    With most teams, I imagine. If we could give him away it would be a miracle and one we should all pray for.

    As I posted in another thread I don't think there's much chance at all we sign two of the top free agent starters. It'll be one, and likely a trade for another, younger arm. We still need RH power and bull pen help. We'll spend, but we aren't going to go mental.

    I don't see many top players looking to go to the Jays unless they blow someone out of the water. They're in a tough spot right now - poor farm and big questions over their line up for the next few seasons.

    Snell would have been an exciting get, but not too worried about him coming off the board. I'm not sure we would have gone (or should have) near that contract offer. Hopefully Soto decides soon so we can know which way we're aiming as an org. I think the reports of us looking to sign two starters are wide of the mark. We'll get only one, regardless, I'm pretty sure. A second through trade.

    Rosenthal speculating last night that Red Sox could move Casas for someone like Bryan Woo from Seattle. I don't for a second think Seattle take that deal, but if they were interested, I'd do it yesterday.

    We've been linked with Adames enough for me to think it's actually him that we're looking at and sliding him over if it comes to it. Not sure how I feel about that.

    If it does come to pass, I'm going to be very interested to see how other teams value Casas. He seems to be just about holding onto his value at the moment, but I imagine his market might be smaller than we'd hope. Especially if the hope is starting pitching in return.

    Agreed. Not sure how Devers will feel about it after his agent saying he is a 3rd baseman earlier in the off season, but hopefully we'll find out. Not breaking new ground here, but his bat is going to need to keep playing to a high level for this not to look like a bad contract.

    Trade him for pitching. I really hope the rumour about moving Devers is true. He;s a horrible 3rd baseman.

    He got a lot wrong, a lot, but he's in part, left behind a hell of a farm so we can be thankful for that at least. Those two trade deadlines though... dear me!

    I think they're genuinely interested. I also think that they will go on in a fair bit lower than everyone else, but that it won't be just for show. They'll be leaning on - - This will be your team - Dominican history/connection - Slightly lower taxes. - We're a young talented team with lots coming through. We''re going to contend for many years to come. I doubt it works with Cohen at the table, but I do think it's legit.

    This has very much like a 'Red Sox are known to be aggressive this year, let's get their names linked with our boy' feel to it.

    No. Pitchers can (and do) break down at any moment. You get the chance for a difference maker like Soto on the team you take it. Guy plays every day. That said, I can definitely see the argument for 2 aces over Soto.

    I was fairly confident from early on Pivetta would decline, but started getting quite nervous about it late afternoon yesterday. Credit to Bres for reading that market correctly. There was a fair amount of surprise, and even horror at the QO. Like their Draft 5 moves, too. I keep allowing myself to (stupidly) dream of Soto on this team, but in the likely event he isn't, this off season feels very exciting. Narrator: But this, in fact, was as exciting as it got, and once more the evil Red Sox owner chuckled his way through Christmas, another hoodwinking pulled off.

    That tax difference isn't nothing. But I just cannot see us outbidding Cohen even with that in our favour.

    If we add Soto (I agree - can't see the Mets being out bid), then we will deal from that outfield surplus and from the farm for pitching. You don't make this sort of move and then just sit there with a lopsided squad of players, deciding not to go for it.

    2, 3, and 5 feel right. I've been banging the Pivetta rejection drum since last week - every noise coming out from your Passan's et al is that there is a lot of interest in him. Weird to me, but there you go. Masa isn't likely tradable now, but how I wish we could move on from his contract. While I think the chance of one of the big 4 getting trade is unlikely, I wouldn't be shocked to see Mayer go.

    I think they're likely very serious on Soto and would love him on the team. I'm also pretty sure they're getting out bid by at least the two NY teams. Things do feel different this off season whatever the outcome of this.

    I'd happily give him away for nothing to get that contract off the books, but nobody is paying that money for him. Eat half his contract and bite the bullet (when healthy).

    Yup. I've been feeling this way for a while. I'd say it's maybe even moved to likely he will decline which is a great bet by Breslow if it comes off.

    Feels very much that way. Teoscar seems very much to be the power righty they want. If only we'd had a chance to get that guy in last year...

    Same. If you can sign him to an extension as is being rumoured too - I think it's almost a no brainer.

    I'll play with the payroll tool when I have some more time, but going off my optimistic take that Pivetta turns down the QO I think we - Sign one of the big starters, trade for Crochet (and extend him), add Tesocar and some bullpen help. I also think we will find a way to trade Yoshida while eating half his salary (when he's healed) and add Jansen as back up catcher. While in fantasy land here, I'm also of the mind they won't be against going over the LT (slightly) this year with Yoshida's half and Giolito's money off the books next year. They certainly won't want to, but I don't think it they'll be as strict looking at the potential of this team with the above moves and with the young cost-controlled talent we will have on the team. Christ that Yoshida contract was bad.

    I'm becoming more and more convinced that Pivetta is going to reject it. Apparently his market is pretty robust. There are even rumours doing the rounds of 3 at $55-60m. Seems madness to me, but durability and strike throwers doesn't come cheap these days, even with that ERA. If Breslow has called it right it opens up Tesocar without getting penalised.
