    I'm sad to lose Dobbins, I had a real soft spot for that kid, but I really like getting Contreras. You won't find a Cards fan that has anything but good words about him. Leadership, good player both offensively and defensively. Works nicely for me. Somewhat surprised Dobbins wasn't enough on his own, but it's not like we didn't have pitching to spare. You'd think we need to go out and get Bregman, Bo, or Marte now and we're in good shape with veteran leadership as well as youthful energy. But the first two would put us over the 2nd line, so is unlikely unless we can free up money somehow. And I would think we're not sending Tolle or Early anywhere now, so Marte feels unlikely too. Not sure what this means for Casas...starting in AAA is my bet. I really wonder what happens with Duran/Abreu, too Overall, very happy with this move, but a lot of questions remain.

    Last year was a shocker but his career level wasn't much higher. But then, Ohtani also had a similar numbers on fastballs.

    His power is enticing alright. His contact skills on anything above 93mph...not so much.

    Regardless, the money is there to spend on a second bat if they want to. Whether they want to is another thing.

    Forget Cots - every journo is reporting it at this number ($14.7m). So either they're all right, or you are. We'll soon find out for sure one way or another I guess.

    Well that's a different discussion. Whether they actually will spend all the way up to the 2nd line is definitely up for debate. Hell, if Campbell had proved he could even hit at league average last year, there's a world in which they'd already called it a lid for this off season. 🫣

    Yes I believe they're only putting beer costs up by $4 this season.

    Suarez? He's got deferrals in his contract so the LT hit is only $14.7m. According to Rosenthal at least.

    Not according to these - 2026 Boston Red Sox 2026 Luxury Tax Payroll Down boy, I never said it wasn't a fair question to ask ha! But even if your figure is right, we have players we will be trading out, and even before that we'd have $23m to spend. Do you really think there's no power to be had in FA or trade within those parameters?

    Let's not go into multi question marks territory Hugh!!!!!!! We are currently stated as having $26,376,949 free space before level 1. So around $46m until the end of level 2. Marte costs $14.7m. We have plenty of room. And we still have people to trade away, like Duran and pitchers.

    A sidebar - as I mentioned in the other thread: nobody should be getting excited that money is going to the Sox. They're trying to buy a second soccer team in Europe.

    I'm concerned we're going to go for Murakami, I know that much.

    I see a lot of excitement around FSG selling the Penguins, that they'll have a lot of money to plow into the Sox now. I'd hold back on that excitement. It's well known in soccer circles that they're trying to buy a second European team to build into multi club ownership that all the big beasts in European football are doing.

    Marte is still my no1 choice in a vacuum, but all depends on what we have to give up. Which sounds hefty right now.
