall better pitching and to an increase in the strike zone by about 10%. Also, the increase in homeruns has a lot to do with a change in the drag of the baseball, though the article did acknowledge a change in hitter philosophy there. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/two-easy-ways-to-make-baseball-a-better-game/
  14. I'm on board with that.
  15. Yeah, my top priority is pitching as well. I just like Moreland. I like the veteran presence that he provides. I get what you're saying though.
  16. I am willing to wait also, as opposed to making stupid moves this year to try to contend. That said, I think we can contend this year without making the splashy move, and continue to strengthen our farm at the same time.
  17. $3M is chump change and definitely worth the upside. That's money that is easy to eat if he doesn't work out. Also, we have him for 3 more years if he does work out.
  18. If Mitch comes back, then yes, at least to start the season. Unless he can play another position.
  19. I'm not sure there's a set rule on how often the exception is. That would depend on a lot of factors. The more cost-controlled players a team has, the more flexibility it has to take on those longer contracts. I am not necessarily opposed to having more than one longer term contract on the books at one time, as long as the team maintains financial flexibility and does not become handcuffed.
  20. Agreed. I am still hoping we re-sign JBJ or a similar type CFer.
  21. It makes sense that if solid starting pitching is not available, the focus would turn to strengthening the pen. That said, I am not a fan of the general demise of the starting pitcher or of the over-reliance on bullpens. So, while that strategy makes sense, it is definitely not my preference.
  22. We don't agree on very much in terms of baseball, but you do crack me up. That's a good thing.
