  1. There is also the illusion of the 'hop', which apparently is due to the eye/brain switching from distant to close focus. Dunno. But I know I've read that somewhere. UI remember as a kid, one of the few RS games I got to go to, i had the illusion that outfielder throws rose--again, because of the speed? (The guy I remember focussing on was Carroll Hardy!, who apparently was much better at football than baseball, leading to some mean-spirited razzing: "T'row 'im a football; mebbe he can hit THAT."
  2. Well, one of them was Jim Rice, but in fairness, he seemed to realize that the only issue was that it cost the batter an RBI/
  3. Twice announcers criticize TB runner for not scoring from 3rd in the 9th. WHY? His run meant nothing; the two potential runners behind him are the ones that count. So he stayed right where he should have.
  4. Didn't see the double steal. Why didn't they just tag Devers out with 2 outs?
  5. Or Rafy or Abreu or Wong or Bello or hell, trade the whole team, or better yet, sell it. Whatever you do, don't keep players who are productive and who fans want to see. That is SO last year!
  6. I believe it is a safe rule that any post that begins "If you recall, I was the one who ..." or "Where are all of you who in 20xx said ..." or any of many variants, can be quickly answered "Strange as it may sound, I am much less well-versed in our literary histories on sports boards than you may think."
  7. I've never seen a 6-5-3 DP, at least, I'm not aware that I have.
  8. Yeah that Devers guy sucks.
  9. You clearly know nothing about advanced stats! What about d.rc.tkWAR+???
  10. You would prefer he strike out in those situations? While hitting 162 HR a year?
  11. Salaries are never ridiculous if there are employers willing to pay them. And if the owners were losing money, they would SURELY open the books to prove it, something they are not willing to do.
  12. Why is the stadium empty? when the self-laudatory Cardinal fans constantly claim they are the best in the league?
  13. I think Refsnyder has made up for his hit.
  14. Did Koji throw anything other than that unhittable splitter?
  15. The medical studies I've read that have dealt with this issue have not provided any conclusive evidence on this question. (i.e, you see conclusions like "may increase chance of tendon damage", which is essentially meaningless, or even your own statement 'many tissues'). With inconclusive evidence, there is apparently a lot of room for spin. But the temptation for a teenager looking forward to a likely very short prof. career that could earn millions has to be pretty strong. Curious whether any posters here have gone that route-- just answer 'I have a friend who ...' Personally, I have a friend who was too old, too small, and his natural athletic ability insufficient ever to consider them.
  16. Why is this happening? The whole limitation on mound visits was intended to speed the game up. Make a judgment and move on.
  17. For the inane comment file: Rays announcer after Duran doubles off the wall, then scores on two consecutive 380-400 ft fly balls: "Red Sox playing small ball ..."
  18. Yup. I see no reason to doubt it. Losing 5 pounds in as little as a day is not difficult. (It's no fun, but most of that weight is water). Although I also agree with 700 above that 14 pounds might well put you on the verge of hospitalization.
  19. Why is that the case? When I go to a minor league game (AA), nearly every pitcher can throw in the 90s. I thought the problem with young players was hitting the curve/slider.
  20. Good point. And you're right: I've never understood the vilification of players who are not great, but very good and who perform EXACTLY as they could be expected to perform. JD was certainly one of those. Two others that come to mind are Adrian Gonzalez who was very consistent and hit pretty much as he hit throughout his career, and J.D. Drew (not as good as Gonzalez, but hit just as he had elsewhere). There was nothing particularly unlikable about any of these guys (although they were pretty low-key, as I recall, and not rah-rah self-proclaimed tough guys, like, say, Yucker). (I would be inclined to put Hanley II in the same category, who at that point in his career pretty much gave what could have been expected.).
  21. My bad, didn't read it correctly (I was in LA during the 'Ohtani is clearly guilty and should be banned forever' hysteria, and no longer trust what any sports fan says about Japanese players.) Sorry. Again, my bad.
  22. Fair enough. You're not pissed at Yoshida's performance, right? You're p.o.d at the money he's being paid.
  23. You mean 30 million back in the day when you could buy something with that? (I hate the prices of hot dogs at Fenway! They've gone WAY up. Why back when I was a kid, they were a dime! What's wrong with the world?)
  24. And after praising Raffaela's 'catch', I was on my way to posting about how TYler O'Neill has started to come back to earth ...
