  1. Alex Cora was not a great player by any means, but by most accounts, he was a smart player. Most people feel that he is a great manager. John Farrell was not a great pitcher. Most people feel that he was a great pitching coach. As far as I know, all players were very receptive to these two. I'm sure there are many other similar situations. I think it's very possible to be a great coach without having actually played the game. I can only hope that young players will be open and receptive to Bianca.
  2. What a mess. Nobody knows when the season will start or how many games will be played. It's hard for anyone to do business when there are so many unknowns. I am betting that Bauer and Springer will be disappointed with their best offers.
  3. It might be in the best interest of JBJ and most other free agents to take a decent one year deal and wait until next offseason to try their luck at a longer deal.
  4. Fangraphs also currently has the Yankees ranked at #3.
  5. fWAR uses FIP whereas bWAR uses RA9 (actual runs allowed). The main difference is that fWAR gives a better indication of how a pitcher is likely to pitch the following year based on his true talent, and bWAR gives a better indication of how the team fared on the field when that pitcher pitched. bWAR matches up better with team WAR. fWAR is a much better predictor. In fact, K/BB is a better predictor of a pitcher's future performance than bWAR is.
  6. From what I've read, the mechanics of hitting are very much alike in softball and baseball. One person who has coached both major league hitters and pro softball hitters states that 99% of the mechanics are the same. Regardless, if a person watches batters closely and often enough, studies all the video tape available, and gets trained/mentored by other baseball hitting coaches, that person can most definitely learn how to be a great hitting coach. Yes, it might be a hard sell to baseball players to be coached by someone who hasn't played baseball. But that is because of their own biases, not because of anything factual in their beliefs.
  7. You would have to ask other posters what they mean by 'played the game'. I am simply quoting them. Personally, I think that Bianca could be a very good coach despite the fact that she never played Major League Baseball. I think that there are a lot of people who disagree with that opinion.
  8. Congrats to Bianca. I hope that she is welcomed and respected by all. I know that there are posters here who believe that a woman who has never 'played the game' could not possibly teach them anything about hitting, or baseball in general. Thankfully for her, the younger generation seems to be more receptive to changes like these than some of the older generation. Also, kudos to the San Antonio Spurs who had a woman coach part of a game a few nights ago.
  9. Yes, I read that as well. Where he settles might depend on how the scenarios for spring training and the season unfold over that upcoming weeks.
  10. Tanaka has reportedly given the impression that if he doesn't re-sign with the Yankees, he is signing with his former team in Japan. He does not want to play for a team that isn't a contender. Even though I think we will contend, I don't think there's much of a chance he would sign with the Sox.
  11. As much as I love Lester, I'd take Porcello.
  12. A rotation's good W-L record could be more a result of a potent offense rather than good pitching.
  13. We may or may not land him, but that doesn't mean that Bloom is not aggressively pursuing these guys.
  14. He has already gone on a tirade against Tampa Bay's methodology after they traded Snell. LOL
  15. Strange offseason, to say the least. It will be interesting to see if Bauer or Springer end up getting close to what they are asking for.
  16. To emphasize again the point made several times by many: Jon Heyman @jonheyman Market moving at an alltime slow pace. Heading into the new year, of the 301 Free agents with MLB pedigree (via espn) only 31 have an MLB deal (12 more have a minors deal). That leaves 86 percent unsigned. Chris Hatfield @spchrishatfield · For everyone freaking out about "WHY ISN'T CHAIM BLOOM DOING ANYTHING?????"... it's because nobody is. You may freak out when there's nobody left or something, but for now, patience, friends.
  17. Fair on both counts. As Moon said yesterday, I hope we are all still posting at the end of Mookie's contract.
  18. OK, that makes sense. So Mookie would have been better off taking the Sox offer?
  19. Agreed that the differences might not be very large. Shaving one year off of a 12 year contract like Mookie's wouldn't matter much anyway. But I do think that a 4 year contract versus a 5 year contract at a slightly higher AAV is worth it.
  20. The same could be said about the splash type moves that Dombrowski made too. If we didn't the ring in 2018, things would look pretty bad. The same with the Dodgers signing of Mookie.
  21. Speaking of accountants, I do not understand your second sentence at all. LOL
  22. I don't think it would happen where there is a difference of 3 years offered. I'm thinking more along the lines of offering a 4 year contract as opposed to a 5 year contract.
  23. I'm not sure if the deals are ever reported as such, but yes, I do think happens. Porcello's extension with us comes to minds. Most people felt that his AAV was a little higher than it should have been, but that he could have received a lengthier deal had he gone to FA.
  24. Fangraphs' WAR projections currently have the Sox as #13 in projected team WAR overall, but #9 in the AL and #3 in our division, behind the Yankees and the Jays. They have the Rays ranked right below us. Currently, this leaves us in a very difficult spot to even claim a wildcard. As you stated though, the offseason is far from over. I honestly believe that we will make the playoffs this year, albeit through the wildcard.
  25. LOL Yankees fans...
