  1. 100%
  2. I really like this move if Renfroe is expected to be a 4th OFer/platoon/depth player. If the Sox are planning to have an everyday OF of Beni, Verdugo, and Renfroe, I like the move less. There are too many question marks with that as an everyday alignment.
  3. I can agree with your list, though I might put CF behind all pitching needs, especially with the signing of Renfroe. That said, when I say that a closer is a high priority, I do not in any way mean to spend big on one. I remain very much against using a lot of resources on relief pitchers.
  4. I don't really disagree about the possible need for an occasional big splurge. That type of deal really should be the exception, however, and not the norm.
  5. Very sound reasoning in this post, Oldtimer.
  6. Who said anything about jabronis? Just because a player is not a superstar doesn't mean he's a jabroni.
  7. I can't speak for why the Rays have no fans, but in a rabid baseball city like Boston, if the team is winning, the fans will be there. Yes, it might be harder to win without a player like Mookie, but not impossible. Look no further than the same Rays.
  8. I do not think that making a big splash is the right way to go. We don't need shiny new toys. We need good value, quality players.
  9. I would not be surprised if we went with an internal option at 2B. Then again, I would not be surprised if we signed someone to fill the hole. I personally think that our offense will be fine. Pitching, pitching, and more pitching.
  10. My preference is to overpay in money and give fewer years.
  11. I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying. I guess my question is whether we could have won those rings without those specific players. Could another, less expensive player have filled the gap? Maybe, maybe not. I understand the necessity signing free agents. I even understand the need to sometimes sign a player to a long term contract. Four year contracts, maybe even five, I'm usually fine with. I was fine with JD's contract. Even though it's sometimes unavoidable, my very strong preference is to not go longer than that.
  12. I like all of those deals because they were all short term. I agree about Victorino's deal being a year too long, but as you implied, if a 2 or 3 year deal doesn't work out, a team can eat that contract a lot easier than it can eat a 7 year contract. I really liked the Dempster deal. Maybe he didn't pitch as well as we would have liked, but he made most of his starts and kept the team in the game most of the time. Additionally, he is reported to have been a great leader team leader. That's a deal I'd do all over again in a heartbeat.
  13. Superstars will typically sell tickets. This is a problem that we had with Lucchino. He wanted those shiny new toys that would put fans in the seats. While superstars may or may not translate to winning, the philosophy of signing players to draw fan interest is not a very good practice, IMO.
  14. Winning generates interest. It the team is winning, fans will watch whether the team has any superstars on it or not.
  15. DJ is going to cost too much. I would just as soon go with an in house option. Pitching needs to be the focus.
  16. I don't think any of us were happy about the way things went down with Lester. But once negotiations came to a halt, trading him was the right thing to do, like trading Mookie was the right thing to do. Victorino, Gomes, and Napoli are the exact types of deals I'm looking for this season. Mitch Moreland comes to mind.
  17. Yeah, that's a bit surprising. I'm with you on Schilling - he deserves to be in.
  18. Christopher Smith @smittyonmlb · 15m Tomoyuki Sugano, who the Red Sox reportedly have interest in, has averaged 1.8 walks per nine innings in 1,362 innings in Japan. That's called good control. JoeB's favorite stat - K/BB ratio. It's usually a pretty good indicator.
  19. I did not consider us to be playing it half way back in 2012 and 2013. We were making short term moves to stay competitive while giving the youngsters time to get ready. All part of the 5 year plan. IMO, we are in a somewhat similar situation now. We can make moves to be competitive in 2021, but we're not at the point where we're ready to make any big moves. The goal is to make the right short term moves to remain competitive while rebuilding for long term sustained success. Not necessarily an easy task, but doable.
  20. I was just hoping that they'd avoid the sweep.
  21. The same would be true about W-L records of teams in randomly chosen 60 game samples.
  22. Yes, I know that you are usually one of the more optimistic posters here. It's interesting that you were not optimistic in 2 of the years that we won championships. 2004 was a big factor in teaching me to never give up hope. I counted the Sox out probably after Game 2 of the ALCS, most definitely after Game 3.
  23. As we all know, 2020 has been a difficult year, not only with the Sox, but just in general. I understand why it is difficult for some people to remain optimistic. I consider myself an optimistic realist (or a realistic optimist). I am fully aware of the reality of things. Having a positive outlook and hoping for the best does are not mutually exclusive with being a realist.
  24. The thing about being optimistic is that you're sometimes, even often, disappointed. I'm okay with that.
