  1. Well played, Bell.
  2. He's another one that, IMO, we just leave alone and let him do his thing. He's fine hitting in the #9 hole.
  3. And for someone so young, he does not seem to get rattled.
  4. I 100% agree with this in terms of the off field aspects of the game. The intangibles, if you will. In terms of in game decisions, it is my opinion that managers don't make that much of a difference. I strongly feel that the biggest difference maker between last year and this year is Cora.
  5. But opens up a big hole at 3B.
  6. I really think that coming from the Rays organization, where the budget is very limited, is a good thing for Bloom and for the Red Sox. I'm not saying that the Sox should never sign a big contract again, but just because we're a big market team, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be making these small market moves. Sometimes, they work out the best. Things may change, but how good does the Hunter Renfroe signing look right now?
  7. Richards made some progress last night after the 2nd inning. I am pleased with that. Renfroe nailed it in his comments, saying that Richards has to get out of his own head. Maybe the limited success he saw last night will spark some confidence and a different mindset in him.
  8. Don't get me wrong. I don't think that pitchers have the right to act like victims in this seemingly sudden crackdown. But I also don't think it's right for MLB to have turned a blind eye on the situation for so long, then begin enforcing the rule midseason.
  9. I guess Cashman has adamantly stated that he will not fire his manager midseason. You guys are stuck with Boone.
  10. I feel for you guys as fans. I really do. I don't know why, but I do. Not that I want you to start winning. LOL I agree with you've posted. Why someone hasn't really gotten on the hitters to stop swinging for the fences every at bat is beyond me.
  11. I like having Marwin's defense and versatility on the team. As far as the team defense goes, I don't think it's quite as bad the 'errors' make it look. They look pretty bad according to one metric, +/- runs at -13. However, they are ranked 14th overall in defense according to Fangraphs. Furthermore, they have a DRS of +11 and a UZR/150 of 6.1, good enough for 17th and 4th overall, respectively. The team excels in saving runs with their arms (2nd), they excel in saving runs with double plays (2nd), and are above average in saving runs with their range (9th). They fall short on error runs (23rd).
  12. Regarding Devers, my opinion is to leave the kid alone and let him do his thing. I can't remember who tweeted about him being like a puppy, but that tweet was spot on. Bloom has done an amazing job so far, IMO. That said, the single biggest factor this year has been the return of Cora.
  13. Part of the problem is that this has been going on in a widespread fashion for years. MLB more or less ignored it, except for a few blatant cases. If there is a long-standing rule that pitchers are not allowed to use foreign substances, why is it just now being enforced? No, the pitchers should not be doing it in the first place. But MLB should also have not allowed it to happen for so long, then suddenly do an about face on enforcing the rule.
  14. Confirmation bias on my part, but look at what the Sox did in the first inning last night when Kike hit the first pitch for a HR. We'll never have a way of knowing, but that might have been a totally different inning and a totally different game if Cole easily retired the 1st batter.
  15. Ditto. I love having his power at the bottom of the lineup. As Nick said, he is tolerable (more than tolerable) as a #9 hitter.
  16. The Sox have the 2nd best record in the AL behind only the Astros (who are crazy good right now), and they are on pace to win 97 or 98 games. If I'm being honest, they have been a tad bit on the fortunate side of this crazy thing called randomness. Even with that being the case, the team is really good. They have avoided long losing streaks and have been pretty darn fun to watch this season. The Sox have some weaknesses, but so do all the other teams in the AL. There is no reason not to expect the Sox to remain in the pennant race for the remainder of the season. Especially if Eovaldi and ERod continue to get the results they deserve, and we get a healthy Sale back.
  17. Arroyo is a better fit for that spot than Kike or Santana are.
  18. If Verdugo is really against batting leadoff, I would not put him in that spot. He did really well in the leadoff spot last year, so I'm wondering if it's something he's adamantly opposed to, or if it's just a preference. Verdugo seems like the type of player that would be willing to bat wherever he thinks he could help the team the most. Even if not Verdugo, there are other options for leadoff that are better than Kike or Santana.
  19. If I were a Yankee fan, I wouldn't be so concerned about Cole's recent results. However, I would be deeply concerned about the remaining years of his contract, which take him into his late 30s. That said, it was kind of fun watching Cole flummox around on the mound last night.
  20. IMO, MLB is handling this situation very poorly. It's just not a good look to see the umpires checking pitchers as they walk off the field.
  21. As much as I'd like to agree with some that the Yankees are toast, there is far too much of the season remaining to count the Yankees out. As we've already seen many times this season, one or two weeks can make all the difference in the world. Even though the lineup is too heavily right handed, the Yankees do have a lot of talent on the team. IMO, much of this falls on Boone. He looked genuinely stressed and concerned last night. It will be interesting to see how management responds.
  22. My big thing is getting more production out of the lead off spot. In that regard, I think the line up change would be fairly significant. That would entail having Renfroe in the top 5.
  23. Without going through all of the box scores, I don't know how to filter 1st inning runs scored when the leadoff hitter reaches base versus when he doesn't. However, in general, the chances of scoring runs and the number of runs scored in an inning are significantly greater when the 1st batter of the inning reaches base. The importance of retiring the 1st batter of the inning, which should be common sense, cannot be overstated.
  24. I am a Dalbec fan and am one who hopes he does not get sent down this season. IMO, he's fine hitting in the 8 or 9 hole. The biggest problem with our lineup is the black hole that we've had in the leadoff spot. Fix that and Dalbec's struggles don't look as bad.
