Given your deep reading of medieval philosophers, you want to give me the actual reference for that? Or at least explain to me in all those examples which is cheating and which is not, since you claim the difference is clear cut? You might also detail for me the sports you have been involved in where no 'cheating' (under any definition) took place, bec. I don't know of one. -

Balderdash! There is no absolute difference between 'cheating/non-cheating'. How is spending 5x as much as competing teams 'fair'? Isn't that cheating? (not in baseball, but it is not allowed in NFL or NBA). What about holding in football? (illegal! happens every play. Is surreptitiously holding an example of cheating?) How about tennis? yelling is illegal, grunting is ok? Using a timeout to ice a kicker--gamesmanship? or cheating? Did you ever hear Michael Jordan talk about the illegal hand-checks he used to use on driving opponents to throw their shot off? (SHould he be banned?) Flopping on 3-pt. shots? Goalie interference in hockey? Quick-pitching in baseball or quick-serving in tennis? Throwing inside in baseball? How about at a batter's chin? Paying a player in the NCAA or giving athletes benefits not available to other students? (this happens every day). How about admitting athletes with few to no academic skills to college in the first place? ... -

Of course. That''s what Woods claims to have done at LA. Were other pitchers too stupid, proud, or naive to do the same? Just out of curiosity: show of hands. Who of you who has played sports: (1) has NEVER cheated. (2) has NEVER played opponents who cheat.

Exactly. What amazes me is the feigned shock of players, fans, and writers. In sports, players cheat. They do. And anyone who has played sports on any level has experienced this, whether it's football, baseball, golf, tennis, cards, or tiddly-winks. What you learn to do is to neutralize it in some way. Are baseball players helpless, morally-pure infants? The last thing a boxing referee says before the fight is "Protect yourself at all times." Enough of this sanctimonious hand-wringing.

Karras and Hornung. Much later. (late 50s? early 60s? Durocher's suspension was before my time--40s?) As I recall, they were only suspended for a year.

Oh for God's sake stop. Cora has the respect of his players, is extremely well-spoken, has done a lot for the game and for social causes as well. Pete Rose is a cheap-shot artist who deliberately tried to injure other players, a pathological liar who cannot even form a coherent sentence. (That said, put the scum-bag in the Hall of Fame--one thing he could do was hit a baseball.)

Well maybe. Except this implies that other teams care and think as much about the RS as people in Boston. they don't. They could give a rat's ass whether RS want to get under the cap. All they care about are their own interests.

Alas, the guy who fits that description is Cora. MLB can chest-pump itself for being bad-ass moralists, but they need to find a way to keep AC around.

Shocked that I agree almost completely with this. MLB would have done well to work to keep guys like Hinch and Cora around.

Yes, but I think once the extent of this is known (well, it's known; it's just not admitted), the scapegoating may stop. If I were an owner, I'd hire guys like Hinch and Cora the instant I could.

Let's not get carried away; there has ALWAYS been a place for 'cheating' of all sorts in baseball. Check the ESPN article "The History of Sign Stealing in Baseball." Some of the most famous series involved it (Bobby Thompson's HR, for one). It is also amusing that the RS won their last WS by beating NY, Astros, and the Dodgers (all who have now been named as involved in similar schemes). Cora is taking the fall for all of this.

I'm in LA now, and one of the more amusing aspects of this is listening to Dodgers fans and announcers wringing their hands in moral outrage at this. "Oh woe! Demand the WS trophe! Ban the Astros from post-season! Sue MLB! Give us our deserved title!" (LA is now one of the teams implicated by Morrison).

Anyone but Varitek. I'm sick of seeing replays of him, in full armor, cheap-shotting a guy pissed that he got thrown at. And tired too of having that Pete Rose-esque cheap-shot praised by fans as an example of toughness.

Thanks. That sounds right. I'm sure he knew what was going on, but must have taken the position 'This is something players and coaches do, not something the manager puts in place.'

I haven't been following this discussion, but has anyone explained why Cora would have put an inferior system into place, when he had been part of the all-encompassing one at Houston? (Was it bec. he refused to share the details of that system? i.e., would not rat out the Astros? or did he just feel what they were doing was a bit much? Or did he think that ethically (!) the point was to encourage the players themselves to develop a system of their own?) Sorry if this was answered above.

Actually, all I care about managers is their droning pre-game interviews on the radio. Loved the droll lilt of Francona and Cora--sort of like baseball Musak while I'm cooking dinner. I'll miss them.

I would also do that, as well as giving credit for answers I mistakenly marked wrong. But then, of course, I would lie to them and say that the points (one way or the other) did not affect the letter grade I had assigned.

They're both on my block/ignore list. The board is much more enjoyable as a result.

I wouldn't put too much faith in anything a sports owner says. Isn't he trying to sell season tickets right now? Whatever his plans, why would he come out and say that essentially, he's tanking 2020?

When I saw him in AA, he seemed worlds apart from anyone else (similar to what you see at a AA or even AAA game and someone, say, from the bigs is down there to rehab). But, knowing nothing of him, what set him apart from others, at least to me, was his defense. I assumed that was his strength.
