    Every time I see Brasier I die a little. Sale was throwing BB's, didn't expect that velocity on his fastball. So short term loss but perhaps a long term win last night.

    Or Boggy and possibly Devers. It make no sense to trade what it would take to obtain and then sign Soto. But I swear if they let Devers walk over money I will be royally pissed.

    I laughed last night as I saw Story hit the big double and getting interviewed on ESPN after the game as the hero, remembering my earlier post. But it remains true, he found himself up with the bases loaded and no outs. He has found himself up with runners in scoring position constantly throughout the season, he has had more chances to make a big impact than any player I can remember. His defense has been excellent, he is a great base runner. I want to love this guy, really I do. But damned he just needs to hit far more consistently for me before I get on board.

    I'm not optimistic about Sale's first start. Seems his fastball has lost a few feet and he had control issues in his rehab outings. I'm also growing tired of Story. His RBI totals are a function of hitting with runners in scoring position so often all season. And he has failed far far more often than he delivered, with the exception of his Joe Hardy week and a half that seems like a year ago.

    We all remember the lineups they trotted out this time last season. By the playoffs that lineup was completely different. I expect the same thing to happen this year, I don't expect to see this many holes by September.

    One thing I have always been proud of with this team is how they come through with big 2 out hits to produce runs. They've been doing it for years.

    One of my first thoughts this morning, as I relieved what has happened the last 2 games, was the idea of putting Schreiber in as the closer. But again if you take him out of his current role they may not have a lead to protect in the 9th.

    Cora has done some strange moves but most seem to work out. But last night his decision to put in 2 of the worst bullpen arms to close out a 1 run lead in the 9th against a divisional opponent was mind boggling. I understand Houck was not there but there were better options. I'd like to see Strahm utilized more.

    i don't need advanced stats such as WAR which takes into account the other players' performances. I can see it for myself, JBJ is simply not making enough defensive plays to justify his horrible plate appearances. He never did IMO.

    But a SS has many more chances to make a difference in a game than a right fielder. And Smith's career average is .273, he was never an offensive liability the way JBJ is with a career average of 229. I agree JBJ gets a great jump, so we may never really know the answer to a question that has to be asked: Just how many balls does JBJ get to in a week that the average ML outfielder (most are pretty damned good) do not? Is he really making more plays to offset all the additional empty at bats? We saw Duran got 17 hits in only 9 games, he isn't striking out and even many of his outs were hit well. In those 9 games (well it was actually 7 as he didn't play in 2 of them) JBJ got 3 hits, I didn't even bother to look up how many strikeouts but we know it's high. Did Duran really not get to enough balls that JBJ would have tracked down in those games to offset all those additional hits? Not in my book.

    JBJ's grand slam in the ALCS was my favorite moment of that title run. I have replayed that dozens of times. But for the life of me I never understood how his defense made up for his lack of offense. Now it's painfully obvious that his defense is certainly not making up for his constant bad at bats, that is a giant hole in the bottom of the lineup and I'm tired of it. Duran has been exceptional, he is everything we wanted out of him and more. It would be crazy not to keep him on the active roster and play him in front of JBJ when Kiki returns IMO.

    Yeah when I heard on the telecast that they were 2nd in the AL in runs a few days ago I was shocked, just goes to show you what a few 16 run games this early can do to the numbers.

    Well I hope this explains it. He was clearly determined to throw mostly all fastballs, he shook off the sign several times before throwing a fastball.

    Winckowski's game plan was apparently to throw 93-95 MPH fastballs with no movement on nearly every pitch, many catching a large part of the plate. Shocker they teed off on him. Does he even have other pitches? That was incredibly unimpressive.

    As I firmly believe other than the closer, which has been problematic all year, the rest of the pen did a pretty good job of protecting 1 run leads the lack of offense resulted in. They seemed to be asked to do it nearly every night and again other than the closer they held their own for much of the season. Well all that has changed recently. I'm glad I didn't get to watch last night, it was on Apple TV and that pissed me off. But I was listening when I could and knew what had happened.

    I'm not impressed that his numbers are considerably better than last year as last year he was a disaster. So he is making contact at a rate we wish JBJ would make contact, yet he does not have JBJ's defense and never will. Call me pessimistic.

    I'll need more than a grand slam to be convinced that Frenchy will be a contributor. I will always have a soft spot for Vaz as he tends to come up with big hits late in games. He did it again the other night with a base hit to right. I still say he was safe at home, the catcher obviously reached with his bare hand and put the ball in his glove. I'm not convinced he didn't beat the throw, looked to be a tie to me.

    What a crazy weekend, this just reinforces that in sports you never really know what will happen which is why sports is so great. Whitlock gets hammered and Matt Barnes gets the save. I'll still never understand why Cora did this but like most of his moves it worked. Next Frenchy hits a game winning grand slam, I just laughed as nobody saw that coming.

    I have been arguing throughout his Red Sox career that he just never made enough defensive plays that other ML outfielders don't make to offset his terrible at bats. I recall getting push back on that opinion at the time. But this was not JBJ for Renfroe. there were prospects involved.

    So I watched my team trade Mookie Betts over money, the return was Verdugo and 2 minor leaguers who will never be factors. Now I understand the key to that trade was unloading the Price contract but still it is what it is, a trade of one of the top 2 players in baseball in his prime for Vergudo, Wong and Downs to save money. I am hearing they will probably trade Xander and his replacement appears to be Trevor Story. Now there is a real question about the interest in signing Devers, the most dynamic hitter they have developed through their system in a long time. As a lifelong Red Sox fan I'm not used to this.

    Is it just me or do they take far too many first strikes? I swear Verdugo takes one right down the middle, fouls of the 2nd and at 0-2 three times a night.
